Integration Of The Internet Into The Curriculum: A Model Application Exploring The Iditarod, Melanie Kingham

All Graduate Projects

This manuscript is intended to serve as a model and resource for elementary teachers seeking to incorporate use of the Internet into their curriculum. A central premise of the document is that the Internet can serve as a valuable learning tool when it is part of an integrated, project based instructional program. A discussion of the rationale supporting this position is provided, as well as a review of related literature and research. Issues and considerations for those developing Internet based curricula are addressed. A sample Internet based curriculum for primary students, "The Spirit of Adventure," is offered as an illustration …

An Individualized Spelling Program, Rashelle Noreen Pratz Jan 2000

An Individualized Spelling Program, Rashelle Noreen Pratz

All Graduate Projects

Spelling is a subject taught in school that is often in debate about the most effective way to teach it. There has been vast research about the correct way to teach spelling. Traditionally, spelling has been taught with word lists compiled of isolated words that students don't often use in everyday writing. Advocates for new ways to teach spelling suggest the use of high frequency words and words students will most often use in their writing experiences. This project report provides an individualized spelling program to fit the needs of each student, in which learning to spell plays a significant …

Promoting Reading Literacy In The Home Of Spanish Speaking Students, Erica G. Rodgriguez Jan 2000

Promoting Reading Literacy In The Home Of Spanish Speaking Students, Erica G. Rodgriguez

All Graduate Projects

Research related to the bilingual and bicultural issues of emergent literacy, family literacy, and intergenerational literacy, factors that promote literacy, parent involvement, and family literacy programs was read, evaluated, and summarized. From this literature review it became evident that when children develop literacy skills in their native language and/or English and learn to interact with literacy, learning to read and write becomes easier. A handbook, written in English and Spanish, was designed and printed providing reading strategies and activities for parents to promote reading literacy in the home.

The Development Of Xenopus Tropicalis Transgenic Lines And Their Use In Studying Lens Developmental Timing In Living Embryos, Martin F. Offield, Nicholas Hirsch, Robert M. Grainger Jan 2000

The Development Of Xenopus Tropicalis Transgenic Lines And Their Use In Studying Lens Developmental Timing In Living Embryos, Martin F. Offield, Nicholas Hirsch, Robert M. Grainger

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The generation of reporter lines for observing lens differentiation in vivo demonstrates a new strategy for embryological manipulation and allows us to address a long-standing question concerning the timing of the onset of differentiation. Xenopus tropicalis was used to make GFP reporter lines with &#;1-crystallin promoter elements directing GFP expression within the early lens. X. tropicalis is a close relative of X. laevis that shares the same ease of tissue manipulation with the added benefits of a diploid genome and faster life cycle. The efficiency of the Xenopus transgenic technique was improved in order to generate greater numbers of normal, …

An Analysis Of Pteropus Livingstonii Roost Habitat: Indicators For Forest Conservation On Anjouan And Moheli, Elise F. Granek

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Livingstone's fruit bat (Pteropus livingstonii) is an endangered and endemic species found only on the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli, Comoros. A study was conducted into the habitats selected by P. livingstonii, as part of a project to assess areas for nature reserves which will be able to protect and conserve forest resources in the islands; the bat is postulated to be a useful indicator of undisturbed forest. Known roost sites (n=9) before the survey were between 500 and 1100 m altitude, on steeply sloping land, with some indigenous forest cover present. Thirteen new potential roost sites were identified, of …

Every Man's An Odysseus: An Analysis Of The Nostos-Theme In Corelli's Mandolin, Emily A. Mcdermott Jan 2000

Every Man's An Odysseus: An Analysis Of The Nostos-Theme In Corelli's Mandolin, Emily A. Mcdermott

Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series

In the sparkling first chapter of Louis de Bernieres's Corelli's Mandolin, the world of Homer's Odysseus is explicitly invoked. This is hardly surprising in a historical novel which will detail the Italian occupation of the Greek island of Cephallonia, near neighbor of Odysseus's Ithaca, during World War II. What is less immediately apparent is that the novel contains a further pattern of inexplicit allusion to the Odyssey, along with a pervasive theme of nostos. Emphasis on "homecoming" helps create the novel's ardent encomium to the Greek homeland that inspires such fierce love of place in its people …

Law As Interpretation, Charles W. Collier Jan 2000

Law As Interpretation, Charles W. Collier

UF Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, I shall trace out separate professional narratives in common law, constitutional law, and in legal cases turning on the distinction between community and society (Part III). But first I should like to situate these legal-professional narratives within a broader interdisciplinary framework (Part II).

