Two consecutive school years, 1997-1998 and 1998-1999, were studied. In the 1997-1998 school year, neither strategy was utilized, while both were implemented in the 1998-1999 school year. Postal Workers And Stress, Bobbie A. Person May 1999

Postal Workers And Stress, Bobbie A. Person

Theses and Dissertations

It is suggested that a plausible theoretical link exists between the management of change and recent killings in the United States Postal Service. The degradation of labor associated with the scientific management of technological change produces stress and frustration that weaken employee integration and undermine existing forms of social control. Certain employees reject prevailing definitions of situations provided by those in power and develop alternative meanings and patterns of behavior, including assaultive violence.

To examine this theory in more depth, 120 Occupational Stress questionnaires and rating sheets were randomly distributed to 30 Mailhandlers and 30 Machine Clerks working the "day" …

A Sociological Exploration Of Schisms In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints: 1830-1985, Krista Lynn Smith

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examined schisms in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1830-1985, concentrating on the relationship of religious organizational development and propensity to schism. It was hypothesized that as a religious group institutionalizes, it experiences crises that increase the likelihood for schism. This study used the LDS Church as a case study to analyze how organizational development correlates with schismatic activity.

It was found that a church is most safe from schismatic movements when the church is organizationally stable, but before major accommodation has taken place. For the LDS Church, this occurred from 1850-1890 when the church …

Habitus Wars And Field(S) Of Dreams: Using Bourdieu To Reframe The Sense Of A Crisis, Louann Hofheins Cummings May 1999

Habitus Wars And Field(S) Of Dreams: Using Bourdieu To Reframe The Sense Of A Crisis, Louann Hofheins Cummings

Student Scholarship

The paper illustrates the application of Pierre Bourdieu's oeuvre to a qualitative research project regarding organizational change. Considerable attention is given to the interaction of field delineation, capital stakes struggle, interests, and individual/class habitus at both a church and a medical college. It is posited that a focus on field analysis considers the sources of capital struggle in a given realm. This, in turn, grants a researcher a new way to analyze who participates in these struggles, what prized capital stimulates interest, and how action and prctices are subsequently engendered. This body of work suggests that agents and/or classes have …

Changing Oil Industry: Will It Affect Oil Prices?, Arlon R. Tussing, Linda Leask

ISER Reports

The petroleum industry is far different today from what it was two decades ago, when oil started flowing from Alaska’s North Slope. An important question in Alaska, where oil has driven economic growth and supported government since the 1970s, is what industry changes might mean for future oil prices. As ISER noted in 1998, Alaska is less vulnerable to low oil prices than it used to be, because the state government has invested much of its oil income to build huge financial reserves and has sharply cut spending. This paper explores a range of questions relating to consolidation of the …
