Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland
Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland
Articles & Book Chapters
The application of criminal law to consensual sex is an arena of conflict and contest between conservative and liberal forces in the United States, with occasional feminist interventions. The same arguments tend to recur on each side of the debate. Conservatives assert the appropriateness and necessity of enforcing a particular Judeo-Christian sexual morality through law. Liberals argue for tolerance of private consensual sexual conduct. When the debate shifts from the private to the public arena, conservatives may argue privacy principles, asserting the right of bystanders to be let alone, whereas liberals may shift to freedom of expression arguments. In this …

An Assessment Of Decisional Balance, Self Efficacy, And Condom Stages Of Change Among White And Minority Women, Shirley Amanda Gazabon
Open Access Master's Theses
Between 1992 and 1999, the number of persons living with AIDS increased in all groups of women in the United States. In terms of ethnicity, the number of African American and Hispanic American infected with HIV has increased tremendously. In order to address the HIV pandemic among ethnic women in the United States, systematic methods for studying condom use and HIV prevention are being developed and validated.
The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) has been postulated as an integrative and comprehensive model of intentional behavior change that incorporates process oriented variables in an effort to predict how and when people adopt healthy …
Understanding The Efficacy Of Residential Treatment For Female And Alaskan Native Adolescents: Outcome Study And Meta-Analysis, Kathleen Cady-Webster
Understanding The Efficacy Of Residential Treatment For Female And Alaskan Native Adolescents: Outcome Study And Meta-Analysis, Kathleen Cady-Webster
Open Access Master's Theses
Today adolescent violent crime and juvenile delinquency is an increasing problem in our society. Along with the high number of minority offenders, there is also evidence from state and local agencies that the number of female offenders is also increasing. Once youth enter the family court system, they are often adjudicated for treatment into a residential facility. There is little information available regarding the efficacy of these types of placement especially for female and minority problem youths. Phase I of this project involved the examination of such a facility utilizing a longitudinal study spanning four years of data collection. Year …
Relationship Of Maternal Age To Risk Factors And Infant Outcomes For Children Of Young Mothers, Candace A. Reynolds
Relationship Of Maternal Age To Risk Factors And Infant Outcomes For Children Of Young Mothers, Candace A. Reynolds
Open Access Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to broaden the field of research on the developmental risks associated with the infants of young mothers by identifying age-related differences within this group of mothers and their associated influences on children's outcomes. A sample of young mothers was developmentally separated into three maternal age groups: 13-15, 16-18, and 19-21. Data on the family's available resources, maternal utilization of social support, the environment of the home, and the infant's developmental progress at six months were combined to examine their relationship to maternal age. In addition, further analysis was completed to identify differences surrounding these …

Developing Western Cranston's Proposed Village Center And Public Consensus Through A Visual Preference Survey, Thomas J. Kravitz
Open Access Master's Theses
The goal of this research project sought to evaluate resident's opinions concerning a variety of different developments, with each development representing specific elements of a proposed village center development in Western Cranston. The project utilized a technique developed by Anton Nelessen called Visual Preference Survey. VPS is a tool planners may use to present a vision of a plan to the public. It's meant to be used in the very preliminary stages of the public planning process, because this is when public participation is most important. In the context of this report, the idea is to garner public support by …

The Potential Role Of Rhode Island's Housing Authorities In Furthering Community Integration For People With Developmental Disabilities, Renee M. Saedlo
Open Access Master's Theses
This study discusses and examines the housing issues for people with developmental disabilities in Rhode Island. The current philosophy of housing for people with developmental disabilities focuses on the promotion of personal choice and the integration of this population into the community rather than living in an institutional setting. Due to the reliance of this population on supportive housing programs, housing authorities play a major role in successful integration. Currently, there is no information oriented toward housing authorities that explains their potential role in furthering the goals of community integration for people with developmental disabilities. To promote the active participation …

The Watershed Trail: Melville To The Glen, A Greenway Master Plan For The Town Of Portsmouth, Deidra J. Storti
Open Access Master's Theses
The Greenway Master Plan is a guide for developing a multi-user trail in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This report provides a comprehensive approach to implementing a trail from Melville to The Glen, called The Watershed Trail. While it focuses on integrating important aspects of the natural and human environment for one segment of trail, the report could be used to direct the community in developing an island-wide system of various types of publicly accessible trails. The goal of developing the trail is multi-purposed. First, islanders have expressed a desire to develop off-road pathways that link their homes, shopping, …

Physicochemical Characteristics And Macroinvertebrate Assemblages Of Riffles Upstream And Downstream Of A Streambank Impacted By Unrestricted Cattle Access, Ronald L. Johnson, Daniel D. Ward, Richard S. Grippo
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Riparian zones are important contributors to stream ecosystem health. Alteration of such areas can change stream structure and function, resulting in modified productivity and hydrologic patterns. We studied two riffle sites on the South Fork of the Spring River in Fulton County, AR upstream and downstream of a streambank ostensibly degraded by unrestricted cattle access. The two sites were measured for differences in physical habitat (including bank width, stream velocity, depth, substrate composition, and embeddedness), chemical characteristics (including dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity and total suspended solids) and biological characteristics (including benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, similarity, and standing crop). Measurements …
Optical Transmittance Of A Rice Leaf Via Ray Tracing, Stephen Nicoletti, Alois (Al) J. Adams
Optical Transmittance Of A Rice Leaf Via Ray Tracing, Stephen Nicoletti, Alois (Al) J. Adams
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Optical reflectance from a plant leaf increases in response to stress and disease. Previous studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock found that, while the reflectance from a rice leaf increased with increased salinity, reflectance changes could not be used to differentiate one stress or disease from another. The objective of this study is to characterize the angular distribution of optical transmittance for a healthy rice leaf using a ray tracing technique and assuming a three-media optical model. The ultimate goal is to relate this distribution to specific plant pathologies. Three rays are traced through the cross section …

The kynurenine pathway catabolite 3-hydroxykynurenine (3HK) and redox-active metals such as copper and iron are implicated in cataractogenesis. Here we investigate the reaction of kynurenine pathway catabolites with copper and iron, as well as interactions with the major lenticular structural proteins, the R-crystallins. The o-aminophenol kynurenine catabolites 3HK and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA) reduced Cu(II)>Fe(III) to Cu(I) and Fe(II), respectively, whereas quinolinic acid and the nonphenolic kynurenine catabolites kynurenine and anthranilic acid did not reduce either metal. Both 3HK and 3HAA generated superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in a copper-dependent manner. In addition, 3HK and 3HAA fostered copper-dependent R-crystallin cross-linking. 3HK- …

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …
