Zinc Oxide, With Or Without Carbadox, Stimulates Performance In Nursery Pigs, Hsin-Yi Chen, Austin J. Lewis, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

As part of a cooperative research study with several other Midwest universities, two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of high concentrations of zinc from zinc oxide in nursery diets. In the first experiment, the effects of adding various pharmacological concentrations of zinc as zinc oxide were tested. In the second experiment, the effects of both zinc and(or) carbadox additions to diets for weanling pigs were evaluated. Feeding pharmacological concentrations (2,000 to 3,000 mg/kg) of supplemental zinc from zinc oxide stimulated voluntary feed intake and weight gain of nursery pigs, but additive responses to carbadox (55 mg/kg) were not …

Defining Swine Nutrient Requirements And Allowances—What Do The Numbers Mean?, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis, Duane Reese, Mike Brumm Jan 1999

Defining Swine Nutrient Requirements And Allowances—What Do The Numbers Mean?, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis, Duane Reese, Mike Brumm

Nebraska Swine Reports

Defining nutrient requirements or allowances is the first, and conceivably most important step, in developing a nutrition program for growing-finishing pigs. Understanding the terminology and underlying principles used to define nutrient requirements and allowances for pigs will help producers better evaluate their nutrition programs. This information will also enable producers to interface production outputs (e.g., growth rate and carcass data) to published nutrient requirement and allowance programs, such as The National Research Council, Nutrient Requirements of Swine, 1998. As these and other approaches describing nutrient requirements for pigs develop, producers need a better and more complete understanding of growth biology …

The Effects Of Dietary Feather Meal Concentration On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Barrows, Kuo-Wei Ssu, Mike Brumm, Phillip S. Miller, Jill M. Heemstra Jan 1999

The Effects Of Dietary Feather Meal Concentration On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Barrows, Kuo-Wei Ssu, Mike Brumm, Phillip S. Miller, Jill M. Heemstra

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary feather meal level, as well as whether or not start weight influenced feather meal effects in growth performance and carcass traits of barrows. Dietary feather meal additions tended to decrease the final body weight variation of barrows. Barrows fed diets containing 20 percent feather meal from 80 pounds to slaughter had decreased average daily gain, average daily feed intake, digestible lysine intake, energy intake, daily lean gain and backfat depth. Barrows fed diets containing 10 percent feather meal from 190 pounds to slaughter had decreased average daily gain, average daily …

Feedlot Diet Roughage Level For Hereford Cattle Exposed To Excessive Heat Load1, T. L. Mader, J. B. Gaughan, B A. Young

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)

In Exp. 1, six individually fed Hereford steers were exposed to hot (HOT) or thermoneutral (TNL) environmental conditions (ENV) while being adapted (stepped-up) to a finishing diet by decreasing roughage level from 55 to 10% of the diet DM over 17 d. Only at 10% roughage did heat exposure result in reduced (P

The Development Of Elisa Methods For The Measurement Of Oxidized Ldls And Autoantibodies Against Oxidized Ldls In Human Serum, Katherine Ann Garvey Jan 1999

The Development Of Elisa Methods For The Measurement Of Oxidized Ldls And Autoantibodies Against Oxidized Ldls In Human Serum, Katherine Ann Garvey

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

A significant risk factor for the development of heart disease appears to be oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDLs). Currently there are no methods which specifically measure oxidized LDLs in serum. ELISA methods were developed which specifically detect oxLDLs and autoantibodies against oxLDLs in human serum. These sensitive assays can detect oxLDLs in concentrations as small as 50 ng/mL serum. Optimal assay conditions such as serum and antibody dilutions, as well as blocking agents and washing buffers were determined. The assays have successfully detected greater amounts of oxLDLs and autoantibodies in more concentrated serum dilutions. Ultimately these assays may be used to …

