Credit Access, Human Capital And Class Structure Mobility, Bruce Wydick Jan 1999

Credit Access, Human Capital And Class Structure Mobility, Bruce Wydick

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper examines the impact of microenterprise credit programs on class structure mobility in developing countries. The paper develops a model that endogenously generates an eight-fold class structure. Class membership is determined by optimal choice of labour activity, which is a function of access to credit and human capital endowments. Predictions from the model suggest that better access to credit will foster upward class mobility among self-employed entrepreneurs, and that this upward class mobility will be accentuated among entrepreneurs with high levels of human capital. Theoretical predictions from the model are compared with data on class structure mobility collected firsthand …

The Use Of Computer Animations In Teaching Science, Mo Aljaroudi Jan 1999

The Use Of Computer Animations In Teaching Science, Mo Aljaroudi

Graduate Research Papers

The primary purpose of this research paper is to investigate the effectiveness of computer animations in chemistry teaching. This is done by first defining what computer animation is and giving an historical background of its development, and then by describing levels of chemistry understanding, general and cognitive functions of animations, and exploring aspects that make animations and their applications effective in the context of chemistry teaching. Also, the paper describes how computer animations increase and enhance conceptual understanding, long-term retention, achievement, and attitudes toward subject matter. Implications are given for instructors to more effectively incorporate computer animations into their instructional …

On The Extinction Of Species In Jointly Determined Stochastic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi Jan 1999

On The Extinction Of Species In Jointly Determined Stochastic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The sizeable literature on extinction in economics has paid scant attention to the problem of constructing measures of species extinction. Moreover, this literature has not studied the question of species extinction in stochastic systems that are jointly determined. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to use probability theory to construct a measure of species extinction in jointly determined ecological-economic systems.

Effects Of Spacecraft Potential On Secondary Electron Yields In Geosynchronous Orbit, Neal E. Nickles Jan 1999

Effects Of Spacecraft Potential On Secondary Electron Yields In Geosynchronous Orbit, Neal E. Nickles

All Physics Faculty Publications

Surface charging due to interactions with the earth=s plasma is a hazard for orbiting spacecraft. Secondary electron (SE) emission is an important physical process in spacecraft charging. Current spacecraft charging models do not consider the SE energy or angular distributions and their implications for estimating the return of SE to the spacecraft. Comprehensive work on the application of SE energy and angular distributions to spacecraft charging has been published [Nickles et al., 1999] and part of that work is summarized here. The application of SE energy distributions to the case of positive charging in geosynchronous orbit is discussed and shown …

Collaborative Strategies For Teachers And Parents In Achieving Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements In Reading And Language, Theresa Laffey

All Graduate Projects

A teacher handbook containing suggestions and activities teachers can recommend to parents to assist their children in achieving the State Essential Learning Requirements for Kindergarten was developed. Activities and suggestions were based on 25 Expectations set by the State within the Essential Learning Requirements at the Kindergarten level. Each suggestion or activity was supported by research and directly linked to a specific Expectation. The suggestions and activities were selected based upon parent/ child interest, materials required to implement and ease for parents to follow instructions.

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson Jan 1999

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson

All Graduate Projects

Relatively little research was encountered which attempted to measure the effectiveness of an integrated curriculum over a more traditional course of studies. The results that were articulated seemed to indicate that students in classrooms using an integrated curriculum approach did as well or better than students experiencing a more traditional approach. This was especially true in the area of conceptual understanding. The purpose of this project was to design and develop a model program that integrated Language Arts, Social Studies and the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements for the seventh grade students at Manson Secondary School.

