A Dual Encryption Protocol For Scalable Secure Multicasting, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok K. Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper we propose a dual encryption protocol for scalable secure multicasting. Multicasting is a scalable solution for group communication. It howevel; poses several unique security problems. We use hierarchical subgrouping to achieve scalability. Third party hosts or members of the multicast group are designated as subgroup managers. They are responsible for secret key distribution and group membership management at the subgroup level. Unlike existing secure multicast protocols, our protocol need not trust the subgroup managers with the distribution of data encryption keys. The dual encryption protocol proposed in this paper distributes encrypted data encryption keys via subgroup managers. …

Models In Manual Materials Handling, M. M. Ayoub, Jeffrey C. Woldstad Jan 1999

Models In Manual Materials Handling, M. M. Ayoub, Jeffrey C. Woldstad

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The ergonomics approach to manual materials handling (MMH) tasks defines a Man-Task-Environment System. A generally accepted means of minimizing MMH related injuries is to design MMH tasks so that the demands of the tasks are less than the capacities of the individuals performing these tasks. Task design is dependent, in part, on the availability of comparable data for task demands and worker capacities. The generation of the appropriate data is dependent, in part, on being able to identify the pertinent capacity parameters of manual materials handling activities.

In the past, a substantial effort has been directed at determining ‘safe’ lifting …

Road Rescue Implements A Continuous Process Improvement Framework, John Olson, Paul Savory Jan 1999

Road Rescue Implements A Continuous Process Improvement Framework, John Olson, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Continuous improvement programs traditionally focus on making small incremental improvements to a system. Unfortunately, their success can be limited due to the rapid changing environment within which most small companies operate. Improvement efforts should be flexible enough to capitalize on incremental and radical changes to a system. This paper presents a case analysis of how Road Rescue, an ambulance manufacturer, uses a continuous improvement framework to capitalize on both radical and incremental improvement opportunities. Results include a 10% increase in throughput, reduced cycle time of 44%, increased customer satisfaction, and higher quality.

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden Jan 1999

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article addresses two central issues regarding the 1998-99 National Basketball Association (“NBA”) lockout: 1) its impact on labor law doctrine and 2) what it reveals about the state of labor relations in the United States. The author concludes that, while the use of the traditional lockout weapon did not break any new ground in the area of labor law, the unique attributes of the NBA labor dispute provide insight into the condition of the American labor movement and public perceptions of unions. In particular, the author notes that the NBA lockout highlights both the dramatic differences in the power …

Alcohol Education For Elementary School Children, Pam R. Stamper Jan 1999

Alcohol Education For Elementary School Children, Pam R. Stamper

Graduate Research Papers

In 1992, close to 90% of high school seniors reported past experience with alcohol, while 50% stated use in the last month and 3% reported daily use of alcohol (Adger & Werner, 1994). According to a report in 1993, 78% of high school seniors had used alcohol in the past year and one-third stated that they drank heavily (Feaster, 1996). The average age of children first using alcohol, outside of the family or religious functions, was twelve years (Bosworth & Cueto, 1994; Feaster, 1996; Mason & Hodge, 1995). National data showed that adolescents and preadolescents used alcohol at age eleven …

Integrating Technology Into A 1st Grade Classroom, Kimberly Swartz

Graduate Research Papers

America's public schools are in the middle of one of the most exciting periods in history. Changes in society, technology, and the economy are creating a demand for well-educated people. Vice President Al Gore has estimated that by the year 2000, sixty percent of new jobs in the United States will require advanced technological skills (Clinton & Gore, 1998). Burness et al. (1997) maintain "Hundreds of reports and articles have detailed the shortcomings of our school system as well. The gap between what people need to know to thrive in today's world and what they learn in school is very …

Public Library/Public School Cooperation In Bettendorf, Iowa, Kristi Anhalt

Graduate Research Papers

A case study was conducted at the Bettendorf Public Library to determine how and why the public library cooperates with the area public schools. Interviews with the public library staff and school media specialists were conducted. Documentation relating to the cooperation was gathered and examined. Lastly, observations were conducted. The relevant data were then compiled and examined for patterns. The data collected show cooperation has occurred with one institution providing the leadership and funds while both institutions benefit. The patterns also indicated that the administrators for both institutions indicate support for the cooperation and that the purpose of the cooperation …

Analysis Of The Gal-Chen–Zhang Single-Doppler Velocity Retrieval, Steven Lazarus, Alan Shapiro, Kelvin Droegemeier Jan 1999

Analysis Of The Gal-Chen–Zhang Single-Doppler Velocity Retrieval, Steven Lazarus, Alan Shapiro, Kelvin Droegemeier

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The authors present herein an analysis of a single-Doppler velocity retrieval (SDVR) technique whereby the unobserved wind components are determined from single-Doppler radar data. The analysis is designed to provide information about the behavior and/or sensitivity of the SDVR scheme as a function of various internal and external parameters as well as about observational errors and weights. Results presented for retrieval of both the mean and local flow indicate that the SDVR breaks down if the reflectivity gradient vanishes or if a reflectivity isoline is locally perpendicular to the radar beam. In the absence of reflectivity or radial velocity errors, …

Climbing Fibre Purkinje Cell Twins Are Found, Donald C. Wunsch, Witali L. Dunin-Barkowski, S. N. Markin, L. N. Podladchikova

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

At the IJCNN'93 in Nagoya we have pronounced a challenging goal: to get activity patterns of airs of Purkinje cells(PC), controlled with the same climbing fiber (CF), - a CF PC Twins problem Here, for the first time in cerebral studies, CF PC twins have been identified and studied. Several important features of the CF PC Twins activity are demonstrated: (1) High constancy of conduction time of impulses of cells of inferior olives to the targetted PCs, (2) a relatively high failure rate (0.05-0.18) of impulse propagation into terminal branches of CF, (3) a salient difference in complex Spikes(CS) - …

Design And Implementation Of Page Based Distributed Shared Memory In Distributed Database Systems, Padmanabhan Raman Jan 1999

Design And Implementation Of Page Based Distributed Shared Memory In Distributed Database Systems, Padmanabhan Raman

Theses

This project is the simulation of page based distributed shared memory originally called IVY proposed by Li in 1986[3] and then by Li and Hudak in 1989[4]. The 'Page Based Distributed Shared Memory System' consists of a collection of clients or workstations connected to a server by a Local Area Network. The server contains a shared memory segment within which the distributed database is located. The shared memory segment is divided in the form of pages and hence the name 'Page Based Distributed Shared Memory System' where each page represents a table within that distributed database. In the simplest variant, …

Effects Of Dissolved Organic Matter And Ph On Heavy Metal Uptake By Sludge Particulates Exemplified By Copper(Ii) And Nickel(Ii): Three-Variable Model, Jianmin Wang, C. P. Huang, Herbert E. Allen, Ira Poesponegoro, Haryanto Poesponegoro, Luis R. Takiyama

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and pH are important factors affecting heavy metal uptake by sludge particulates. Copper(II) and Nickel(II) uptake behavior by primary and secondary sludge particulates was studied under various pH and DOM conditions. A three-variable model, incorporating effects of pH and DOM, was developed to describe heavy metal uptake. Results show that heavy metal uptake by sludge particulates can be better described by the three-variable model than by the modified Langmuir model in a wide pH range.
