Photodegradation Of Pcbs In Natural Waters, Adriana R. Nicolaescu
Photodegradation Of Pcbs In Natural Waters, Adriana R. Nicolaescu
Masters Theses
PCBs are widely distributed in the environment and they are biologically refractory and toxic compounds. There is great interest in understanding their fate in the environment, and also for finding safe and effective degradation methods.
This study is concerned with the photodegradation of four PCB congeners: PCB 5, PCB 18, PCB 77, PCB 128 in natural waters. Natural waters contain humic substances which can greatly influence the environmental fate of the PCBs. The different degradation of the four congeners was studied in standardized systems and in humic acid or nitrate solutions, under environmental conditions. DMDE and Methoxyclor (whose environmental half-lifetimes …

Widespread Tuberculous Calcification, M. Qaseem Khan, Ali Q. Al-Qahtani, Sami Al-Momen, Samir A. Aldhurais, Mehmuda Ahmad
Saudi Medical Journal
We are reporting an unusual case of widespread abdominal calcifications, in the peri-colic mesentery, liver and spleen. The diagnostic laparoscopy showed multiple encapsulated calcified hard rounded masses of varying size and shape, with marked adhesions in and around the bowel and mesentery. Histopathology identified them as calcified lymph nodes, but was unable to highlight the pathogenesis of these calcifications. The diagnosis of post tuberculous calcification of lymph nodes is made on the basis of exclusion. The subject was reviewed, to the best of our knowledge, there is no similar case, with such an extent of abdominal calcifications reported in the …

The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy R. Mashburn
The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy R. Mashburn
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article argues that the defense attorney has a multifaceted fiduciary duty toward the client with mental disability. That duty requires, first and foremost, respect for the autonomy of the client. The lawyer shows that respect not only by heeding the wishes of the competent client but by refusing to heed the wishes of the incompetent client. A coherent approach to the competency construct is therefore important. Following the lead of Professor Bonnie, this Article has broken competency into two components: assistance competency and decisional competency. It has defined the former concept in traditional terms, as an understanding of the …

Target-And Stage-Dependent Influences On Axonal Outgrowth Of An Identified Motorneuron In Leech Cns Explants, April Crowley
Target-And Stage-Dependent Influences On Axonal Outgrowth Of An Identified Motorneuron In Leech Cns Explants, April Crowley
Masters Theses
The neural circuit that controls rhythmic contraction of the hearts in the medicinal leech, Hirudo medicinalis, provides an amenable model to investigate pathfinding and target selection. The bilaterally paired heart tubes (HT) in leech are eventually innervated by the heart excitor motomeuron (HE) following a period of remodeling that requires the presence of the HT. To begin characterizing possible HT-derived cues, co-cultures of CNS with innervated HT have been used. Previous work demonstrated that young, but not adult, HT was able to support profuse general outgrowth, but the HE extended few projections onto HT of any age. Current studies …
Environmental Sociology: An Analysis Of Trends, Gregory M. Fulkerson
Environmental Sociology: An Analysis Of Trends, Gregory M. Fulkerson
Masters Theses
This thesis describes the current status of environmental sociology, and presents an invitation to the reader to engage in the topic of the environment. It begins with a review of the literature, focusing on the origins of sociology and the theory of ecology, and presents the framework for the content analysis. The content analysis investigates the content and number of environmental sociology articles in mainstream sociological journals. In addition to the articles themselves, it analyzes the schools and authors of these articles. This analysis is supplemented with an analysis of environmental journals, enumerating the total number of environmental journals in …

Apocalyptic Visions, Amir Hussain
Apocalyptic Visions, Amir Hussain
Journal of Religion & Film
On November 20, 1999, I was privileged to chair a session of the Religion, Film and Visual Culture group at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR). The session was entitled "Film and the Apocalypse", and consisted of the five papers that are collected in this volume. The word "apocalypse" comes from a Greek root meaning to reveal or uncover, which is precisely what I understand films to do, reveal something about the world. In these five papers, much is revealed about the apocalyptic visions of a number of contemporary Hollywood films. This essay will be a …
