The Impact Of Lianas On Tree Regeneration In Tropical Forest Canopy Gaps: Evidence For An Alternative Pathway Of Gap‐Phase Regeneration, Stefan A. Schnitzer, James W. Dalling, Walter P. Carson
The Impact Of Lianas On Tree Regeneration In Tropical Forest Canopy Gaps: Evidence For An Alternative Pathway Of Gap‐Phase Regeneration, Stefan A. Schnitzer, James W. Dalling, Walter P. Carson
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
1 Regeneration in forest canopy gaps is thought to lead invariably to the rapid recruitment and growth of trees and the redevelopment of the canopy. Our observations, however, suggest that an alternate successional pathway is also likely, whereby gap‐phase regeneration is dominated by lianas and stalled in a low‐canopy state for many years. We investigated gap‐phase regeneration in an old‐growth tropical forest on Barro Colorado Island (BCI) in Panama to test the following two hypotheses: (i) many gaps follow a pathway in which they remain at a low canopy height and are dominated by lianas and (ii) the paucity of …

Nitrogen Budgets Of Phloem-Feeding Bark Beetles With And Without Symbiotic Fungi, Matthew P. Ayres, Richard T. Wilkens, Jonathan J. Ruel, María J. Lombardero, Erich Vallery
Nitrogen Budgets Of Phloem-Feeding Bark Beetles With And Without Symbiotic Fungi, Matthew P. Ayres, Richard T. Wilkens, Jonathan J. Ruel, María J. Lombardero, Erich Vallery
Dartmouth Scholarship
The nitrogen content of plant tissue is low relative to that of herbivores; as a consequence, dietary N can limit the growth and reproduction of herbivores and select for attributes that increase N acquisition. Bark beetles face a particularly severe challenge because the phloem that they consume is very low in nitrogen and phosphorus relative to their requirements. We quantified variation in the phloem concentrations of N and P in the host tree, Pinus taeda, and evaluated the following hypotheses regarding the role of symbiotic fungi in nutrient budgets of the herbivore Dendroctonus frontalis: D. frontalis experience variation …

Reconciling Arguments About The Self-Preserving Soul With Evolutionary Theory, James M. Donovan
Reconciling Arguments About The Self-Preserving Soul With Evolutionary Theory, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Advocates of a self-preserving soul must somehow integrate that soul with an organic body which is the product of an evolutionary history. Efforts to resolve this version of the sorites paradox (at what point in the gradual evolution of Homo sapiens was the step taken from the soul-less to the ensouled?) can result in conflict between the two theories. The position is taken here that, given the standard of Popperian verisimilitude, any such conflict signals a weakness in the soul-theory, and not in evolutionism.
Five soul-theories (those by Plato, Aristotle, William of Auvergne, Hume, and Heidegger) are evaluated on three …
Bipolar Disorder And Locus Of Control: Implications For Treatment Compliance, Linda J. Ryan-Cox
Bipolar Disorder And Locus Of Control: Implications For Treatment Compliance, Linda J. Ryan-Cox
Theses
Theoretically, a paradigm shift in the 1960s made community-based care and out-patient treatment an acceptable alternative to institutionalization of the chronically mentally ill. Utilizing the Levenson Multidimensional Locus of Control Scale for Psychiatric Patients, the author conducted a causal-comparative study to determine if a link exists between having bipolar disorder, a chronic mental illness, and an external locus of control, a link which might explain the inability of this population to maintain their optimal level of mental health utilizing the out-patient treatment model. Though the study failed to demonstrate any significant differences in external measures of loci of control between …

Reputation Management: The Effect Of Ceo Behavior During A Crisis, Ellen J. Shockley
Theses and Dissertations
This purpose of this thesis was to study how CEO behavior during a crisis impacts the organization's lasting reputation.
A thorough review of relevant publications, as well as intercept surveys, content analyses and email surveys, was conducted to test the hypotheses.
Fifty intercept surveys were conducted over two weekends to discover opinions about the issue. Respondents appearing to be age 25 or older were randomly selected. A content analysis was conducted using articles from Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal to determine the media's tone on the CEOs of Odwalla, Jack in the Box, Dow Coming and Exxon. A total …

Flooded Lifeways: A Study Of The Garrison Dam And Its Environmental Impact Upon The Three Affiliated Tribes Of The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Brian K. Russell
Theses and Dissertations
On December 22, Congress authorized the Flood Control Act of 1944, later named the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program (PSMBP). The primary purpose of the PSMBP, which would require the construction of six main stem dams on the Missouri River, was to provide flood control, navigation, irrigation, and hydropower. The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara nations, the Three Affiliated Tribes, maintained a reservation and way of life on Fort Berthold which lay in the direct path of the water that would form the reservoir behind one of the dams, the Garrison Dam.
It is important to acknowledge that the Garrison Dam also …
An Examination Of Voir Dire From An Interactionist Perspective, Peter R. Stevenson
An Examination Of Voir Dire From An Interactionist Perspective, Peter R. Stevenson
Dissertations
Trial attorneys, historically, have used both scientific and unscientific selection techniques to empanel a jury, and these methods continue to be used in contemporary courtrooms. The ability of these techniques to pick a 'good” jury has been shown to have limited utility. This ineffectiveness may be due, in part, to a false assumption about the passivity of prospective jurors during questioning. An interactionist perspective sees individuals as much more active in that they control the information given out. Most potential jurors offer genuine presentations of self during jury selection in that they truthfully respond to the questions posed by courtroom …

