Measured Energy Expenditure Of Tube-Fed Patients With Severe Neurodevelopment Disabilities, Roland N. Dickerson, Rex O. Brown, Jane M. Gervasio, Emily B. Hak, Lawrence J. Hak, John E. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Objective: To determine measured resting energy expenditure (REE) of nonambulatory tube-fed patients with severe neurological neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Methods: Twenty patients were prospectively studied. Only steady state indirect calorimetry measurements were taken. All measurements were conducted using a canopy system. Nutritional needs were met entirely by enteral feedings via a permanent ostomy.

Results: REE was widely distributed from 16 kcals/kg/day to 39 kcals/kg/day. The mean REE (888 ±176 kcals/day) of the patients was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than predicted as estimated by the Harris-Benedict equations (1081 ± 155 kcals/day) and World Health Organization equations (1194 ± 167 kcals/day). Fat-free mass (FFM) was the best parameter for predicting REE. Two predictive equations were developed that are not significantly biased and more precise (≤ 15% error) than conventional predictive formulas.

Conclusion: Conventional formulas for estimating energy expenditure are inaccurate and generally overestimate measured energy expenditure of nonambulatory patients with severe developmental …

Enhanced Degradation Of Algal Lipids By Benthic Macrofaunal Activity: Effect Of Yoldia Limatula, Ming-Yi Sun, Robert C. Aller, Cindy Lee, Stuart G. Wakeham Jan 1999

Enhanced Degradation Of Algal Lipids By Benthic Macrofaunal Activity: Effect Of Yoldia Limatula, Ming-Yi Sun, Robert C. Aller, Cindy Lee, Stuart G. Wakeham

Journal of Marine Research

We used the protobranch bivalve, Yoldia limatula, in a series of incubation experiments to test whether activities of deposit-feeding macrofauna cause differences in lipid degradation processes relative to controls lacking macrofauna. Uniformly 13C-labeled algae (13C > 98%) were used as a source of fresh planktonic lipids, easily distinguished from bulk sedimentary lipids by GC/MS. Variations in concentration of major lipid components ([16:1(ω7), 16:0 and 18:1(ω9)] fatty acids and phytol) were followed as a function of time in incubations with and without Yoldia. Results showed that Yoldia can significantly enhance the degradation of planktonic lipids in sediments. …

Enzymatically Hydrolyzable Amino Acids In North Sea Sediments And Their Possible Implication For Sediment Nutritional Values, B. Dauwe, J. J. Middelburg, P. Van Rijswijk, J. Sinke, P. M. J. Herman, C. H. R. Heip Jan 1999

Enzymatically Hydrolyzable Amino Acids In North Sea Sediments And Their Possible Implication For Sediment Nutritional Values, B. Dauwe, J. J. Middelburg, P. Van Rijswijk, J. Sinke, P. M. J. Herman, C. H. R. Heip

Journal of Marine Research

The nutritional value of peptidic material in five North Sea sediments that differ in organic matter quality has been investigated with an enzymatic approach measuring the digestibility (rate constant k of proteolysis by protease) and the proportion of bioavailable fraction of amino acids (%EHAA-i:THAA). The bioavailable fraction in sediments varied between 14-50% EHAA-i:THAA and was generally lower than in potential source organisms such as algae (40-43%), plankton (~80%) and bacteria (57-72%). The rate of proteolysis of the amino acids varied among stations (k = 0.3-3.1 h-1) with a systematic decrease when going from labile to more refractory …

Computers And The Discovery Of Evidence - A New Dimension To Civil Procedure, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 411 (1999), Mark D. Robins

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Attorneys are largely unaware of the types of evidence available through computer related sources. Lawyers and courts face similar obstacles in exploring the electronic frontier. The legal community is confronting the dispute between a liberal policy of open access to relevant information and the burdens of computer-related discovery of sensitive, confidential and privileged material. Computers are used to generate, process and store vast amounts of useful information-related evidence. Computers also create discovery hazards when they store damaging information, trade secrets and other proprietary or confidential data. Another discovery problem arises because of the lack of uniformity of spoliation laws over …

