Strength And Weaknesses Of Npv Analysis And Its Application To Aircraft Value Modeling, Sebastian Lourier

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Net Present Value (NPV) technique as a mean to forecast aircraft values and the analysis of aircraft value forecasting accuracy. The main part of the examination is the evaluation of the actual quality of aircraft appraisals. The appraisal evaluation is based on historical forecast accuracy determinations and on a comparison of 1998 aircraft value forecasts. The discussion of a survey conducted by the author in 1998, will reveal the disunity among the appraisers. The survey data was provided generously by the appraisers most recognized in the industry. A sensitivity analysis exhibits …

Black Holes And Five-Brane Thermodynamics, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian Aug 1999

Black Holes And Five-Brane Thermodynamics, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The phase diagram for Dp-branes in M theory compactified on T4,T4/Z2,T5, and T6 is constructed. As for the lower-dimensional tori considered in our previous work [E. Martinec and V. Sahakian, Phys. Rev. D 59, 124005 (1999)], the black brane phase at high entropy connects onto matrix theory at low entropy; we thus recover all known instances of matrix theory as consequences of the Maldacena conjecture. The difficulties that arise for T6 are reviewed. We also analyze the D1-D5 system on T5; we discuss its relation to matrix models …

Attitudes Toward Diversity: Determining Differences By Social Locators, Stacey Sympson Aug 1999

Attitudes Toward Diversity: Determining Differences By Social Locators, Stacey Sympson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Diversity training in workplaces is occurring across the U.S. at a growing rate. These programs attempt to make work environments more pluralistic for everyone. Conflict and feminist theory both agree that those with less power will see issues in a different way than will those with more power. This research involved a questionnaire administered to employees at a governmental agency in a small city in the Southeastern United States. Indices were used to measure attitudes toward diversity and sexual orientation. T-tests and multiple regressions were employed to determine the differences in employees' attitudes toward the two dependent variables. Results from …

Dust Emission From Herbig Ae/Be Stars: Evidence For Disks And Envelopes, Anatoly Miroshnichenko, Željko Ivezić, Dejan Vinković, Moshe Elitzur Aug 1999

Dust Emission From Herbig Ae/Be Stars: Evidence For Disks And Envelopes, Anatoly Miroshnichenko, Željko Ivezić, Dejan Vinković, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Infrared and millimeter-wave emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars has produced conflicting conclusions regarding the dust geometry in these objects. We show that the compact dimensions of the millimeter-wave-emitting regions are a decisive indication for disks. But a disk cannot explain the spectral energy distribution unless it is embedded in an extended envelope that (1) dominates the IR emission and (2) provides additional disk heating on top of the direct stellar radiation. Detailed radiative transfer calculations based on the simplest model for envelope-embedded disks successfully fit the data from UV to millimeter wavelengths and show that the disks have central holes. …

The Effects Of Supplemental Protein On Urea Nitrogen Excretion In Women 40-70 Years Old, Tammy D. Moran

Masters Theses

The problem of this study was to determine the effect of supplemental liquid protein in women 40-70 years of age over a 4-week period. Weeks 1 and 3 served as the control period. During this time, no particular diet regime was required, but protein drinks were prohibited. The treatment condition occurred during Weeks 2 and 4. During this time, subjects consumed two protein drinks each day for a period of 7 days. Twenty-four hour urine collections occurred at the end of each week. Urine was analyzed for the presence of urea nitrogen. The dependent variables were urinary urea nitrogen, self-perceived …

Behavior-Based Safety And Working Alone: The Effects Of Self-Monitoring On The Safe Performance Of Bus Operators, Ryan Olson Aug 1999

Behavior-Based Safety And Working Alone: The Effects Of Self-Monitoring On The Safe Performance Of Bus Operators, Ryan Olson

Masters Theses

Experimental evaluations of Behavior-based Safety (BBS) processes applied with lone workers are scarce. Further research is needed to determine the power of self-monitoring based interventions for improving safe behavior, and to explore the best practices for improving safety when employees work alone. In the current study,· four male bus operators (ages 40-50) self-monitored their safe performance and initialed feedback graphs based on their self-monitoring data at the end of each day. Experimental data collectors observed each participant by riding buses as passengers. A multiple baseline design across performances was used to assess the effects of the intervention on four target …

A Policy Analysis Of Teen Courts: A Look At Teen Courts As A Viable Alternative To The Juvenile Court System, Jon P. Mathieu Aug 1999

A Policy Analysis Of Teen Courts: A Look At Teen Courts As A Viable Alternative To The Juvenile Court System, Jon P. Mathieu

Masters Theses

Teen Courts are rapidly emerging as one possible solution to the escalating juvenile crime problem in the United States. From the initial court, started over 20 years ago in Texas, Teen Courts are now in 30 states, with over 250 programs. As the crime problem grows within this population, a need for alternative methods to the Juvenile Court has emerged. Moreover, to date, no formal evaluation has been conducted between United States Teen Courts for a comparative study. Therefore, I sought to explore the following issues: (a) the need for Teen Court implementation, (b) a rationale for Teen Court existence, …

Conform- A Computerized Job-Built Concrete Construction Formwork Design, Kajpong Pongponrat Aug 1999

Conform- A Computerized Job-Built Concrete Construction Formwork Design, Kajpong Pongponrat

