Theses
This work presents three contributions to the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID): a maintenance-linked flight dataset forpredictivemaintenanceresearch, anaviationchartprocessingservice, and an interactive geospatial heat map for post-flight event analysis. The first contribution is a maintenance-linked flight dataset for predic- tive maintenance and prognostics research in general aviation. The dataset contains approximately 100,000 non-simulated maintenance work orders and more than a million multivariate flight recordings extracted from NGAFID. Eachflightisassociatedwithmaintenancerecordsandlabeledaspre-maintenance, day-of-maintenance, or post-maintenance. Flights are exported as one-hertz sensor time series with flight-phase annotations, while a clustering pipeline groups technician-written maintenance records into event categories. Mesopotamian Journal of Big Data
Recently, Dynamic Graph Neural Networks (DGNNs) have become a potent candidate to model time-changing graphs, although other solutions, including Temporal Graph Networks (TGN), Evolving Graph Convolutional Networks (EvolveGCN), and Dynamic Self-Attention Networks (DySAT), still have significant barriers to scalability, computational efficiency, and temporal embedding drift. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper presents a Topology-Aware Graph Neural Network (TAGNN) model capable of incorporating graph-topology encoding and the spatiotemporal memory mechanisms into the learning process of dynamic node representation. The proposed framework includes three key components: (i) returns global and local structural data such as graph Laplacian-based feature transformations and position encodings, …

What Can Deleuzians And “Third World” Radical Social Movements Learn From Each Other? Reflections On Alex Taek-Gwang Lee’S Communism After Deleuze, Karlo Mikhail I. Mongaya
Kritika Kultura
This review essay reflects on what Deleuzians and “Third World” radical movements can learn from each other from a reading of Alex Taek-Gwang Lee’s Communism After Deleuze (2025). The book reframes Gilles Deleuze’s political philosophy as molded not only by the upheavals of the 1960s but also as a critique of Marxist orthodoxy and an engagement with the liberation struggles of the Third World. Lee challenges the perception of Deleuze as either apolitical or postmodern, while stressing the potential of Deleuze’s concepts to illuminate the dynamics of contemporary capitalism, state power, social movements, and revolutionary becoming. Following in the vein …

Non-Violent Re-Articulation Of Masculinities: Art, Youths, And Peace Preservation In Post-Conflict Ambon Island, Wening Udasmoro, Leo Marai, Russell Soaba, Philip Aratiso, Jemmy Talakua
Kritika Kultura
Art as a mechanism for fostering peace in conflict resolution and peace maintenance can be found in different social experiences. The Ambon conflict that occurred in 1999 following the fall of Indonesia’s New Order government ended in 2002, but the potential for inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflicts is still a concern for many members of the Ambon community in Maluku Province. In an effort to maintain peace, various elements of the Ambon society continuously engage themselves in various activities to preserve peace. One consistent element in these peace preservation efforts is the youth of Ambon, who employ art as a means …
Between Spectacle And Struggle: Representations Of The Sea In Indonesian Popular Visual Culture, Susanne A. H. Sitohang, Teguh Prasetyo
Between Spectacle And Struggle: Representations Of The Sea In Indonesian Popular Visual Culture, Susanne A. H. Sitohang, Teguh Prasetyo
Kritika Kultura
Indonesia is a maritime nation, consisting of 17,500 islands—one-third of its geographical area is ocean. Thus, Indonesia declares its identity as an archipelagic nation and actively promotes the geographical facts mentioned above as maritime nationalism. However, the sea remains “secondary” compared to the land and it is frequently misrepresented in Indonesian popular visual culture. This article offers an analysis on how the sea is constructed across three popular visual texts, namely Wonderland Indonesia, a music video series produced by Alffy Rev; the film Budi Pekerti (2023); and The Bajau, a documentary, produced by Watchdoc. The analysis draws on Stuart Hall’s …
Reconfiguring "National Allegory" In A Critique Of The Philippine Neocolonial Experience, Epifanio San Juan Jr.
Reconfiguring "National Allegory" In A Critique Of The Philippine Neocolonial Experience, Epifanio San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
With appropriate adjustments, Jameson’s theory of national allegory can serve as a serviceable frame to interpret Filipino texts. Allegory as figuration or image-thinking aims to resolve conceptual blockage or theoretical dead-ends. Analyzing an exemplary story by Lualhati Bautista, this essay seeks to demonstrate how the author’s mode of representation captures the effect of combining feudal-archaic and capitalist modes of production in the lives of typical characters. Private thoughts and feelings conflict with public norms in the predicament of two uprooted protagonists caught in the crisis of a disaggregated polity. The Philippine social formation as a dependent entity exemplifies the mix …