A Theory Of Legal Strategy, Lynn M. Lopucki, Walter O. Weyrauch Jan 2000

A Theory Of Legal Strategy, Lynn M. Lopucki, Walter O. Weyrauch

UF Law Faculty Publications

By the conventional view, case outcomes are largely the product of courts' application of law to facts. Even when courts do not generate outcomes in this manner, prevailing legal theory casts them as the arbiters of those outcomes. In a competing strategic view, lawyers and parties construct legal outcomes in what amounts to a contest of skill. Though the latter view better explains the process, no theory has yet been propounded as to how lawyers can replace judges as arbiters. This article propounds such a theory. It classifies legal strategies into three types: those that require willing acceptance by judges, …

Integrating fertilizer N (FN) with legume green manures (GM) can foster sustainable and environmentally sound agricultural systems in subtropical, semiarid soils low in organic matter. A 4-yr replicated field experiment with irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotations was conducted on a sandy loam soil in the Punjab of India to evaluate the effects of incorporating cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) or sesbania (Sesbania aculeata L.) GM on crop productivity, N-use efficiency, and NO3 leaching. Rice grain yields with pretransplant incorporation of 20 and 40 Mg GM ha-1 (GM20 and …

Agency, Equality, And Antidiscrimination Law, Tracy E. Higgins, Laura A. Rosenbury Jan 2000

Agency, Equality, And Antidiscrimination Law, Tracy E. Higgins, Laura A. Rosenbury

UF Law Faculty Publications

Some commentators, perhaps a minority, have argued that the Equal Protection Clause should be read to require the use of race-conscious policies when necessary to eradicate or remedy the most serious consequences of racial inequality. Others have argued that such policies, though not required, should be permitted when duly adopted by the majority of the populace to promote the interests of an historically oppressed minority. Still others, including now a majority of the Supreme Court, take the view that the Constitution forbids virtually all explicit uses of race by the state.

In this Essay, we do not enter this debate …

Design And Application Of A Polyclonal Peptide Antiserum For The Universal Detection Of Leptin Protein, Mark P. Richards, Thomas J. Caperna, Theodore H. Elasser, Christopher M. Ashwell, John P. Mcmurtry Jan 2000

Design And Application Of A Polyclonal Peptide Antiserum For The Universal Detection Of Leptin Protein, Mark P. Richards, Thomas J. Caperna, Theodore H. Elasser, Christopher M. Ashwell, John P. Mcmurtry

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An epitope-specific polyclonal antiserum was produced in rabbits immunized against a synthetic 15 amino acid peptide (QRVTGLDFIPGLHPV) derived from the coding sequence reported for the porcine leptin gene (GenBank Accession No. U59894). This peptide contains a core sequence comprised of eight amino acids (GLDFIPGL) that is totally conserved in all leptin proteins studied to date. Purified recombinant human, mouse, rat, pig, and chicken leptin proteins were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electro-blotted onto PVDF membranes. Western blots were developed employing the leptin-specific peptide antiserum with an alkaline-phosphatase-conjugated anti-rabbit IgG second antibody chromogenic system. The peptide antiserum was found …

Continuous Passive Motion And Physical Therapy Versus Physical Therapy Alone In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Neal A. Cashman Jan 2000

Continuous Passive Motion And Physical Therapy Versus Physical Therapy Alone In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Neal A. Cashman

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

This study investigated the effect of continuous passive motion (CPM) on the rehabilitation of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Over the years, CPM use in the treatment of TKA has been debated whether it is effective enough to justify the medical expense that accompanies it.

Sixteen subjects who underwent TKA surgery participated in the study. Twelve subjects were in the CPM group and four subjects were in the non-CPM group. Groups were determined by the surgeon's rehabilitation preference of using the CPM or not using the CPM.