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles Jan 1999

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Environmentally sound nitrogen (N) management is necessary to simultaneously achieve high crop yields and protect surface and groundwater quality. We evaluated a hand-held chlorophyll meter as a diagnostic tool for improving management for corn (Zea mays L.). Five N fertilizer rates (0, 67, 134, 201 and 280 kg N ha-1) were evaluated in one study, and in a second study, the meter was used to evaluate the N status of corn plants grown under varying tillage (chisel plow vs no-till), crop rotation (continuous corn vs corn-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]), and N management treatments. Meter readings were …

An Exploratory Study Of Minneapolis Truant Adolescents And School And County Interventions, Lois E. Lewis Jan 1999

An Exploratory Study Of Minneapolis Truant Adolescents And School And County Interventions, Lois E. Lewis

Theses and Graduate Projects

Truancy is one of the most alarming social problems schools and educators face daily. Because of the complex conditions that contribute to truancy, the etiology and development of the problem are unclear. In this study, fifty subjects ages 12-14 were described by using two measures. An intake form was used to abstract information, at the county level, on the variables gender, age, race, grade, education, number of people in the home, living situation, chemical use, mental health, prior court involvement, and other factors pertinent to this study for the 1997-98 school year. The second measure was used, at the school …

In Situ Neutral Detergent Insoluble Nitrogen As A Method For Measuring Forage Protein Degradability, R. Mass, G. P. Lardy, R. J. Grant, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A method of estimating the undegraded intake protein (UIP) concentration of forages was developed and validated with a series of in situ experiments. The hypothesis was that UIP calculated from in situ neutral detergent insoluble N (NDIN) is equal to total in situ N minus the microbial N that is estimated from purines (MN). The in situ disappearance rates of total in situ N (TN), MN, and NDIN were measured for six hay samples and two range masticate samples. Hypothetical rates of passage (2 or 5%/h) were used to calculate UIP (% of DM) for each N pool. Estimates of …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic (coroariances between objective measures and carcass visual scores, as a test of the potential value afvisual scores in selection programmes to improve carcass composition in crossbred lambs. In each of 1986, 1987 and 1988, 22 Suffolk rams were chosen with either high or low scores on an index designed to increase lean growth rate. These rams were joined with 18 to20 crossbred ewes each and theirlambs were grov.J11 on grass to one of three target live weights (35·5, 41·5 and 47·0 kg) for slaughter. The carcasses of 1881 lambs …

A Literature Review Of Parental Involvement In Public Schools From 1994-1999, Barbara Gohl Keene Jan 1999

A Literature Review Of Parental Involvement In Public Schools From 1994-1999, Barbara Gohl Keene

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to see how parental involvement affected student achievement and how educators could involve parents at the middle grades and junior/senior high levels. American families and our society have changed dramatically over the past twenty-five years. These changes have had exciting effects on educational processes in schools. It has become a challenge to involve parents in the educational process, especially during the middle, junior and senior high school years. Parents are far more involved in their children's early childhood education than in their later years of schooling (Pryor, 1995). Involvement drops off dramatically when children …

Literature Review: Challenging Hiv-Related Stigma And Discrimination In Southeast Asia: Past Successes And Future Priorities, Joanna Busza

HIV and AIDS

Pervasive stigma has surrounded HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the pandemic. In Southeast Asia, as elsewhere, it has been accompanied by discrimination, affecting transmission patterns and access to care and support. This paper describes the regional experience of stigma and discrimination and offers a review of community-based interventions that have attempted to reduce them. The evidence presented comes primarily from unpublished literature and anecdotal evidence gained through interviews with project staff throughout the region.

The Politics Of Adoptions Across Borders: Whose Interests Are Served? ( A Look At The Emerging Market Of Infants From China), Michelle Van Leeuwen

Washington International Law Journal

China is currently the leading source of babies for intercountry adoption in the United States. This Comment explores the causes of this phenomenon, and the ability of the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption to serve the interests of both the abandoned and orphaned children, and the adoptive parents under these specific circumstances.