Why National Allegory Stopped Its Vacation In Turkey?, Koray Kırmızısakal
Kritika Kultura
This article re-examines the Turkish reception of Fredric Jameson’s essay “Third-World Literature in the Era of Multinational Capitalism” through the lens of Aijaz Ahmad’s influential critique, which has shaped the readings of Murat Belge, Ahmet Oktay, Nurdan Gürbilek, Meltem Gürle, and Besim Dellaloğlu. These critics, following Ahmad, have charged Jameson with advancing a reductionist and at times Orientalist/Eurocentric view by claiming that the Third World (now the Global South) is structurally compelled to produce national allegories. Ahmad’s objection that the Third World cannot be reduced to a single form such as national allegory ultimately misreads Jameson’s broader theoretical engagement with …
The Violence Of Abstraction: Fredric Jameson, The “Asiatic Mode,” And The Problem Of Asia, Maria Luisa Torres Reyes, Alex Taek-Gwang Lee
The Violence Of Abstraction: Fredric Jameson, The “Asiatic Mode,” And The Problem Of Asia, Maria Luisa Torres Reyes, Alex Taek-Gwang Lee
Kritika Kultura
This forum introduction revisits Fredric Jameson’s engagement with Asia by focusing on a central tension in his work: the productive power of his world-historical method and the limitations of its reliance on the typological figure of the “Asiatic mode of production.” Rather than treating this tension as grounds for either dismissal or recuperation, the essay argues that Jameson’s categories become most useful precisely at the point where they encounter their limits, opening the possibility for alternative modes of theoretical practice. It proposes refunctioning and provincializing as complementary methodologies through which inherited concepts are displaced, reworked, and renewed in relation to …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Hypoxia, a condition characterized by insufficient oxygen availability to body tissues, is known to impair physiological and cognitive function, particularly at high altitudes above 15,000 ft. However, the effects of mild hypoxia (10,000–15,000 ft) remain less well understood. This study, conducted by the department of Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, investigates the impact of mild hypoxia at 12,000 ft on human balance systems. Specifically, it examines the three primary components of balance: visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems. Participants complete nine balance tasks under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Tasks are structured to progressively limit sensory input: …
A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart
A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Bullying in schools is often addressed through punitive deterrence practices, solution-focused counseling, or restorative conferencing. These approaches often fail to recognize or account for the power imbalance that ultimately sustains bullying. This article discusses a narrative-restorative intervention to address bullying as a relational and communal issue, rather than relying on isolation or deterrence practices. The limitations of the dominant models discussed highlight the role of power in shaping bullying dynamics and connect legal and ethical responsibilities of narrative-restorative practices. Situated within the framework of California education law and professional ethical standards, at its core, undercover anti-bullying teams aim to redistribute …

Artificial Intelligence (Ai) In Mental Health: Perceptions Of Ai Therapists, Ulker Yusupova
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This study explores how people perceive Artificial Intelligence (AI) therapists compared to human therapists, focusing on differences in empathy, effectiveness, and competence. As AI tools like ChatGPT and mental health chatbots become more commonly used for emotional support, it is important to understand how users evaluate them in comparison to human professionals. To begin addressing this, in the first part of the study, participants reviewed therapist-client conversation transcripts and identified whether they believed the therapist was human or AI-generated, helping us validate the materials for the main study. Notably, initial findings suggest that participants frequently relied more on surface-level language …

Quantifying Grain Size In Scanning Electron Microscopy Images, Katherine Hoffsetz
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project explores advanced image analysis techniques to assess the microstructure of highly strained austenitic stainless steel. Utilizing Python imaging libraries such as scikit-image and OpenCV, we aim to extract precise measurements for grain size from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. These metrics will be examined against the computed grain sizes of the sample from electron backscatter diffraction measurements. By automating the extraction of grain size measurements from SEM images, this study contributes to steamlining the quality assurance/ quality control of industrially processed materials.

