Effect Of Disorder On The Magnetic Properties Of Smco5, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, R.L. Schalek Jan 1999

Effect Of Disorder On The Magnetic Properties Of Smco5, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, R.L. Schalek

Diandra Leslie-Pelecky Publications

Mechanical milling of initially ordered ferromagnetic SmCo5 produces dramatic increases in coercivity after short (15 min to 1 h) milling times, accompanied by remanence ratios on the order of 0.7 and shifted hysteresis loops. X-ray diffraction shows that milling induces both chemical and structural disorder. The hysteresis-loop shift is continuous and nonlinear with temperature over the range 5–300 K. The high coercivities are attributed to the formation of a nanostructure consisting of crystalline SmCo5 regions separated by a disordered interphase.

Hands-On Computer Use In Science Classrooms: The Skeptics Are Still Waiting, Alan Runge, Amy N. Spiegel, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig, Steven Dunbar, Robert Fuller, Glenn Sowell, David W. Brooks

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Frank Collea was a friend of Robert Fuller and David Brooks, and a mentor to Brooks. We miss him for his energy, his enthusiasm for teaching science, and his perception about how to improve science education. Frank Collea was not a big fan of using computers in instruction. Frank was neither an advocate of using computers to deliver instruction, nor an advocate of teaching their use as professional tools. Indeed, he thought that most of those of us who advocate computer use make assertions that are unwarranted. A decade ago, desktop computers were beginning to appear in colleges and universities …

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki Jan 1999

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.

Charting The Book Of Mormon: Visual Aids For Personal Study And Teaching, John W. Welch, J. Gregory Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

This book is a collection of more than 175 visual aids that promote deeper understanding and appreciation of the Book of Mormon. Designed for multiple use as study guides, handouts, and masters for creating projectable images, the charts convey a wealth of information that will enrich personal study and teaching.

Arranged in 15 sections, these charts consist of tables, diagrams, chronologies, flowcharts, bar graphs, pie charts, maps, and other effective schematics that represent Book of Mormon data in new and thought-provoking ways. General topics range from the history, doctrine, structure, and chronology of the Book of Mormon to its literary, …

Why Clustering In Function Approximation? Theoretical Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Yeung Yam Jan 1999

Why Clustering In Function Approximation? Theoretical Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Function approximation is a very important practical problem: in many practical applications, we know the exact form of the functional dependence y=f(x1,...,xn) between physical quantities, but this exact dependence is complicated, so we need a lot of computer space to store it, and a lot of time to process it, i.e., to predict y from the given xi. It is therefore necessary to find a simpler approximate expression g(x1,...,xn) for this same dependence. This problem has been analyzed in numerical mathematics for several centuries, and it is, therefore, one of the most thoroughly analyzed problems of applied mathematics. There are …

Why Fundamental Physical Equations Are Of Second Order?, Takeshi Yamakawa, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 1999

Why Fundamental Physical Equations Are Of Second Order?, Takeshi Yamakawa, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we use a deep mathematical result (namely, a minor modification of Kolmogorov's solution to Hilbert's 13th problem) to explain why fundamental physical equations are of second order. This same result explain why all these fundamental equations naturally lead to non-smooth solutions like singularity.
