Technical Efficiency In Stochastic Production Frontier: A Simultaneous Equation Approach, Kalyan Chakraborty, Basudeb Biswas, W. Cris Lewis Jan 1999

Technical Efficiency In Stochastic Production Frontier: A Simultaneous Equation Approach, Kalyan Chakraborty, Basudeb Biswas, W. Cris Lewis

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper uses both the stochastic and nonstochastic production function approach to measure technical efficiency in public education in Utah. The stochastic specification estimates technical efficiency assuming half normal and exponential distributions. The nonstochastic specification uses two-stage DEA to separate the effects of fixed inputs on the measure of technical efficiency. The empirical analysis shows substantial variation in efficiency among school districts. While these measures are insensitive to the specific distributional assumptions about the one-sided component of the error term in the stochastic specification, they are sensitive to the treatment of fixed socioeconomic inputs in the two-stage DEA.

Evolution Of The Electronic Structure And Properties Of Neutral And Charged Aluminum Clusters: A Comprehensive Analysis, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 1999

Evolution Of The Electronic Structure And Properties Of Neutral And Charged Aluminum Clusters: A Comprehensive Analysis, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

Density-functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation potential has been used to calculate the global equilibrium geometries and electronic structure of neutral, cationic, and anionic aluminumclusters containing up to 15 atoms. The total energies of these clusters are then used to study the evolution of their binding energy, relative stability, fragmentation channels, ionization potential, and vertical and adiabatic electron affinities as a function of size. The geometries are found to undergo a structural change from two dimensional to three dimensional when the cluster contains 6 atoms. An interior atom emerges only when clusters contain 11 or more atoms. …

Morphology, Ultrastructure, And Function Of Extrafloral Nectaries In Three Species Of Caesalpiniaceae, Lenore T. Durkee, Matthew H. Haber, Lisa Dorn, Ann Remington

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Light and electron microscopy reveal that the morphologically well-differentiated petiolar nectaries of Chamaecrista fasciculata, Senna hepecarpa, and S. marilandica have an unusually simple anatomy consisting of an epidermis immediately subtended by a mass of small, loosely-packed parenchyma cells. Vascular strands from the petiolar bundles enter the nectary and terminate as phloem within or near this parenchyma. In mature, secreting nectaries, the cuticle of the epidermis extends between the epidermal cells and into the nectary parenchyma, where it occupies, but does not occlude, much of the free space of this tissue. The cutin is not found below the level …

The Non-Local Universe: The New Physics And Matters Of The Mind, Robert Nadeau, Menas Kafatos Jan 1999

The Non-Local Universe: The New Physics And Matters Of The Mind, Robert Nadeau, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Classical physics states that physical reality is local, or that a measurement at one point in space cannot cannot influence what occurs at another beyond a fairly short distance. Until recently this seemed like an immutable truth in nature. However, in 1997 experiments were conducted in which light particles (photons) originated under certain conditions and traveled in opposite directions to detectors located about seven miles apart. The amazing results indicated that the photons "interacted" or "communicated" with one another instantly or "in no time," leading to the revelation that physical reality is non-local--a discovery that Robert Nadeau and Menas Kafatos …

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach Jan 1999

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

The early church was unable to continue once the apostles had departed. Bishops were only local officials and could not speak for the entire church. Beginning with the later second century, philosophy plays an increasingly important role in the church—this appears to be an effect rather than a cause of the apostasy.

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay Jan 1999

Fundamentals Of Linear State Space Systems, John Bay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Scholarship

This book addresses two primary deficiencies in the linear systems textbook market: a lack of development of state space methods from the basic principles and a lack of pedagogical focus. The book uses the geometric intuition provided by vector space analysis to develop in a very sequential manner all the essential topics in linear state system theory that a senior or beginning graduate student should know. It does this in an ordered, readable manner, with examples drawn from several areas of engineering. Because it derives state space methods from linear algebra and vector spaces and ties all the topics together …

Breeding And Genetics 5: Survival Analysis/Threshold Models, Applications In Survival Analysis, Stephen D. Kachman Jan 1999

Breeding And Genetics 5: Survival Analysis/Threshold Models, Applications In Survival Analysis, Stephen D. Kachman

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Survival or failure time traits such as herd life and days open are both important economically and pose a number of challenges to an analysis based on linear mixed models. The main features of a survival trait are that it is the time until some event occurs, and some of the observations are censored. Survival models and the associated estimation procedures provide a flexible means of modeling survival traits. In this paper I will discuss the application of survival analysis based on the Weibull distribution. The components that make up a survival model will be presented along with their interpretation. …

Mechanical Properties Of Dendritic Pd-Cu-Ga Dental Alloys, Efstratios Papazoglou, Qiang Wu, William A. Brantley, John C. Mitchell, Glyn Meyrick Jan 1999

Mechanical Properties Of Dendritic Pd-Cu-Ga Dental Alloys, Efstratios Papazoglou, Qiang Wu, William A. Brantley, John C. Mitchell, Glyn Meyrick

Cells and Materials

Three Pd-Cu-Ga dental alloys with very similar nominal compositions and dendritic as-cast microstructures were selected for study: Option (Ney Dental) and Spartan (Williams/lvoclar) contain a small amount of boron, while Spartan Plus (Williams/Ivoclar) is boron-free. Bars of each alloy were tested in tension for the as-cast and simulated porcelain-firing conditions, and values of mechanical properties were measured. Fracture surfaces and microstructures of axially sectioned and etched fracture specimens were observed with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Except for the elastic modulus, significant differences were typically found in alloy properties. Heat treatment eliminated the dendritic microstructure, decreased strength and increased ductility. …

Structure And Stability Of The Alx And Alx- Species, Gennady L. Gutsev, Puru Jena, Rodney J. Bartlett Jan 1999

Structure And Stability Of The Alx And Alx- Species, Gennady L. Gutsev, Puru Jena, Rodney J. Bartlett

Physics Publications

The electronic and geometrical structures of the ground and low-lying excited states of the diatomic AlX and AlX− series (X=H, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, and F) are calculated by the coupled-cluster method with all singles and doubles and noniterative inclusion of triples using a large atomic natural orbital basis. All the ground-state AlX molecules except for AlF can attach an additional electron and form ground-state AlX− anions. The ground-state AlBe−, AlB−, AlC−, AlN−, and AlO− anions possess excited states that are stable toward autodetachment of an extra electron; AlBe− also has a second excited state. Low-lying excited states …

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Exploiting our experience developing the WebFlow system, we designed the Gateway system to provide seamless and secure access to computational resources at ASC MSRC. The Gateway follows our commodity components strategy, and it is implemented as a modern three-tier system. Tier 1 is a high-level front-end for visual programming, steering, run-time data analysis and visualization, built on top of the Web and OO commodity standards. Distributed object-based, scalable, and reusable Web server and Object broker middleware forms Tier 2. Back-end services comprise Tier 3. In particular, access to high performance computational resources is provided by implementing the emerging standard for …