Learning Casual Structures From Aviation Accident Narratives Using Natural Language Processing And Graph-Based Knowledge Representation, Stephanie Ramsey, Katherine Hoffsetz, Madeline Gorman, Logan Lambeth
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Understanding the complex causal relationships underlying aviation accidents is critical for improving safety and preventing future incidents. However, much of this information exists in unstructured narrative reports, making large-scale analysis difficult. This project aims to automatically extract and model causal chains from National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident narratives using a combination of traditional natural language processing (NLP) techniques, transformer-based architectures, and graph-based knowledge representation. Traditional NLP methods, including named entity recognition, dependency parsing, and rule-based pattern matching, will be used to identify structured cause–effect relationships. These approaches will be compared with transformer-based models, including a lightweight encoder for classification …
Numerical Modeling Of A Secondary Breakup In The Veritas Asteroid Family, Jarrett Dieterle
Numerical Modeling Of A Secondary Breakup In The Veritas Asteroid Family, Jarrett Dieterle
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The Veritas asteroid family, located in the outer main belt, is believed to have formed from the catastrophic breakup of a parent body approximately 8.3 million years ago (e.g., Nesvorný et al., 2003). Larger fragments remained in the main belt, while smaller particles evolved inward under radiation forces, forming a toroidal dust structure observable in infrared data as paired bands. Previous studies (e.g., Dermott et al., 2001) have shown that these bands can be linked to their parent families and modeled from their initial disruptions. We propose that the 10° dust bands associated with Veritas may record evidence of a …
Small Unmanned Aerial Systems-Assisted Airport Obstruction And Perimeter Inspections, Christopher Candler, Christopher M. Saylor, Marcus Thompson, Tejash Zala
Small Unmanned Aerial Systems-Assisted Airport Obstruction And Perimeter Inspections, Christopher Candler, Christopher M. Saylor, Marcus Thompson, Tejash Zala
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Airports are required to maintain obstruction-free airspace surfaces under 14 CFR Part 77; however, vegetation and perimeter obstruction management is often conducted through periodic ground inspections and contractor-led surveys that provide only snapshot conditions. These approaches may delay detection of encroachments into approach, transitional, horizontal, or primary surfaces, increasing the risk of operational impacts and reactive mitigation. This study proposes an FAA-aligned framework integrating small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) into obstruction monitoring workflows through recurring, repeatable perimeter inspections. High-resolution optical and LiDAR sensors, combined with RTK/PPK-enabled GNSS correction, generate centimeter-level geospatial datasets that are processed into canopy height models. These …
Geometry-Conditioned Adversarial Defense For Sar Automatic Target Recognition Via Regime-Specialist Classification Heads, Skyler Fabre
Geometry-Conditioned Adversarial Defense For Sar Automatic Target Recognition Via Regime-Specialist Classification Heads, Skyler Fabre
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project, titled Geometry-Conditioned Adversarial Defense for SAR Automatic Target Recognition via Regime-Specialist Classification Heads, addresses the critical vulnerability of deep neural networks deployed in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) systems to adversarial perturbations. This is where imperceptible pixel-level modifications cause confident misclassification, posing serious risks in defense and aerospace applications. The objective is to develop and evaluate RegimeResNet, a geometry-conditioned classification architecture that exploits sensor metadata unique to SAR collection systems. Rather than treating all images uniformly, RegimeResNet partitions the SAR capture space into nine geometric regimes defined by depression angle and target azimuth angle extracted …
Energy-Aware Bimodal Contact Detection For Leg Odometry, Emre Girgin
Energy-Aware Bimodal Contact Detection For Leg Odometry, Emre Girgin
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Autonomous exploration of extraterrestrial environments using legged robots requires robust GNSS-free 3D state estimation. Standard leg odometry relies on Zero-Velocity Updates (ZUPT), which assume a grounded foot remains completely stationary. This assumption consistently fails on deformable granular terrain due to unobservable slippage, rapidly degrading state estimation. To mitigate this critical failure mode, we propose a dual contact-detection framework designed to robustly gate an Error-State Extended Kalman Filter (ESEKF) tracking pose, velocity, and IMU biases. The architecture isolates physical load and kinematics by modeling contact detection as two independent parallel Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). The Load HMM processes Ground Reaction Forces, …