Masters Theses

Economy in formwork design depends partly on the ingenuity and experiences of the form designer, whether a contractor or an engineer. The cost of formwork is significant, generally amounting to anywhere from 40% to 60% of the cost of a concrete structure. Judgment with respect to the development of a forming system could both expedite a project and reduce costs. The present paper addresses the development of CONFORM - an interactive menu driven PC based job-built concrete formwork design. The system is developed using Microsoft Visual Basic 6, Access 97 database, and Word 97, where a perfect integration of these …

Modularity In Technology, Organization, And Society, Richard N. Langlois Aug 1999

Modularity In Technology, Organization, And Society, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

Modularity is a very general set of principles for managing complexity. By breaking up a complex system into discrete modules - which can then communicate with one another only through standardized interfaces within a standardized architecture - one can eliminate what would otherwise be an unmanageable spaghetti tangle of systemic interconnections. Such ideas are not new in the literature of technological design (Simon 1962, Alexander 1964), even if, as some claim (Baldwin and Clark 1997), modularity is becoming more important today because of the increased complexity of modern technology. What is new is the application of the idea of modularity …

Through-Wafer Interrogation Of Mems Device Motion, Jeremy Michael Dawson Aug 1999

Through-Wafer Interrogation Of Mems Device Motion, Jeremy Michael Dawson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have been the focus of many research groups because of their wide variety of uses in sensing and actuation applications. A fundamental barrier facing designers of next generation MEMS is the inability to access accurate, real-time microstructure positional information to determine if the device is performing as expected. Previously explored optical and electrical methods of MEMS device monitoring are often only suitable for research environments, or are unable to produce clear and meaningful characterization of device motion. The most desirable MEMS monitoring method would be one that could be implemented at the device level, which would allow …

Forecasting Of Work In Process Quality Using Holt-Winters Method For Missing Observations, Sarang Ram Kayande Aug 1999

Forecasting Of Work In Process Quality Using Holt-Winters Method For Missing Observations, Sarang Ram Kayande

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the pace of technological change is so great, and since new products and processes may be key to a company's future plans, an increasing number of companies are emphasizing regular and complete technological forecasts affecting their industry. Those companies which have gone far in developing planning premises from their technological forecasts have tended to be high-technology enterprises. What has been done in these instances is to encourage members of their technical staffs to be alert to future developments; to think in terms of the impact of current scientific developments on the future state of technology; and to develop orderly …

Perceptions Of Students And Teachers Regarding Agriculture In Leflore County, Mississippi, Ronald L. Howard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of public high school teachers and students in Leflore County, Mississippi regarding agriculture and provide baseline data regarding the perception of high school students and teachers residing in an agriculturally dependent county with no agricultural education program. A population of 240 high school teachers and students was surveyed for their perceptions regarding agriculture. All three public high schools in Leflore County were represented in this study. Over 65% of the sample resided in the city, while only 3% live on a farm. The major finding of this study was that …

Occurrence, Etiology And Management Of Ringwomb In Ewes, Nancy Jean Kerr Aug 1999

Occurrence, Etiology And Management Of Ringwomb In Ewes, Nancy Jean Kerr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pedigrees of ewes with Ringwomb were studied to determine the etiology, incidence and treatment of Ringwomb. Purebred Suffolk and crossbred Hampshire and Shropshire ewes aged from one to seven years were observed over a period of five lambing seasons. The study was conducted on 24 clinical cases of ringwomb occurring in one flock. Ringwomb or incomplete cervical dilation accounted for an incidence of 20.5% (24/117) of all ewes lambing. The ewes affected were all daughters, granddaughters, or great-granddaughters of one particular sire used on the farm as a service sire. Because ringwomb does not typically affect ewes in two consecutive …

Compressive Strength Prediction For Composite Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Edward Albert Wen Aug 1999

Compressive Strength Prediction For Composite Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Edward Albert Wen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A rational methodology is presented to predict the compressive strength of carbon/epoxy compression specimens and prototype production parts using the model presented by Barbero in the Journal of Composite Materials, Vol. 32, No.5/1998. The experimental technique is an adaptation of the optical method first proposed by Yurgartis (1987) and can be directly applied to actual development, quality control or failure investigation programs. There is very good agreement between actual and predicted compressive strength at -125F and room temperature. At 180F, the predicted strength is conservative. Aurora Flight Sciences provided the prototype production parts and partial funding under the "Material Characterization …

Effect Of Allopurinol And Hemin On Some Biological Markers Of Aging In Broiler Chickens, Dinesh Singh Rathore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Uric acid has been hypothesized as one of the most important antioxidants in limiting the accumulation of advanced glycolated endproducts in broiler breeder hens. This study was designed to quantitatively manipulate the plasma uric acid concentrations using hemin and allopurinol and determine its effect on skin pentosidine, shear force value of Pectoralis major muscle, plasma glucose, body and breast weight, and chemiluminescence induced oxidative stress in broiler chickens. Allopurinol decreased plasma uric acid, ranging from 26% to 74%, with the most pronounced effect at wk 22. Hemin increased plasma uric acid concentrations between 11 and 14%. Skin pentosidine levels increased …

Various Pushing Methods On Grid Graphs, Jiaxin Wang Aug 1999

Various Pushing Methods On Grid Graphs, Jiaxin Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis describes algorithms for determining if a grid of switches can be turned into all-off state from any initial configuration by various methods of activation operation (push). Among these push methods, besides the regular "+" push, "+" push with no center, "X" push, "X" push with no center, and a "V"-typed unbalanced push are studied. The research methods used in this work are mainly linear algebra and algorithm analysis. Results obtained include that the grid m x n is completely solvable with push "+" no center, if and only if co-prime (m+1, n+1).
