Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and pH are important factors affecting heavy metal uptake by sludge particulates. Copper(II) and Nickel(II) uptake behavior by primary and secondary sludge particulates was studied under various pH and DOM conditions. A three-variable model, incorporating effects of pH and DOM, was developed to describe heavy metal uptake. Results show that heavy metal uptake by sludge particulates can be better described by the three-variable model than by the modified Langmuir model in a wide pH range.

A Study Of Package Handling Drops In The United States Postal Service, Thomas Kausch Jan 1999

A Study Of Package Handling Drops In The United States Postal Service, Thomas Kausch

Theses

The objective of this study was to measure drop heights environment within the United States Postal Service. A popular belief has been that the United States Postal Service provided a handling environment that was more severe than other small parcel carriers. Previous studies of small package carriers have documented the handling environments of those carriers. The data gathered during the course of this study were compared to those results. The intent of this study was to provide data that would indicate that the Unites States Postal Service did not provide a handling environment that was more severe than competing carriers. …

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion Jan 1999

Genetic Algorithm And Tabu Search Approaches To Quantization For Dct-Based Image Compression, Michael Champion

Theses

Today there are several formal and experimental methods for image compression, some of which have grown to be incorporated into the Joint Photographers Experts Group (JPEG) standard. Of course, many compression algorithms are still used only for experimentation mainly due to various performance issues. Lack of speed while compressing or expanding an image, poor compression rate, and poor image quality after expansion are a few of the most popular reasons for skepticism about a particular compression algorithm. This paper discusses current methods used for image compression. It also gives a detailed explanation of the discrete cosine transform (DCT), used by …

Identification Of Force Directions Created By Dynamic Events Experienced In The International Air Freight Distribution Environment, William Enderle Jr Jan 1999

Identification Of Force Directions Created By Dynamic Events Experienced In The International Air Freight Distribution Environment, William Enderle Jr

Theses

By linking actual hazards experienced in the field to pre shipment packaging test protocols, the development of a robust packaging specification is developed. This study evaluated the international air freight distribution environment for shipment between the United States and the Netherlands. Utilizing an Environmental Data Recorder, the data identified that different events, other than the normally expected drops and impacts, were experienced. Based on force direction, magnitude and waveform analysis, the data identified that the product is being tossed as it is transported. The results of this study will provide data to enable the creation of a preshipment packaging test …

Ip And Atm Integration: A New Paradigm In Multi-Service Internetworking, Remesh Shanmuganathan Jan 1999

Ip And Atm Integration: A New Paradigm In Multi-Service Internetworking, Remesh Shanmuganathan

Theses

ATM is a widespread technology adopted by many to support advanced data communication, in particular efficient Internet services provision. The expected challenges of multimedia communication together with the increasing massive utilization of IP-based applications urgently require redesign of networking solutions in terms of both new functionalities and enhanced performance. However, the networking context is affected by so many changes, and to some extent chaotic growth, that any approach based on a structured and complex top-down architecture is unlikely to be applicable. Instead, an approach based on finding out the best match between realistic service requirements and the pragmatic, intelligent use …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Boiling Heat Transfer And Critical Heat Flux In A Vertically Oriented Heated Tube, Dominic Peters Jan 1999

An Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Boiling Heat Transfer And Critical Heat Flux In A Vertically Oriented Heated Tube, Dominic Peters

Theses

Boiling and single-phase heat transfer data were taken for water flowing in a vertically oriented circular tube. Heat fluxes of up to 2MW/m2 and wall temperatures up to 135C were obtained in nucleate flow boiling. In film boiling, wall temperatures of up to 400C were obtained with a ninefold decrease in the heat transfer effectiveness after critical heat flux (CHF) was reached. A computer model was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to assist in the design process as well as to provide insight into the transport phenomena not realizable from the instrumentation. Validations of the instrumentation used in …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Evaporation Heat Transfer Cofficient Of Refrigerant R-134a In A Plate Heat Exchanger, Vincent Donowski

Theses

The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant R-134a flowing in a plate heat exchanger is investigated analytically in this study. With the introduction of new HFC refrigerants to replace CFC refrigerants, the understanding and modeling of heat transfer coefficient characteristics is important in designing more efficient evaporators for refrigeration and air conditioning applications. In the present work experimental data for two-phase evaporation heat transfer of refrigerant R-134a in a plate heat exchanger (Yan and Lin, 1999b) is compared with relevant published correlations (Yan and Lin, 1999b; Kandlikar, 1991) in order to explore a proposed correlation scheme to best predict the …

Point Extraction And Matching For Registration Of Infrared Astronomical Images, Adith Chandrasekhar Jan 1999

Point Extraction And Matching For Registration Of Infrared Astronomical Images, Adith Chandrasekhar

Theses

In this thesis, we deal with digital image sequences produced by an infrared detector array. The image sequences are characterized by large variations in noise and gray level statistics from one frame to the next. Moreover, owing to a number of defective pixels in the detector array, the frames are deliberately shifted from each other to improve the statistical properties of the signal and minimize noise. This and the inherent pointing uncertainty of the instrument result in random errors in frame positioning larger than a few pixels. This thesis discusses two point-feature based techniques to register such frames. Image registration, …

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors Technology For Protection Of Machined Metal Parts During Storage And Distribution, Alexander Sobkin Jan 1999

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors Technology For Protection Of Machined Metal Parts During Storage And Distribution, Alexander Sobkin

Theses

The significant dollar losses that can occur when metallic products are damaged or lost, due to rust and corrosion, force many manufacturers to concentrate efforts on corrosion control and prevention during packaging, shipping and storage. Many people often simply accept corrosion as an inevitable problem. Actually, something can and should be done to prolong the life of many metals exposed to corrosive environments. Many of the standard methods to control corrosion, paint, grease and wax, for example, are messy, time consuming and expensive. These methods also pose a potential threat to the environment unless properly treated and disposed. An alternative …
