Expanding The Omop Common Data Model To Support Extracorporeal Life Support Research, Clemens Rieder, Ahmed Said, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVE: Despite the increased availability of electronic health records, open-source standardized data collection to facilitate high-resolution data during extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is lacking. This project aimed to assess the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM) for interoperability to store data sufficiently generated in the context of ECLS and to develop a custom data model expansion in case the OMOP CDM proved insufficient.
DESIGN AND SETTING: The OMOP CDM was analyzed qualitatively by expert consensus for its capability to capture data relative to ECLS as well as the presence of fitting ECLS-related concepts. Database entries necessary to …

Ovarian sex steroid hormones play a critical role in regulating fertility. In addition, these hormones influence behavior and mood across the lifespan in females. Converging evidence from rodent studies and human neuroimaging shows that ovarian hormones dynamically regulate neuronal excitability, synaptic efficacy, and structural remodeling across menstrual/estrous cycles, puberty, and reproductive aging. Estrogen and progesterone reorganize network dynamics and gate plasticity eligibility rather than uniformly scaling synaptic strength, with additional contributions from glia, the extracellular matrix, and neurosteroid signaling. Here we synthesize recent cross-scale advances that link structural and functional changes to cellular and circuit mechanisms, and relate these dynamics …

Alcohol Consumption And Molecular Subtypes Of Colorectal Cancer: Pooled Observational And Mendelian Randomization Analyses, Christos V Chalitsios, Yin Cao, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, yet its association with distinct molecular subtypes remains unclear. Clarifying this could reveal insights into alcohol's carcinogenic mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between alcohol consumption and the risk of CRC subtypes defined by individual tumor markers (and marker combinations), namely microsatellite instability (MSI) status, CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) status, BRAF, and KRAS mutations.
METHODS: Pooled observational (n
RESULTS: Among drinkers, each additional 14 g/d of alcohol was associated with a 10% higher CRC risk [odds ratio (OR) = 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07, 1.13], but this association …

Use Of Wearable Sensors To Measure Improvements In Real World Upper Extremity Activity After Brachial Plexus Reconstruction, Arakua N Welbeck, Catherine E Lang, David M Brogan, Christopher J Dy
2020-Current year OA Pubs
PURPOSE: Current functional assessments after brachial plexus (BP) reconstruction, including surgeon-graded active range of motion and strength scores, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs), have limitations. This study evaluated the feasibility of wearable sensors to quantify recovery and functional outcomes following BP reconstruction. We hypothesized that sensor-derived measures of daily upper-extremity use would correlate with PROs and that real-world upper-extremity use would improve.
METHODS: Traumatic BP injury patients wore bilateral wrist accelerometers for 7-day periods at 3- to 6-month intervals. Data were grouped relative to timing of reconstruction. Duration and magnitude of upper-extremity activity were expressed as ratios of injured to uninjured …

Community-acquired multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacterales bacteria are an increasing public health concern, yet whether households play a role in community spread remains unclear. We investigated 150 households with children in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, for MDR Enterobacterales. We cultured swab specimens from household members and environmental surfaces for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We also performed whole-genome sequencing in the 53 (35%) households where >1 MDR Enterobacterales species were recovered. Enterobacter hormaechei predominated, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pantoea species. Whole-genome sequencing revealed closely related strains shared between persons and environmental surfaces, suggesting potential intra-household transmission. We identified >1 horizontal gene …

Early Results Of Sotatercept Treatment In Patients With Severe Pulmonary Hypertension And A Potts Shunt, Manish A Aggarwal, Kelly Merrill, Delphine Yung, R Mark Grady
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Twelve patients with severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) who had a pulmonary artery-to-descending aorta (Potts) shunt were treated with the novel PH drug sotatercept for an average of 12 months. Overall, the group showed significant improvement in a number of clinical parameters with no serious complications. Thus, a trial of sotatercept could be considered prior to an invasive intervention in patients with severe PH. Similarly, it may also be useful in patients with Eisenmenger-like physiology.

BACKGROUND: The optimal graft choice for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) remains a subject of ongoing debate. In practice, graft selection in ACLR is multifactorial, with patient characteristics, activity level, and surgeon preference/training background all playing a crucial role in the clinical decision-making process. While graft trends have been reported across select professional sports leagues, none have focused specifically on professional soccer.
PURPOSE: To report current trends in graft preference for ACLR among Major League Soccer (MLS) surgeons.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A 39-question survey was distributed to 27 orthopaedic surgeons affiliated with MLS teams in January 2025. The …

Introduction To The Northern Illinois University Law Review 2026 Symposium, Ashley Larsen
Northern Illinois University Law Review
In the fifty years since the advent of Agricultural Law as a field, there has been a cascade of changes and new laws that impact the everyday farmer. In 2025 alone, the National Agricultural Law Center noted ten hot button issues impacting laws and policies surrounding agriculture. Issues mentioned span from changes in pesticide regulations to alleged anticompetitive conduct in the beef sector. Recent discussions in Agricultural Law heavily concern the development of technology, including the ever more complex software in farm equipment, and the growth of artificial intelligence. As technology continues to advance, these conversations will only grow more …

U.S. Regulation And Litigation Regarding Gmos: A Cautionary Tale Of A Piecemeal Framework, Michael R. Reese, George V. Granade
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Bioengineered crops using genetically modified organisms (GMOs or GM) are big business in the United States. In little more than two decades, GM agriculture constitutes more than 90% of crops such as corn, soy, and canola. The acceptance of GMO foods by consumers, however, has not been as robust—leading to demand for labeling regulations so consumers can identify whether their foods contain GMOs. U.S. law governing GMOs, particularly food labeling, lacks a comprehensive regulatory scheme and is instead highly fragmented. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has debated how to label such foods for over a decade, issuing no rules …

Bringing The Museum To The Library: A Collaboration Between A Natural History Museum And An Academic Science Library, Angela D. Price, Jean Bossart
Collaborative Librarianship
A persistent challenge on college campuses is effectively connecting students with the wide array of university resources available to them. At the University of Florida, an opportunity to address this challenge emerged when the Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH), a major campus institution with extensive scientific collections, was scheduled for a 15-month closure due to renovations. In response, librarians at the Marston Science Library initiated a collaborative partnership with FLMNH, offering the library as a venue for science-related events and programming. This collaboration enhanced student engagement, added a non-traditional venue for science learning and interaction, and proved mutually beneficial …

‘Insistent’ Objectors: The (Ab)Use Of Procedural Defenses Before The International Court Of Justice, Damian A. Gonzalez-Salzberg, Eoin Campbell
Michigan Journal of International Law
Procedural defenses refer to tactical devices that object to either a court’s jurisdiction or to the admissibility of an application, aimed at stopping a court from deciding on the merits of a case or, at least, at limiting the scope of its decision. From its creation in June 1945 and up to the end of 2024, the International Court of Justice (“ICJ”) has adjudicated 101 cases, with almost 80% of them featuring procedural defenses raised by states. These defenses have not only been plentiful, but have been extremely effective, leading to the ICJ’s refusal to decide on the merits of …

The curriculum was designed in alignment with the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), Empowerment Theory (ET), and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) frameworks. These frameworks were used to determine the selection and sequencing of learning activities. As reflected in CTML principles, the use of texts, images, infographics, and videos enhances knowledge retention and information comprehension and helps prevent cognitive overload. Through activities, homework, and family engagement, the principles of ET were incorporated into the curriculum to facilitate participants’ perceived control over food-related decisions. Additionally, by applying the principles of SCT, the curriculum incorporates scenario-based questions, opportunities to engage with peers, …
