If Only I Knew: The Stranger In The Twentieth-Century Short Story., Ryan S. Otto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is divided into two major parts. The first explores the variations of the stranger genre in the American twentieth-century short story by examining the short works of Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, Eudora Welty, Katherine Anne Porter, Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, and David James Duncan. The second provides five original works of fiction that represent my understanding of the genre. Observations in the first section fall into three basic categories: "The Mysterious Stranger: Character," "The Tough Guy: Conflict," and "The Nature of Knowing: Theme." "The Character in Transition" chapter relates my observations in the critical study to the structure …

Assessing West Virginia Nipf Owner Characteristics And Preferred Assistance Topics, Daniel Joseph Magill Aug 2000

Assessing West Virginia Nipf Owner Characteristics And Preferred Assistance Topics, Daniel Joseph Magill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Four hundred and fifty-one Non-Industrial-Private-Forest (NIPF) owners (49% response rate) in West Virginia responded to a survey of their forestry assistance needs. Most of the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, their reasons for owning the property, the types of activities they were engaged in on the property and the agencies that provided assistance by themselves significantly (Chi2 & ANOVA) differentiated those interested and not interested in obtaining assistance. However, when all 39 factors were considered together (Logistic Regression) only a small number of these factors were needed to explain the difference between landowners wanting and not wanting a specific assistance …

Effects Of Acetaminophen On Estrogen-Responsive Alkaline Phosphatase In Ishikawa Endometrial Cancer Cells, Janet A. Dowdy Aug 2000

Effects Of Acetaminophen On Estrogen-Responsive Alkaline Phosphatase In Ishikawa Endometrial Cancer Cells, Janet A. Dowdy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the effect of acetaminophen (APAP) on the estrogen-responsive gene alkaline phosphatase in Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells. Basal levels of alkaline phosphatase activity were significantly inhibited in cells treated with 0.03, 0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP compared to control. Alkaline phosphatase activity induced with 1nM estradiol was significantly inhibited in a concentration dependent manner by 0.0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP. APAP did not directly inhibit the activity of alkaline phosphatase at any of the concentrations tested. Increasing estradiol concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1nM) did not alter the level of inhibition of alkaline phosphatase activity by 0.1, 0.3 or …

Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham Aug 2000

Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Impetigo and pharyngitis are two common suppurative infections in man elicited by Streptococcus pyogenes that lead to autoimmune complications in susceptible individuals. Although the underlying mechanisms for the onset of post-streptococcal autoimmunity have yet to be established, experimental information gained thus far suggests that the resultant pathology is a consequence of immunological cross-reactivity between streptococcal antigens, namely the anti-phagocytic factor M protein and host proteins, specifically myosin. Experimental animal model systems developed to date have predominantly relied on the immunization of adult animals with M protein emulsed in adjuvant. In the laboratory we have undertaken studies with mice to examine …

Halo Acids And Dmso: Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution At Room Temperature Conditions, Pankaj Kulshrestha Aug 2000

Halo Acids And Dmso: Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution At Room Temperature Conditions, Pankaj Kulshrestha

Theses

A simple, safe and cost effective experiment to demonstrate electrophilic aromatic substitution in the undergraduate laboratory can be accomplished by placing a small amount of N,N Dimethyl Aniline or a few crystals of Phenol in an NMR tube containing an appropriate level of deutero DMSO. After observation of the expanded proton NMR spectrum of the aromatic region, a few drops of concentrated HBr and HC1 aqueous acids are added and the NMR spectrum recorded after one hour. Observation of an A,A' B,B' typical four line pattern in the aromatic region of NMR spectrum is direct evidence for the halogenation on …

Mechanical Mouse Lure For Brown Treesnakes, Alexandria C. Lindberg, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark Jul 2000

Mechanical Mouse Lure For Brown Treesnakes, Alexandria C. Lindberg, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The importance of prey movement for stimulating feeding behavior of Brown Treesnakes was tested by using a mechanical mouse model in combination with and without prey odor. Prey movement was found to be important in stimulating brown treesnake feeding behavior. Prey movement combined with prey odor was not significantly different than prey movement alone. In the development of simple artificial lures based on the stimulus of live mice, visual lures lacking movement are likely to be ineffective. Lures that combine a visual moving stimulus with prey odor are likely to be the most effective artificial lure for trapping brown treesnakes.

Metals Of The Book Of Mormon, W. Revell Phillips

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

For three weeks in February 2000, a team of BYU geologists worked in coastal Dhofar, focusing on geological formations that could have produced the metals needed by Nephi for making tools to build a ship. This article discusses the ores and processes that Nephi would have employed and considers the possibility that the coast of Dhofar may be a candidate for the location of Nephi’s shipbuilding.

Desert Epiphany: Sariah And The Women In 1 Nephi, Camille Fronk Jul 2000

Desert Epiphany: Sariah And The Women In 1 Nephi, Camille Fronk

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Insights can be gained by considering the eight-year wilderness sojourn of Lehi’s company through the eyes of the women who were there. Leaving the comforts of civilization for the difficulties of the desert would have been very challenging. While the record in 1 Nephi mentions nine women, Sariah was the only one identified by name. Nephi records Sariah’s struggles as well as her testimony. The record of the women in 1 Nephi communicates much about the need to seek and receive one’s own witness of truth.

Brazil: Oil Spills Bring Calls For Accountability, Notisur

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

After three damaging oil spills within ten days, environmentalists called for more accountability, especially from state-owned oil giant Petroleo Brasileiro (PETROBRAS). The latest rash of incidents followed a January spill from a broken PETROBRAS pipeline, which did extensive damage to the Guapimirim mangrove swamps in Guanabara Bay just north of Rio de Janeiro . In the most serious of the latest spills, a pipeline at the Getulio Vargas Refinery in Araucaria burst and dumped more than 4 million liters of crude oil into the Barigui River, a tributary of the Iguacu River, on July 16. Officials called the spill the …