Assured Learning For Intelligent Dynamic Systems: A Metacognitive Framework, Rocio Jado Puente, Michael Budihartono, Eduar Cabrera Gaspar
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Assured Learning for Intelligent Dynamic Systems: A Metacognitive Framework Advanced Air Mobility systems, including electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and autonomous drone platforms, require increasingly high levels of autonomy and safety. Meeting these demands calls for intelligent systems that can adapt in real time to uncertainty and changing environmental conditions. However, traditional certification methods are not well suited to rigorously measure or quantitatively verify the performance of online learning components because of their non-deterministic behavior. This work introduces a novel runtime safety assurance method based on a metacognitive architecture (MCA) that supervises and regulates learning-enabled components. The approach …

Learning Motion Primitive Selection And Environment Abstraction, Edison Alberto Martinez Samaniego, Natalie Alexander, Kaelyn Weddle
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Learning Motion Primitive Selection and Environment Abstraction Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is emerging as a transformative solution for short and medium range transportation; however, it introduces an operational model that differs significantly from conventional aviation. AAM vehicles are expected to operate closer to populated areas, with increased autonomy, in dense urban and suburban environments. These settings present constrained maneuvering conditions which highlights the importance of maintaining safe operation under degraded flight conditions. Abnormal conditions may endanger onboard passengers, people on the ground, and surrounding infrastructure, making rapid detection and mitigation essential to prevent loss of control. Recent research has explored …

Is Lane Splitting/Lane Filtering Safe Or Dangerous?, Anastacio Doucas Nolas, Sierra Juliano, Shawn De La Osa, Kimberly R. Williamson
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This course-based research project examines whether lane splitting and lane filtering are inherently dangerous or whether their safety depends on human factors and traffic conditions. Using published crash, behavioral, and policy literature, the project compares how these motorcycle maneuvers affect riders and other road users across different roadway environments. The analysis distinguishes lane splitting, which occurs between moving lanes of traffic, from lane filtering, which typically occurs at low speeds in stopped or slow traffic queues. Findings suggest that safety cannot be explained by the maneuver alone. Instead, outcomes are shaped by speed differential, driver perception failures, rider workload, intersection …
Ai-Based Pilot Fatigue Monitoring For Enhanced Aviation Safety, Joshua Henderson, Alexander Landau, Braxton Moor, Jacky Yang, Caleb Difabio
Ai-Based Pilot Fatigue Monitoring For Enhanced Aviation Safety, Joshua Henderson, Alexander Landau, Braxton Moor, Jacky Yang, Caleb Difabio
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Pilot fatigue remains a persistent systemic operational hazard in commercial aviation because it can degrade attention, reaction time, decision-making, and crew coordination during safety-critical phases of flight. Although regulatory duty-time limits and Fatigue Risk Management Systems provide baseline protections, these controls rely heavily on voluntary reporting and post-event analysis, which may fail to detect fatigue in real time. The purpose of this project was to design and evaluate an artificial intelligence-enabled fatigue monitoring concept intended to reduce undetected pilot fatigue risk within the airline Safety Management System framework. The study applied a structured research approach including a literature review to …

The following activity promotes teacher noticing as a pedagogical tool for teachers in training, with a focus on the public speaking classroom. Many students enter the public speaking classroom filled with performance anxiety and fears of how their peers will perceive them. When a teacher can tap into these concerns via by noticing how students are reacting in the moment, they can assuage those anxieties and fears. Hence, teaching instructors effective teacher noticing in teacher training improves the classroom experience for teachers and students alike.
