Street Children: A Comparative Perspective, Kevin Lalor

Articles

Objective: This paper examines the findings from recent studies of street children in Ethiopia. Methods: Following a discussion of the term “street children,” comparisons are drawn between Latin American and Ethiopian street children in terms of gender, age, reasons for going to the streets, family relations and structure, delinquency, drug use, groups and the outcomes of street life. In particular, the victimisation of street children in Ethiopia is examined. Results: Widespread abuse of street children was reported. The Relationships Between Soil Properties And Nutritional Status Of Strawberry Plants Grown In Anamur And Silifke Districts, Ali̇ İnal, Aydin Güneş, Mehmet Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In order to determine the fertility of soil and nutritional status of strawberry plants grown in the districts of Anamur and silifke, 24 soil and 37 plant samples were collected and analysed. According to the results, 33% of Anamur soils showed high salinity. However, almost all the soils from Silifke showed a non-saline character. Organic matter deficiency was detected in 25% and 67% of the soils of Anamur and silifke, respectively. Approximately 10% of soils in Anamur showed nitrogen deficiency. Both of the districts have suffered available P deficiency, but it is more serious in Silifke. In Anamur, K deficiency …

Metaphorically Speaking: Putting Las Vegas On The Cultural Map, Ester Sara O Fearghail Jan 1999

Metaphorically Speaking: Putting Las Vegas On The Cultural Map, Ester Sara O Fearghail

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas has art galleries, an art museum, a Cultural and Community Affairs Division. It also supports the Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada and a southern branch of the Nevada Arts Council. Clearly, art and art advocates are present in Las Vegas. Yet, Las Vegas is traditionally viewed as a town with no culture and, furthermore, as a place that it is incompatible with art; This paper is a study of the relationship people believe Las Vegas has to art. I have used the methodology of Lakoff and Johnson's theory of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson: 1980) to analyze …

Pork Meat And Bone Meal Value Relative To Soybean Meal For Growing Calves, Casey Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Ryan Mass, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 1999

Pork Meat And Bone Meal Value Relative To Soybean Meal For Growing Calves, Casey Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Ryan Mass, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Individually fed steer calves (n=90) were used to evaluate different rendering procedures of pork meat and bone meal on protein quality as compared to soybean meal. Treatment proteins included an urea control, soybean meal, high-ash pork meat and bone meal, pork meat and bone meal control and non-enzymatically browned (NEB) pork meat and bone meal. High-ash meat and bone meal protein efficiency was higher than other treatments. However, the escape values determined by the ammonia release procedure were higher for NEB meat and bone meal, suggesting efficiency should have been improved relative to the control and high-ash meat and bone …

Misconceptions And Misleading Information Prevail - Less Regulation Does Not Mean Less Danger To Consumers: Dangerous Herbal Weight Loss Products, Jennifer Sardina

Journal of Law and Health

This Note will examine the dangers associated with current dietary supplement regulation under the DSHEA and the problem of ill-informed consumers. As reflected in the title of this Note, misconceptions about dietary supplement regulation are abundant; consequently, section II of this Note will further discuss and offer illustrations in support of this position. Part III gives an overview of current regulation under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. Also a brief discussion of the legislation that preceded the DSHEA is offered in section VI. Part V of this Note analyzes and defines the dietary ingredients that are …

Attitude Change Of College Students Toward Older Adults, Heidi L. Funk Jan 1999

Attitude Change Of College Students Toward Older Adults, Heidi L. Funk

Honors Capstones

Attitude change of approximately 200 undergraduate students' attitudes towards the elderly was assessed. To measure attitude change a modified version of the Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale (1961) was administered to college students at the beginning and end of the semester. The three courses varied in content regarding older adults and the aging process. The aging and the family class focused entirely on aging and required contact with an older adult. The human development class focused on the lifespan and included a segment on aging, while the child development class acted as the control group with no course content …

Food For Sport Or Faustian Bargain: Regulating Performance Enhancing Dietary Supplements, Jennifer Kay Braman Jan 1999

Food For Sport Or Faustian Bargain: Regulating Performance Enhancing Dietary Supplements, Jennifer Kay Braman

Cleveland State Law Review

The defining line between legal and illegal substance-between dietary supplement and drug is horribly skewed. Accordingly, Part I of this Note will investigate the complexities that exist with regard to the classification and regulation of dietary supplements, looking at the history leading to the passage of the governing Dietary Health and Supplement Act of 1994. Part II will focus on supplements that consumers may use for performance enhancement purposes, and the regulation of sports products. Part III will look at the regulatory debate over dietary supplements, the andro product example and the interrelationship between drugs and sport. Part IV will …

Health Care Access For Children With Disabilities, Linda C. Fentiman Jan 1999

Health Care Access For Children With Disabilities, Linda C. Fentiman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In the last twenty-five years, we have seen a remarkable evolution in attitudes and practice toward the treatment of children with disabilities. Children born with severe physical and mental anomalies are no longer routinely allowed to die. Many such children, along with those who become disabled later in childhood through illness or injury, receive aggressive life-saving medical treatment as well as continuing medical and habilitative care. Some children, particularly those whose families are affluent, receive substantial therapeutic and other supportive services that permit them to overcome their disabilities and function effectively in school and, later, at work.

Nastygram Federalism: A Look At Federal Self-Audit Policy, David N. Cassuto Jan 1999

Nastygram Federalism: A Look At Federal Self-Audit Policy, David N. Cassuto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines the evolution of EPA's audit policy, explores the reasons for states' dissatisfaction with it, and then discusses whether the federal policy should have been issued as a rule under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Part I examines the evolution of the federal audit policy and then analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the policy in its current form. Part II explores various types of evidentiary privilege and looks at the arguments for and against extending the privilege to audit reports. It then offers a similar analysis of the case for limited immunity, concluding that neither an expanded …

Differential Diagnosis Of Late Onset Psychosis Using Neuropsychological Assessment And Neuroimaging Techniques, Susan Fralick Ball Jan 1999

Differential Diagnosis Of Late Onset Psychosis Using Neuropsychological Assessment And Neuroimaging Techniques, Susan Fralick Ball

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Few references in the literature have been made with respect to the diagnosis of late onset psychosis by the use of behavioral observations coupled with neuropsychological and neuroimaging techniques. This is a report of the case of a 68-year-old woman who experienced a sudden onset of psychotic illness characterized by delusions and confabulation. As part of her neurobehavioral evaluation, a SPECT scan revealed right frontal and left anterior temporal lobe hypoperfusion. Serial neuropsychological evaluations demonstrated decline on tests of executive control (monitoring, allocation of attention, perseveration) and visuospatial abilities, whereas performance in other areas of cognitive functioning remained close to …

The Relationship Between Septic Systems And Incidence Of Giardiasis And Shigellosis In Florida, Sharon Heber Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Septic Systems And Incidence Of Giardiasis And Shigellosis In Florida, Sharon Heber

All ETDs from UAB

A retrospective cohort study was conducted, to assess the relationship between onsite sewage treatment and disposal system (OSTDS) failures and giardiasis and shigellosis. Cases in close proximity to OSTDS were analyzed to ascertain any association with failed systems. It was predicted that the risk of acquiring giardiasis or shigellosis was greater than one when comparing exposure to failed versus functional OSTDS. Records of failed systems, functional systems, and disease cases were mapped using a geographical information system (GIS). Cases and households with cases around failed systems were considered exposed cases, and cases and households with cases around functional systems were …
