Studies On The Role Creb As A Mediator Of Neurotrophin-3 Actions In Oligodendrocytes, Jamie Richard Johnson Jan 2000

Studies On The Role Creb As A Mediator Of Neurotrophin-3 Actions In Oligodendrocytes, Jamie Richard Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

In the central nervous system (CNS), oligodendrocytes (OLGs) are the cells responsible for producing the myelin membrane which allows for the saltatory conduction of neuronal impulses. We have previously shown that CREB (cAMP response element binding protein), a transcription factor that belongs to a large family bZip (basic leucine zipper) proteins, could be a mediator of neuronal signals that, coupled to different signal transduction pathways, may play different regulatory roles at specific stages of oligodendrocyte development. We have found before that, in committed OLGs, CREB activation by phosphorylation can be triggered by β-adrenergic stimulation and appears to play a role …

Rethinking The Place Of The Practicum In Teacher Education., Ralph Blunden Jan 2000

Rethinking The Place Of The Practicum In Teacher Education., Ralph Blunden

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper draws on the author’s 25 years of experience in teacher education and on a number of course evaluation questionnaires administered over the last three years to students in the one-year full time Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (and its predecessors) at the University of Melbourne. It is argued that the bifurcation between practice and theory (and theory and practice), between teaching and training experience and thinking about such experience within theoretical frameworks is a division that should be sequentially organised rather than concurrent as in most initial teacher education programs. It is claimed that data from …

Unsafe Injections And The Transmission Of Hepatitis B And C In A Periurban Community In Pakistan, A J. Khan, S P. Luby, F Fikree, A Karim, S Obaid, S Dellawala, S Mirza, T Malik, S Fisher-Hoch, J B. Mccormick

Community Health Sciences

Following reports of frequent deaths associated with jaundice and chronic liver disease among adults in a periurban community of Karachi, Pakistan, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the relationship between injections and viral hepatitis infections, to identify the reasons why patients received frequent injections, and to observe the injection practices employed in clinics. Two hundred and three adult patients were interviewed as they left each of the 18 area clinics. Practitioners were interviewed and three consecutive injections were observed at each clinic. Eighty-one per cent of patients received an injection on the day of the interview. Of the 135 patients …

Editorial: Mandatory Reporting Of Child Abuse In Ireland: Some Cautionary Comments, Niall Mcelwee Jan 2000

Editorial: Mandatory Reporting Of Child Abuse In Ireland: Some Cautionary Comments, Niall Mcelwee

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The last year of the previous Millennium saw the publication of the latest government document on mandatory reporting of child abuse titled the National Guidelines for the Protection and Welfare of Children. This issue has come to dominate the minds of social care workers and child protection and welfare professionals. This editorial is an edited version of research conducted for a conference on child abuse and sexual offences held in Waterford, Ireland. Mandatory reporting has become a mantra and is now part of a highly politicised debate in this country. It seems to me that mandatory reporting should not be …

Networking: Promotion Of "Horizontal" Partnership In The Local Development Programme, Catherine Forde Jan 2000

Networking: Promotion Of "Horizontal" Partnership In The Local Development Programme, Catherine Forde

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Social partnership, or 'the search for consensus on economic and social objectives between sectoral interests' (Walsh et aI., 1998) has gained increasing importance in Irish public policy in recent years. The Programme of Integrated Development in Disadvantaged Areas 1995-1999 (P.I.D.D.A), under the Local Development Programme, is one of several initiatives to stem from the Irish commitment to social partnership. The Programme represents a locally-based response to unemployment and disadvantage. Two of its principal objectives are as follows: • To improve the capacity of local communities 'to participate fully in local development and to counter social exclusion' (Ireland, 1995, p. 60). …

Youth Work In Ireland: The Struggle For Identity, Hilary Jenkinson Jan 2000

Youth Work In Ireland: The Struggle For Identity, Hilary Jenkinson

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper discusses the struggle the youth work sector in Ireland has experienced in forming a conceptual and practicebased identity . Youth work in the Irish context is a relatively new discipline both in theoretical and practical terms and its development on the ground has been severely hindered by "the erratIc and fitful evolution of policies .. .insecure employment conditions, inadequate resources and a constant search for funding from a bewildering array of sources" (Gilligan 1991 p.89). This article outlines some central principles that are fundamental to youth work practice, and identifies practice contexts which adhere to these tenets. The …

Single Pregnant Women's Encounters In Public: Changing Norms Or Performing Roles, Abbey Hyde Jan 2000

