Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost Aug 1999

Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study was to determine if selection for increased breast muscle mass has affected the supracoracoideus muscle's ability to regulate pH during physical activity in turkeys. The lightweight male line (LM) had the greatest breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight (p < 0.0001), a lower average pH (6.68; p < 0.0001), and greater Lactate Dehydrogenase (293 mmol NADH min-1mug-1 ; p < 0.0001) and Glyceraldehyde Phosphate Dehydrogenase (0.4452 mmol NADH min-1mug-1; p < 0.05) activities than the HM and FL lines. The LM line had the highest ratio (2.33:1) (p < 0.05) of adult to neonatal myosin. Hens had greater breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight than males (p < 0.0001), and a lower average pH (6.62; p < 0.05). This study showed that genetic selection for breast muscle mass resulted in an increased ratio of adult to neonatal myosin and an increased anaerobic capacity, which may predispose birds to a lower ultimate pH during physical activity.

Consistent Model And Moment Selection Criteria For Gmm Estimation With Application To Dynamic Panel Data Models, Donald W.K. Andrews, Biao Lu Aug 1999

Consistent Model And Moment Selection Criteria For Gmm Estimation With Application To Dynamic Panel Data Models, Donald W.K. Andrews, Biao Lu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops consistent model and moment selection criteria for GMM estimation. The criteria select the correct model specification and all correct moment conditions asymptotically. The selection criteria resemble the widely used likelihood-based selection criteria BIC, HQIC, and AIC. (The latter is not consistent.) The GMM selection criteria are based on the J statistic for testing over-identifying restrictions. Bonus terms reward the use of fewer parameters for a given number of moment conditions and the use of more moment conditions for a given number of parameters. The paper applies the model and moment selection criteria to dynamic panel data models …

The Spectrum Of Grb 930131 ("Superbowl Burst") From 20 Kev To 200 Mev, Volker Bromm, Bradley E. Schaefer Aug 1999

The Spectrum Of Grb 930131 ("Superbowl Burst") From 20 Kev To 200 Mev, Volker Bromm, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

We have constructed a broadband spectrum for GRB 930131 (the "Superbowl Burst"), ranging from 20 keV to 200 MeV, by combining spectral information from the Gamma Ray Observatory's BATSE, COMPTEL, and EGRET instruments. We present general methods for combining spectra from different time intervals obtained by the same instrument as well as for combining spectra from the same time interval taken by different instruments. The resulting spectrum is remarkably flat (in vFv-space) up to high energies. We find that the spectral shape can be successfully fitted by the shocked synchrotron emission model of Tavani. We present evidence that the flatness …

Theoretical And Practical Requirements For A System Of Pre-Design Analysis, Andrew S. Gibbons, Jon S. Nelson, Robert E. Richards

Faculty Publications

This research is aimed at bridging the worlds of simulation design as practiced by computer scientists and systems engineers and instructional design as practiced by a multitude of corporate, government, and military instructional designers, most of whom lack formal schooling in the techniques of either area.

Letters Of Credit, Voidable Preferences, And The "Independence" Principle, David G. Carlson, William H. Widen Aug 1999

Letters Of Credit, Voidable Preferences, And The "Independence" Principle, David G. Carlson, William H. Widen

Articles

The article challenges the traditional application of the independence principle in letters of credit within bankruptcy law, arguing that courts have misapplied this principle, leading to rulings that unfairly protect creditors. The authors propose treating the issuance of a letter of credit as a transfer of the debtor's property, making it subject to voidable preference rules under federal bankruptcy law. They advocate for a reinterpretation of the earmarking doctrine and suggest legislative action to clarify the treatment of letters of credit in bankruptcy, ensuring fairness and consistency in the legal framework.

Charge Dynamics In The Half-Metallic Ferromagnet Cro2, E. J. Singley, Christopher P. Weber, D. N. Basov, A. Barry, J. M. D. Coey

Physics

Infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure and charge carrier relaxation in crystalline films of CrO2 which is the simplest of all half-metallic ferromagnets. Chromium dioxide is a bad metal at room temperature but it has a remarkably low residual resistivity (<5 >μΩ cm) despite the small spectral weight associated with free carrier absorption. The infrared measurements show that low residual resistivity is due to the collapse of the scattering rate at ω<2000 >cm-1. The blocking of the relaxation channels at low v and T can be attributed to the unique electronic structure of a …

Implementation Of An Activity-Based Costing System In An Air Force Laboratory Environment, Jayson M. Wrona, Martin Memminger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the initial implementation of an Activity Based Costing (ABC) system within the United States Air Force's Research Laboratories (AFRL). We were attempting to ascertain what the initial purposes for implementing ABC within AFRL were, then determine whether or not those goals were being attained. We also attempted to evaluate the current system's appropriateness for achieving those initial purposes. Finally, we provide suggested changes to the model and areas for future research. We noted problems with AFRL's current ABC system. We were able to condense the problem into two main categories. First, when …

Investigation Of A Simultaneous Multithreaded Architecture, Marc Torrant Aug 1999

Investigation Of A Simultaneous Multithreaded Architecture, Marc Torrant

Theses

Many enhancements have been made to the traditional general purpose load-store computer architectures. Among the enhancements are memory hierarchy improvements, branch prediction, and multiple issue processors. A major problem that exists with current microprocessor design is the disparity in the much larger increase in speed of the CPU versus the moderate increase in speed accessing main memory. The simultaneous multithreaded architecture is an extension of the single-threaded architecture that helps hide the performance penalty created by long-latency instructions, branch mispredictions, and memory accesses. Simultaneous multithreaded architectures use a more flexible parallelism, which takes advantage of both instruction-level, and thread-level parallelism. …