Aboveground Production And Nutrient Circulation Along A Flooding Gradient In A South Carolina Coastal Plain Forest, William Conner, Marianne K. Burke, B Graeme Lockaby Jan 1999

Aboveground Production And Nutrient Circulation Along A Flooding Gradient In A South Carolina Coastal Plain Forest, William Conner, Marianne K. Burke, B Graeme Lockaby

Publications

Relative to effects of flooding, little is known about the influence of hydrology-nutrient interactions on aboveground net primary production (NPP) in forested wetlands. The authors found that nutrient circulation and NPP were closely related along a complex physical, chemical, and hydrologic gradient in a bottomland hardwood forest with four distinct communities. Aboveground biomass, NPP, biomass partitioning to stem production, growth efficiency, and soil macronutrient availability were greatest in the flooded zone, possibly because of the stable hydrologic regime. In the wet transition zone, trees were least productive, nutrient use efficiency was highest, and N retranslocation from foliage before abscission was …

Management Of Droughty Site: Typic Quartzipsamments, Ecological Considerations, David Kulhavy, W. G. Ross, L. Allen Smith, R. R. Cahal

Faculty Publications

Pine plantations on Typic Quartzipsamments in East Texas are difficult to establish. Forest management options following clearcutting are limited. A 12 year regeneration study of the growth and survival of loblolly, Pinus faeda, L. shortleaf, P. echinata Mill., slash, f. elliofii Engelm and longleaf pines P. pa/u&is Mill. was conducted to determine optimum tree species and treatments for reforestation. With successful regeneration also comes insects and pathogens. Impacts of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frusfrana, (Comstock) and the Texas leaf-cutting ant, Affa texana, (Buckley) will be discussed in the context of droughty site management.

Plant And Breeding Bird Communities Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Southwest Kansas And Southeast Colorado, Stephen L. Winter

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research was initiated to determine if plant and bird communities on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus Ord) colonies in southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado differed from those found on associated non-colonized areas. Vegetation height and density, and the cover and frequency of numerous plant species differed between prairie dog colonies and non-colonized areas that were co-dominated by mid-height grasses and shortgrasses. A comparison of prairie dog colonies with non-colonized areas that were dominated solely by shortgrasses did not reveal a difference in vegetation height and density. The number of species that differed in cover or frequency between prairie dog …

Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange And Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Spectroscopy Of Bacteria In A Complex Food Matrix, Gregory P. Harhay, Gregory R. Siragusa Jan 1999

Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange And Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Spectroscopy Of Bacteria In A Complex Food Matrix, Gregory P. Harhay, Gregory R. Siragusa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The rapid identification and quantification of pathogenic foodborne bacteria is a national research priority. Data collected with a new spectrochemical method suggests that resonance Raman spectroscopy can rapidly and selectively identify and quantify bacteria in foods and other complex biomatrices. This method utilizes hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDE) to resolve the spectral fingerprints of individual components in the overlapped regions of the ultraviolet resonance Raman spectra of heterogeneous samples. We illustrate this concept with HDE-induced changes in the spectra of bacteria and beef carcass wash samples. The data presented here suggest that the combination of ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy and HDE can …

Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva Jan 1999

Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically characterized by progressive mental decline. The pathomorphology of AD includes the accumulation of abnormal filaments, known as neurofibrillary tangles or NFT, within the nerve cells and of extracellular deposits of amyloid fibers surrounded by dystrophic neurites that form senile plaques. Many inflammatory proteins have been found in association with lesions in AD brain, but the role of the inflammatory reactions in AD pathogenesis is not known. The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between the inflammatory and neuropathological changes in AD brain through examining the density of lesions immunoreactive for inflammatory proteins …
