The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam
The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam
Quidditas
Our present conception of alchemy is, at best, shadowy and confused. As Charles Nicholl states in The Chemical Theatre, "The modern image...tends in two directions: one scientific, the other magical. The first defines alchemy simply and chronologically as early chemistry...out of which modern chemistry began to emerge during the seventeenth century.” On the other hand, “alchemy is popularly defined as one of the ‘occult arts’.... To us, the alchemist’s avowed quest for miraculous substances—the Philosopher’s Stone which converts all to gold, the Elixir Vitae which confers immortality—belongs to the realm of magic rather than science.” Nevertheless, to consider Renaissance …

Tort Claims Against Gun Manufacturers For Crime-Related Injuries: Defining A Suitable Role For The Tort System In Regulating The Firearms Industry, Timothy D. Lytton
Tort Claims Against Gun Manufacturers For Crime-Related Injuries: Defining A Suitable Role For The Tort System In Regulating The Firearms Industry, Timothy D. Lytton
Missouri Law Review
Gun violence is a serious problem in the United States. For many years, in order to decrease gun violence, the sale and possession of firearms has been regulated by statute.' This Article argues that tort claims against gun manufacturers can complement legislative efforts to regulate the firearms industry and can thereby make a modest contribution to decreasing gun violence. The Article does not, however, endorse attempts to impose restrictions on the firearms industry by using tort litigation as a substitute for legislation.
Union-Negotiated Waivers Of An Employee's Federal Forum Rights To Statutory Claims: Are They An Effective Means To Exclusivity, Robert M. Smith
Union-Negotiated Waivers Of An Employee's Federal Forum Rights To Statutory Claims: Are They An Effective Means To Exclusivity, Robert M. Smith
Missouri Law Review
Virtually every collective bargaining agreement provides for the use of labor arbitration in the event that the employer, and the union representing the employee, are unable to reach a mutually agreeable result.' However, even after Wright v. Universal Maritime Service Corp.,3 it remains unclear whether an agreement to arbitrate can require arbitration to be an individual employee's exclusive forum for federal statutory claims. This Note analyzes the United States Supreme Court holding in Wright, and also analyzes both the case law leading up to the Court's decision, and the existing split among the federal circuits as to whether union-negotiated waivers …

FOCUS on Boise State
There s little argument that new and daunting challenges confront today's kids as we enter the new millennium. Facing issues such as communicating with parents, school violence and cultural barriers, it's clear that kids at the start of the 21st century have plenty to think about. In this issue, FOCUS looks at some of those issues from the vantage point of teachers, parents, school administrators, law enforcement officials - and most important, the kids themselves. 1998-1999 Monitoring Strategy, Kentucky River Basin Management Unit, L. Ormsbee, G. Epp, E. Caudill, Lee Colten
KWRRI Research Reports
During the fall of 1997 and spring of 1998 about 40 individuals and more than 30 organizations and agencies provided input into the development of a monitoring strategy for the Kentucky River basin under the Kentucky Watershed Management Framework. In addition to the agencies that were able to commit resources to the monitoring effort, citizen input was sought in the design of the strategy. Citizen monitoring efforts are also providing valuable information in many portions of the state. The intent of the coordinated planning process was to carefully consider agency resources and capabilities, taking into account where and when each …

Popular Techniques Of Buddhist Meditation As Apparatus For Mental Health Development In Thailand, Orawan Pilunowad
Popular Techniques Of Buddhist Meditation As Apparatus For Mental Health Development In Thailand, Orawan Pilunowad
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
During the Chatchai Government in the 1980's, Thailand had witnessed unprecedented growth in the country's economy. In 1997, however, the economic prosperity that the Thai had enjoyed blasted like bubbles. This economic downturn had resulted in an unemployment of over 2 million people. While most people talked about side of this economic crisis, the author saw some glimmering bright side of the downturn. This was the time, the author argued, to heal the national illness by using culturally-based therapy: Buddhist meditation. This illness was of two kinds: (1) depression and anxiety from being "losers" in the turmoil; (2) materialism and …