Functional Evolution Of Free Quantum Fields, Charles G. Torre, Madhavan Varadarajan Jan 1999

Functional Evolution Of Free Quantum Fields, Charles G. Torre, Madhavan Varadarajan

All Physics Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of evolving a quantum field between any two (in general, curved) Cauchy surfaces. Classically, this dynamical evolution is represented by a canonical transformation on the phase space for the field theory. We show that this canonical transformation cannot, in general, be unitarily implemented on the Fock space for free quantum fields on flat spacetimes of dimension greater than 2. We do this by considering time evolution of a free Klein-Gordon field on a flat spacetime (with toroidal Cauchy surfaces) starting from a flat initial surface and ending on a generic final surface. The associated Bogolubov transformation …

Formal Analysis Of A Secure Communication Channel: Secure Core-Email Protocol, Dan Zhou, Shiu-Kai Chin Jan 1999

Formal Analysis Of A Secure Communication Channel: Secure Core-Email Protocol, Dan Zhou, Shiu-Kai Chin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

To construct a highly-assured implementation of secure communication channels we must have clear definitions of the security services, the channels, and under what assumptions these channels provide the desired services. We formally define secure channel services and develop a detailed example. The example is a core protocol common to a family of secure email systems. We identify the necessary properties of cryptographic algorithms to ensure that the email protocol is secure, and we verify that the email protocol provides secure services under these assumptions. We carry out the definitions and verifications in higher-order logic using the HOL theorem-prover. All our …

Performance Analysis Of Csma And Btma Protocols In Multihop Networks: Part Ii - Multiple Channel Case, Lin Wu, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 1999

Performance Analysis Of Csma And Btma Protocols In Multihop Networks: Part Ii - Multiple Channel Case, Lin Wu, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Busy tone multiple access protocols have been used in multihop networks to reduce the effect of the hidden terminal problem. This paper demonstrates another approach to reduce the effect of the hidden terminal problem namely the use of multiple channel schemes. A protocol that uses both the busy tone and the multiple channel techniques achieves the best performance. Using a Markov chain model and an approximation, the throughput performance of the multiple channel nonpersistent CSMA protocol and the multiple channel conservative BTMA protocol in a large network is evaluated and compared. The results show that the multichannel CSMA and BTMA …

Burnett Description For Plane Poiseuille Flow, Alejandro Garcia, F. Uribe Jan 1999

Burnett Description For Plane Poiseuille Flow, Alejandro Garcia, F. Uribe

Faculty Publications

Two recent works have shown that at small Knudsen number ~K! the pressure and temperature profiles in plane Poiseuille flow exhibit a different qualitative behavior from the profiles obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Tij and Santos [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 1399 (1994)] used the Bhatnagar-Gross-Kook model to show that the temperature profile is bimodal and the pressure profile is nonconstant. Malek-Mansour, Baras, and Garcia [Physica A 240, 255 (1997)] qualitatively confirmed these predictions in computer experiments using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). In this paper we compare the DSMC measurements of hydrodynamic variables and non-equilibrium fluxes with numerical …

Spatial And Temporal Factors In Estimating The Potential Of Ride-Sharing For Demand Reduction, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Da-Jie Lin Jan 1999

Spatial And Temporal Factors In Estimating The Potential Of Ride-Sharing For Demand Reduction, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Da-Jie Lin

Faculty Publications

Traffic congestion has been a pervasive problem in many urban areas of this country. This paper studies the potential of carpooling among unrelated partners (i.e., inter-household carpooling) for demand reduction during peak commute hours. Basic questions about this potential include the following. Can the current population density, origin-destination distribution, tolerable pick-up and drop-off delays, departure time distribution, and the tolerance for deviation from preferred departure time support a sizable carpooling population that can make a significant contribution to traffic demand reduction? Could the proportion of long trips that are likely candidates for carpooling (e.g., those long trips with same O-D) …

A Sheaf Theoretic Approach To Consciousness, Goro Kato, Daniele C. Struppa Jan 1999

A Sheaf Theoretic Approach To Consciousness, Goro Kato, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics

A new fundamental mathematical model of consciousness based on category theory is presented. The model is based on two philosophical-theological assumptions: a) the universe is a sea of consciousness, and b) time is multi-dimensional and non-linear.

The Rush To Reunification: Are We Moving Too Quickly?, Robert Nelson Renner

Theses Digitization Project

Child welfare policies in the United States emerge from the premise that children have the right to grow and develop into responsible, productive adult citizens. These policies are designed to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and endangerment, and to help insure that their basic human needs are met.