Post surgical subjects were treated with the CPM and physical therapy or …

A Comparison Between Edema And Lymphedema, Janelle Sunnarborg Jan 2000

A Comparison Between Edema And Lymphedema, Janelle Sunnarborg

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The terms edema and lymphedema are often used interchangeably but treatment approaches for these forms of swelling differ. The purpose of this paper is to compare the treatments for edema and lymphedema, provide a background in the anatomy of the circulatory system and discuss signs, symptoms, and causes of swelling. Management of edema is directed toward its cause but physical therapy treatment may also be appropriate. Lymphedema remains a risk for years following initial injury, therefore, preventative measures are especially important to address, to decrease the occurrence of cellulitis.

Physical therapy treatment for edema and lymphedema include elevation, compression, exercise, …

Canadian Same Sex Relationship Recognition Struggles And The Contradictory Nature Of Legal Victories, Brenda Cossman Jan 2000

Canadian Same Sex Relationship Recognition Struggles And The Contradictory Nature Of Legal Victories, Brenda Cossman

Cleveland State Law Review

I want to pick up on one of the themes running through virtually all of the papers in this symposium-the contradictory nature of law. Legal victories-and defeats-are always fragile, partial and contradictory. The perspective I bring to this theme is a Canadian one, where in the context of gay and lesbian struggles, legal victories now outweigh legal defeats. I will tell a story of these legal victories, which resulted in a much celebrated case in 1999 known as M v. H., in which the Supreme Court of Canada recognized the equality rights of same sex couples, and struck down a …

Straight Release: Justice Delayed, Justice Denied , Timothy J. Mcginty Jan 2000

Straight Release: Justice Delayed, Justice Denied , Timothy J. Mcginty

Cleveland State Law Review

This Thesis discusses the ‘straight release’ program implemented by the Cleveland Police Department in the late 1990’s. It starts by describing the 24-hour charge or release rule, and how criminals were arrested, released, and arraignment notices were later sent to them by mail. Criminals used aliases to hinder the indictment procedure. Part V discusses national trends in arrest to disposition rates. Parts VI – X discusses Cleveland practices in the criminal justice system. Part XI discusses the effects of failure to identify arrested suspects before releasing them. Part XII describes the chaos of the municipal court. Part XIII discusses the …

Examining Biases And Prejudices: Implications For Art Education, Shirley Hayes Yokley Jan 2000

Examining Biases And Prejudices: Implications For Art Education, Shirley Hayes Yokley

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this paper, I combine an overview of Elisabeth Young-Bruehl’s (1996) socio-psychological examination of group prejudices with a critical examination of artwork by Juan Sánchez to illustrate how issues-based studies of works of art help teachers and students examine and resist biases and prejudices that contribute to oppressive or hegemonic actions.

Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check Jan 2000

Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Multiple dimensions of dialogue as pedagogical practice are examined in the following three essays. In the first piece, “When Life Imitates Art: Notes on the Nature of Dialogue,” poet and essayist Jane Vanderbosch reflects about the politics of silence and voice in graduate school. She analyzes how power and politics charge the atmosphere of the classroom. In “The Pedagogy of Dialogue: A Relation Between Means and End,“ Grace Deniston-Trochta focuses on self-examining the possibility of dialogue in a large “pit” classroom. She proposes teacher as listener/learner, a teacher who is self-reflective and respectful. In the final essay, “Managing the Silence …

Measurement Of Information Technology Investment Payoff, Qing Wang Jan 2000

Measurement Of Information Technology Investment Payoff, Qing Wang

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report evaluates the measurements of information technology investments payoff, and recommends a theoretical framework for testing the costs and benefits of Internet e-commerce investments. A number of research studies are referenced to evaluate the accuracy of the traditional, quantitative-oriented measurements and introduce a few contemporary, more qualitative-oriented alternatives. As one of the major types of information technology investments, Internet e-commerce is chosen as a case to evaluate the measurements by applying the theories generated from various research studies. Based on the case analysis, contemporary approaches are justified and adopted to establish a three-step framework of measuring Internet e-commerce investment …