Physiology Of A Microgravity Environment Invited Review: Microgravity And Skeletal Muscle, Robert H. Fitts, Danny R. Riley, Jeffrey J. Widrick

Spaceflight (SF) has been shown to cause skeletal muscle atrophy; a loss in force and power; and, in the first few weeks, a preferential atrophy of extensors over flexors. The atrophy primarily results from a reduced protein synthesis that is likely triggered by the removal of the antigravity load. Contractile proteins are lost out of proportion to other cellular proteins, and the actin thin filament is lost disproportionately to the myosin thick filament. The decline in contractile protein explains the decrease in force per cross-sectional area, whereas the thin-filament loss may explain the observed postflight increase in the maximal velocity …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Acceptability And Effectiveness Of Computer-Based Adjunctive Parent Training For Child Noncompliance, Dwayne M. Munneke
A Preliminary Investigation Of The Acceptability And Effectiveness Of Computer-Based Adjunctive Parent Training For Child Noncompliance, Dwayne M. Munneke
Dissertations
Noncompliance with parent requests is a commonly reported behavior problem for clinic-based child referrals. Parent skills training has been empirically demonstrated as an effective treatment for helping parents increase positive child behaviors and decrease negative behaviors. Unfortunately, many therapists and agencies are unable to implement parent-training programs due to limited therapist training, limited economic resources, or long waiting lists.
Adjunctive, computer-based, treatment programs have become increasingly popular in both research and clinical settings for facilitating psychological assessment and intervention. This project involved the development and preliminary investigation of the effectiveness and acceptability of a computer-based program designed to supplement therapist-delivered …

Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As a decidedly American tradition, the long poem has become the premier literary endeavor for poets in the twentieth-century. Writers such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams have pursued the long poem, but under the auspices of the "modern epic." Three postmodern long poems---Kenneth Koch's Seasons on Earth, Edward Dom's Gunslinger, and James Merrill's The Changing Light at Sandover---illustrate a dramatic rupture with the texts of modernism by introducing comic situations and multi-voiced narration---situations described by Mikhail Bakhtin as "dialogism" and "carnival," receptively---into the canon of American long poems. These innovations allow the postmodern long poem …
Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui
Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
High-molecular-weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent in the environment although a wide variety of microorganisms can metabolize PAHs. In the past decades, laboratory and filed studies have shown that PAH degradation in soil is often limited by poor bioavailability and oxygen availability. Bound residue formation of PAHs with macromolecules of soil organic matter is an important fate mechanism. More recently, phytoremediation for PAH-contaminated soils is being explored. It is believed that PAH degradation may be enhanced in rhizosphere soil due to the improved aeration condition and the active soil microbial community sustained by root exudates. Whether certain root exudates …

Early Instar Growth And Survivorship In The Common Baskettail Dragonfly Epitheca Cynosura (Anisoptera: Corduliidae)., Bryan Arthur Reece
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Egg masses of Epitheca cynosura were collected from Bays Mountain Park, Tennessee, USA, in June, 1999. Newly hatched individuals were placed into enclosures and sampled at scheduled time intervals throughout the summer. Enclosures were exposed to combinations of high and low densities and presence/absence of a second-year class E. cynosura predator. Survivorship, mean head widths, and mean dry masses were compared across treatments. Due to poor recovery of early-instar larvae, survivorship showed no significant differences in mortality among treatments. The predator present treatment caused significantly smaller head widths and dry masses only on days 42 and 55. The density treatment …
Hidden Mechanisms Generate Negative Feedbacks In A Stochastic Model: A Comment On Murray, Andrew J. Tyre, Brigitte Tenhumberg
Hidden Mechanisms Generate Negative Feedbacks In A Stochastic Model: A Comment On Murray, Andrew J. Tyre, Brigitte Tenhumberg
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The debate between density-dependent and densityindependent population regulation is one of the oldest and most vociferous in ecology. Australian ecologists participated from the beginning (Nicholson 1933; Andrewartha & Birch 1954). Despite recent efforts to put the debate to rest (Turchin 1995, 1999), there appears little likelihood of either side abandoning the ramparts (Bonsall et al. 1998). Murray (2000; this issue) uses a stochastic simulation model to argue that a significant statistical relationship between birth rate and population size (i.e. density dependence) can arise in the absence of negative feedbacks of population size on fecundity. In this comment we demonstrate that …

Experimental And Analytical Modal Analysis Of The Gleason Gp-130 Hob Column Components, Joshua Horvath
Theses
Machine tool vibration has and will be an issue in industry as long as shaping by means of physical material removal continues to be used. Developing a machine that can accommodate this natural vibration that occurs in the cutting process is a goal for every new machine design at the Gleason Works, Rochester. Knowing the vibration signature of a machine is very helpful in determining critical and non-critical cutter excitation frequencies. An analytical frequency analysis of simplified virtual models was completed to aid in the design process of the new Gleason GP130 Hobber. To determine the accuracy of these results, …
