Contextualizing Homeschooling Data: A Response To Rudner, Kariane Mari Welner, Kevin G. Welner Apr 1999

Contextualizing Homeschooling Data: A Response To Rudner, Kariane Mari Welner, Kevin G. Welner

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Rudner (1999) presents the results of a survey and testing program, administered by Bob Jones University (BJU), for homeschooling students. In this response, we applaud Rudner's contribution to building a greater understanding of the homeschooling movement. However, we also voice a strong concern that what Rudner contributed with one hand, he took back with the other. We contend that Rudner's analysis of the BJU data fails to offer a straightforward explanation of important and striking limitations. The unfortunate result is an inaccurate portrayal of homeschoolers as a white, Christian, monolithic population. Although the results of Rudner's analyses are likely valid …

Academy-Industry Cooperation: Towards A New Convenant For Indian Business Competitiveness, Chiranjib Sen Apr 1999

Academy-Industry Cooperation: Towards A New Convenant For Indian Business Competitiveness, Chiranjib Sen

Working Papers

The role that knowledge plays in competitiveness in the market place, has increased dramatically over the last two decades. This has been arguably one of the most significant economic trends Of the late 20th century-a process linked closely with the rapid internationalization of business and finance, and the emerging dominance of knowledge-intensive companies in the global economy. In India, the business leadership has now recognized the need for knowledge, mainly because the economic liberalization policies of the 1990s have exposed Indian companies to the fhreat of competition. The competitiveness-enhancing knowledge that business firms require is mainly of two types-organizational and …

Privatization And Entrepreneurial Transformation: The Role Of Developmental Financial Institutions, Gerard George, Ganesh N Prabhu Apr 1999

Privatization And Entrepreneurial Transformation: The Role Of Developmental Financial Institutions, Gerard George, Ganesh N Prabhu

Working Papers

With ongoing privatization efforts in emerging economies, governments have supported developmental financial institutions (DFI) to spur entrepreneurial activity in the absence of private venture capitalists. DFIs are quasi-governmental financial institutions with independent managerial control that often act within the constraints of a rapidly changing environment to support and accelerate privatization. In spite of their critical role in economic transformation, DFIs have received little attention in the management literature. We draw on two theoretical frameworks to develop an initial process model of DFI involvement with privatized firms in emerging economies. First, we use stakeholder theory to argue that post-privatization stakeholders differ …

How To Ensure Greater Success In Implementing Organisational Improvement And Restructuring Programmes, C Manohar Reddy Apr 1999

How To Ensure Greater Success In Implementing Organisational Improvement And Restructuring Programmes, C Manohar Reddy

Working Papers

Indian economy has gone through a process of gradual de-regulation in the eighties and this process has accelerated further in nineties. Globalisation and liberalisation have become the catch words of the nineties. Regulation and protectionism of the licence-permit raj had debelitated the competitive capability of many Indian organisations. Since whatever produced could be sold easily, technological upgradation, quality improvement and customer service suffered. As costs could be passed on to the customer without any problem, there was no emphasis on cost consciousness or efficiency. All these handicaps didn't matter in an era of regulation and protectionism.

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France Mar 1999

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

In considering how best to tackle this topic, I ultimately decided that in Nebraska the "best" approach is usually the "most straight forward" one. Given that much of the conversation about distance education is filled with myth and marketing hype, I decided what we could best contribute to the conversation would be the facts. While some of the other authors may have a better in-depth grasp of distance education opportunities and realities in Nebraska, Erik and I come as native Nebraskans with a good understanding of the history, economy, communities and cultures in our home state. My early faculty career …

Perceptions Of Faculty Members In Selected Catholic High Schools Regarding North Central Association School Improvement Models, Karen L. Tichy

Journal of Catholic Education

This article discusses a study which compared faculty members’ perceptions regarding the North Central Association (NCA) evaluation process based on format used (conventional, individualized, or outcomes) and school type (diocesan or private). Data were collected on the independent variables of format, school type, and prior NCA experience. The dependent variables were respondents’ ratings on a seven-point Likert-type scale regarding the mechanics of self-study, faculty ownership, relevance to local and professional concerns, improvement generated, and the results of participation. The author concluded with the following recommendations: (1) more time for conducting the self-study; (2) more clarification of the evaluation process, especially …

The Collegial Environment And The Functional Organization, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Libraries are generally organized by function in order to carry out their mission efficiently. Academic librarians who are faculty also have a collegial organization that exists apart from any functional arrangement. Public and technical services librarians in this sort of organization are colleagues who have responsibility for the library in the way that teaching faculty are responsible for the programs in their departments. This article discusses the characteristics of the successful collegial organization and the relationship of technical and public services librarians in a collegial library.

Diversity, Collaboration, Reflective Practice, And Technology In Professional Education Programs: Strategic Choices For Higher Education, Caren L. Sax Edd Mar 1999

Diversity, Collaboration, Reflective Practice, And Technology In Professional Education Programs: Strategic Choices For Higher Education, Caren L. Sax Edd

Dissertations

Today's postsecondary students are entering American institutions of higher education (IHEs) with different experiences, expectations, and learning needs than students of previous generations. Calls for more diverse campuses, advanced technology, and lifelong learning are maintaining pressure on IHEs to adjust to new demands for a more encompassing vision as traditional approaches are no longer adequate. The challenges are tremendous; the responses must be extensive and reflective if higher education is to achieve its goals of preparing students for productive and meaningful lives. This study investigated student experiences in a yearlong professional education program that was focused by four strategic choices …

Assessment Of A Technical Assistance Model: Serving Youth With Disabilities In Residential Settings In North Dakota., Joan Bonsness

Theses and Dissertations

State education agencies, school districts, and residential corrective and treatment facilities share common concern for the disproportionate number of youth with disabilities placed in out-of-district settings. Central to this concern is the fact that many juveniles with disabilities in residential facilities may not receive the educational services to which they are entitled. The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (DPI) initiated a technical assistance project in an effort to facilitate cooperation between corrective and treatment facilities and school districts in serving these youth. The purpose of this study was to identify if a technical assistance project could facilitate interaction among educators …

Motivating Adult Volunteer 4-H Leaders, Ken Culp Iii, Vicki J. Schwartz

Journal of Extension

The purpose of this study was to determine factors motivating tenured 4-H volunteers to begin and continue volunteer service to 4-H and to identify potential negative motivators influencing them to discontinue their service to 4-H. Data were collected from 279 volunteers at a state-wide recognition banquet via a 4-page, 35-item questionnaire. Motives for beginning and continuing volunteer service to 4-H were similar and focused on an affiliation with either 4-H or 4-H members. Physical inability (or death) and unfulfilled affiliation motives were identified as most likely to cause discontinuation of service.

Caddoan Ceremonial Sites Of The Caddoan Cultural Area Of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, And Texas: Draft Caddo National Landmark Nomination, Mark R. Barnes, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Since 1997, we have been working on the development of a National Historic Landmark (NHL) cover nomination for Caddoan ceremonial sites - earthen mounds in the Caddoan cultural area of southwestern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana, eastern Oklahoma, and northeastern Texas. Such a nomination establishes the historic context within which all similar cultural properties can be evaluated for significance according to the NHL criteria, as it establishes the research and other criteria by which a cultural property may be identified as a significant archeological resource.