Single Pregnant Women's Encounters In Public: Changing Norms Or Performing Roles, Abbey Hyde

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper presents data on single pregnant women's encounters in public in an Irish context. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, which were analysed using a grounded theory strategy. The study was conducted in Dublin City and 51 unmarried women whose ages ranged from 16-36 participated. Findings suggested that while dominant public discourses on non-marital childbearing within the culture were negative (albeit challenged) at the time data were being collected, responses from others whom participants interacted with in verbal face-to-face encounters in public were generally (though certainly not exclusively) experienced as positive in tone. An attempt is made to explain …

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole Jan 2000

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Acknowledging the common assumption locating the impact of education in its role to act as a mediator between origins and destinations, this paper examines Early Childhood Care and Education [ECCE], particularly the role state provided, compensatory education plays in challenging educational disadvantage. Initially operationalisation is made of the key concepts of ECCE, equality of opportunity and educational disadvantage. I then move to briefly describe the historical development of ECCE and compensatory education. Three state provided compensatory education programmes are identified: Rutland Street Project, Breaking the Cycle and Early Start. I conclude by outlining the significant impact early interventions can have …

International Student-Athlete Adjustment To College: A Preliminary Analysis, Lynn L. Ridinger, Donna L. Pastore

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

This preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine how well international student–athletes adjusted to college relative to their domestic teammates and the general student body. The results revealed that international student-athletes were significantly more well-adjusted to college than international nonathletes. International student–athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student–athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. The effects of gender and ethnicity on adjustment to college were also examined.

Transit-Oriented Development In The Inner City: A Delphi Survey, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris Jan 2000

Transit-Oriented Development In The Inner City: A Delphi Survey, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris

Journal of Public Transportation

This study presents the results of a three-round Delphi survey that focused on issues and opportunities related to transit-oriented development (TOD) in U.S. inner cities. The survey queried a panel of 25 experts about the various goals and objectives of the practice of TOD, as well as the preconditions and constraints surrounding such development in economically disadvantaged areas of the inner city. Starting from a wide range of responses, the panel was eventually able, through the Delphi process, to focus on specific issues and propose a concrete set of strategies for the implementation of TODs.

Simplicity And Complexity In Contracts, Karen Eggleston Jan 2000

Simplicity And Complexity In Contracts, Karen Eggleston

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Standard economic models of contract imply that contracts should be highly "complex," by which we mean (1) rich in the expected number of payoff-relevant contingencies; (2) variable in the magnitude of payoffs contracted to flow between parties; and (3) severe in the cognitive load necessary to understand the contract. Yet most realworld contracts are simple along all three of these dimensions. We argue that many factors, often neglected in the literature, account for this discrepancy. The factors are categorized as asymmetric information, monitoring dynamics, evolutionary pressures, conventions, reliance on trust and reputation, enforcement costs, bounded rationality, and renegotiation. This positive …

Frequency Of Consumption And Nutrient Composition Of Composite Dishes Commonly Consumed In The Uk By South Asian Muslims Originating From Bangladesh, Pakistan And East Africa (Ismailis), Tashmin Khamis, P. A. Judd, J. E. Thomas

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Introduction: This paper presents information on the nutrient composition of commonly consumed traditional dishes eaten by the three major South Asian Muslim groups residing in Britain, namely Bangladeshi, Pakistani and East African Ismaili Muslims.

Methods: Information regarding the most common dishes consumed by South Asian Muslims originating from Bangladesh, Pakistan and East Africa (Ismailis) and living in London was obtained from 7-day menu records over two seasons. For each common dish, weighed recipes were collected in triplicate and the composition (energy and selected nutrients) was calculated from the ingredients and cooked weight of the dish.

Results: The three Muslim …

The Epistemic Contract Of Bisexual Erasure, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2000

The Epistemic Contract Of Bisexual Erasure, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

In this article, Professor Kenji Yoshino seeks to explain why the category of bisexuality has been erased in contemporary American political and legal discourse. He first argues that the invisibility of bisexuality relative to homosexuality does not reflect the incidences of those orientations in the population. Defining bisexuality as the possession of more than incidental desire for both sexes, Yoshino shows that the major sexuality studies demonstrate that the incidence of bisexuality is in fact greater than or comparable to the incidence of homosexuality. Yoshino explains the erasure of bisexuality by positing that both self-identified heterosexuals and self-identified homosexuals have …
