Hysteria about the press, like the flu, breaks out periodically, and when it does, few of us are better off for having lived through the experience. We are currently on what I sincerely hope will prove to be the receding edge of the latest epidemic ofpublic outrage about the press, and, as usual, the frenzied state has not brought out the best in either the media or its critics.

Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson
Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article defends the importance of studying communication. Academic disciplines in higher education are routinely called upon to explain and justify their role in the educational enterprise. Some academic fields such as history and philosophy are more central in the pursuits of liberal arts, while others such as business administration and engineering are more related to career development. The discipline of communication is fairly unique as it crosses these boundaries. As a result, a need exists to provide a rationale for the study of communication. The National Communication Association, in response to requests from communication departments and administrators for evidence …

What College Students Should Know And Be Able To Do, Rebecca B. Rubin, Sherwyn P. Morreale
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article discusses the issue of college students' communications skill and knowledge. The end of the 20th century provides educators and administrators with an opportunity to reflect on how well they have accomplished their goals. The communication discipline, since its beginning, has been concerned with skill achievement and knowledge generation. But not until the latter part of the century have scholars and national associations attempted to identify and agree upon what it is that students should know and be able to do. These efforts reflect maturity of the discipline and generation of a body of knowledge that allows such conclusions …
Employment Trends In Communication Arts And Sciences, Michael E. Smilowitz, Philip Emmert
Employment Trends In Communication Arts And Sciences, Michael E. Smilowitz, Philip Emmert
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article looks at the career opportunities for communication arts and sciences graduates in the U.S. As graduate students planning academic careers seek counsel for their programs of study, there is a need for good answers regarding career opportunities. Departments planning curricula and seeking to fill position vacancies likewise require reliable information regarding the directions in which their disciplines are moving. The analysis for curricula development, program growth, and career choices requires more than anecdotal evidence. Incidental conversations at conventions and the occasional reviews of the "state of the art" are helpful, but not adequate for considering concerns as important …

This article also offer two areas of preparation for professors and graduate teaching assistants who have a small number of ESL students enrolled in regular sections of public speaking courses. In addition, this article provides an overview of the campus setting, areas of preparation recommended by B. L. Quigley and colleagues, application of the recommended assessment and instructional strategies, perceptions of the ESL study participants regarding the …
The Scholarship Of Application: The Interaction Of Theory And Practice, Rozell R. Duncan, Mary Anne Higgins
The Scholarship Of Application: The Interaction Of Theory And Practice, Rozell R. Duncan, Mary Anne Higgins
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article explores the implication of integrating theory and practice to application of scholarship among educators. The application of knowledge, commonly termed service, is the third chord of the scholarly triad. Service is transforming what we know as a discipline into functionally tools that can affect and resolve societal problems. Application stretches beyond committee work and community projects, it integrates theory and practice. The practical application of theory enables scholars to respond positively to the needs of the community in which they live.

Protection Of Intellectual Property Rights And The Impact Of Trips, Sowmiya R.K. Sikal
LLM Theses and Essays
This thesis focuses on the importance of intellectual property rights and its protection in the international arena. Coming from a developing country - India, I have always been fascinated with the area of international intellectual property rights protection because of its severe ramification on the economy and the social structure of developing countries. The impact of heightened protection of intellectual property rights has been a controversial issue between developed and developing countries for many years. In this paper, I have examined intellectual property rights, need for its protection, conventions, treaties and agreements present for the protection of intellectual property including …
Public Policy Defense In International Commercial Arbitration, Mingqiang Qian
Public Policy Defense In International Commercial Arbitration, Mingqiang Qian
LLM Theses and Essays
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how public policy defense functions in international commercial arbitration and whether it will block the development of international commercial arbitration. Chapter II deals with the role of public policy in international private law. This chapter examines the origins of public policy in common law countries and its functions in international private law. It is difficult to evaluate public policy as a precise concept because of its relative nature. Nevertheless, to limit its application in international private law, legal scholars have tried to clarify differences between domestic public policy, international public policy, and …

Remifentanil (4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1-oxopropyl)phyenylamino]-1- piperidinepropionic acid methyl ester) is a μ-opioid receptor agonist with considerable abuse potential in racing horses. The identification of its major equine urinary metabolite, 4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1- oxopropyl)phenylamino]-1-piperidinepropionic acid, an ester hydrolysis product of remifentanil is reported. Administration of remifentanil HCl (5 mg, intravenous) produced clear-cut locomotor responses, establishing the clinical efficacy of this dose. ELISA analysis of postadministration urine samples readily detected fentanyl equivalents in these samples. Mass spectrometric analysis, using solid-phase extraction and trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatization, showed the urine samples contained parent remifentanil in low concentrations, peaking at 1 h. More significantly, a major peak was identified as …

Electroporation Dynamics In Biological Cells Subjected To Ultrafast Electrical Pulses: A Numerical Simulation Study, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach
Bioelectrics Publications
A model analysis of electroporation dynamics in biological cells has been carried out based on the Smoluchowski equation. Results of the cellular response to short, electric pulses are presented, taking account of the growth and resealing dynamics of transient aqueous pores. It is shown that the application of large voltages alone may not be sufficient to cause irreversible breakdown, if the time duration is too short. Failure to cause irreversible damage at small pulse widths could be attributed to the time inadequacy for pores to grow and expand beyond a critical threshold radius. In agreement with earlier studies, it is …

A Gathering Place: Russian Week At The Stockholm Sweden Temple, John C. Thomas
A Gathering Place: Russian Week At The Stockholm Sweden Temple, John C. Thomas
BYU Studies
Temples are the great gathering places of Mormonism. As such, they cater in varying degrees to the diversity of an increasingly global Church membership. From its inception, the Stockholm Sweden Temple was designed to transcend the linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic differences that might otherwise undermine the temple's higher purposes. Dedicated in 1985, that temple was therefore well suited to play a vital role in the early development of the Church in Russia and the Baltic states. During the 1990s, many Saints from the post-Soviet states traveled together for a week's stay at the Stockholm temple to be "endowed with power …

Wyoming, Nebraska Territory: Joseph W. Young And The Mormon Emigration Of 1864, Craig S. Smith
BYU Studies
On a mild and pleasant Monday, February 22, 1864, Joseph A. Young in company with Elders William C. Staines, John W. Young, and H. B. Clawson departed Salt Lake City by overland mail stage for the East to organize and direct the year's gathering of Saints to Zion. Joseph W. Young, also appointed to this task, had already left the city on the preceding stage. After extensive labors ensuring a successful emigration, these untiring servants did not return to their homes and families until late September when the last emigrants were outfitted and on the final leg of their journey.
The Wto: A Train Wreck In Progress?, Willam A. Lovett
The Wto: A Train Wreck In Progress?, Willam A. Lovett
Fordham International Law Journal
This article argues that the WTO entrenches an asymmetrical, non-reciprocal trading system that benefits multi-national corporations especially, at the expense of industrial workers, farmers, and a wide range of business enterprises. It argues that the WTO doesn't deserve to survive in its present, unbalanced, and unsustainable form, and that it is doubtful that its voting regime, accumulated asymmetries, and overall rigidity can be overhauled. The author posits that bilateral and regional trade bargaining will become increasingly important and that world market forces are likely to bypass, and perhaps overwhelm, the WTO.
