Fisheries Research Report No. 114 - The Western Australian Scallop Industry, D C. Harris, L M. Joll, R A. Watson

Fisheries Research Reports

Five separate commercial fisheries target the saucer scallop, Amusium balloti (Bernadi 1861) in Western Australian waters. While the average annual catch from these fisheries is around 600 tonnes of scallop meat, past catches have been highly variable with annual landings ranging from 150 to 4,400 tonnes of meat worth between $2 and $59 million. Consequently, scallops represent one of the larger single-species fisheries operating in Western Australia (WA).

A. balloti has a distribution spanning most of the WA coast, from Broome in the north around to Esperance in the south. Despite this extensive distribution, saucer scallops tend to be restricted …

Fisheries Research Report No. 115 - Statistical Analysis Of Gascoyne Region Recreational Fishing Study July 1996, Neil R. Sumner, Richard A. Steckis

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey of recreational fishers in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia was conducted in July 1996 to provide information required by fisheries managers. Catch rates, attitudinal, demographic and economic information from boat-based and shore-based fishers was collected by Fisheries Officers. Pink snapper (Pagrus auratus) was the primary species caught by boatbased recreational fishers in the region. Various species of whiting were the predominant catch from shore-based anglers. Most fishers interviewed (80%) supported the introduction of an upper limit on the amount of fish and fillets that a person could take away from the Gascoyne region for personal or family …

An In-Depth Analysis Of Students' Academic Retention Abilities In Traditional And Alternative Calendar Schools, Jennifer Reece Aug 1999

An In-Depth Analysis Of Students' Academic Retention Abilities In Traditional And Alternative Calendar Schools, Jennifer Reece

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The adoption of an alternative school calendar is a widely discussed topic in education reform today. The need to help students retain more academic skills after summer vacation is one reason school districts are considering alternative calendars. A recent study by Nofsinger (1999) of elementary students used Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) probes to measure academic skills in the Spring and the Fall in both traditional and alternative calendar schools. This present study further analyzed data collected during Nofsinger's (1999) study to determine whether certain groups of students (i.e., high, middle, and low achievers) gained more benefit from traditional or alternative calendars. …

Women's Campaign Rhetoric: A Case Study Of The 1998 Northup Congressional Campaign, Mary Banwart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As more women seek election to national political offices, and as political spot ads continue to play a vital role as a major medium through which campaigns present their candidate, this qualitative analysis examines the image-building strategies one female candidate employed in her spot ads and the potential for such strategies to overcome gender-culture constraints. This study answers four research questions: 1. What rhetorical strategies does Northup employ to build an image in her televised campaign spot ads, 2. Do these strategies fulfill the six dimensions employed by this thesis to fulfill the voter's image prototype of a candidate, 3. …

A Stochastic Analog To The Richardson's Arms Race Model, John Fricks Aug 1999

A Stochastic Analog To The Richardson's Arms Race Model, John Fricks

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, a stochastic version of the Richardson's arms race model is developed through the method of birth-death processes. The expected value of the model is explored and shown to be analogous to the original deterministic arms race model. The numerical method of randomization is then expanded and applied to the stochastic model. A comparison is then made between outcomes of the deterministic and stochastic models.

Peer Relations In The Ungraded Primary: An Examination Of Friendship And Its Benefits, Donna Gregory Aug 1999

Peer Relations In The Ungraded Primary: An Examination Of Friendship And Its Benefits, Donna Gregory

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mixed-age peer contexts have been considered important in the peer relations literature, but there has been relatively little research on children's peer relations in these settings. Ungraded primary programs mandated by recent school reform efforts in Kentucky provide a unique opportunity to study peer relations in a mixed-age context. The present study examined patterns of reciprocated friendship in ungraded primary classrooms and their relation to peer- and teacher-rated social competence. Both level of overall peer acceptance and age relative to ungraded primary classmates influenced the number and pattern of reciprocated friendships. Children who had friends were seen as more socially …

Near-Threshold Measurement Of Integrated Stokes Parameters For Kr Excited By Polarized Electrons, B. G. Birdsey, H. M. Al-Khateeb, M. E. Johnston, T. C. Bowen, Timothy J. Gay, V. Zeman, K. Bartschat

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We have made high-accuracy measurements of the integrated Stokes parameters for resonance fluorescence from polarized electron-impact excitation of the 4p55p[5/2] 3D3 and 4p55p [5/2] 3D2 states of Kr. We report measurements in the region within 0.6 eV of threshold, which is below the first cascade threshold. We also present theoretical calculations of these Stokes parameters using a recently developed relativistic Breit-Pauli Rmatrix code. In well LS-coupled systems, nonzero values of the integrated Stokes parameter P2 signal relativistic effects (like continuum spin-orbit coupling, i.e., Mott scattering). …

Using Atlas Data To Model The Distribution Of Woodpecker Species In The Jura, France, Claudine Tobalske, Bret W. Tobalske

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Breeding bird atlases providing distribution data at a regional scale are becoming increasingly common. To assess the ability of such data to develop bread-scale bird-habitat models, we used data from a breeding bird atlas and landscape variables obtained From a geographic information system (GIS) to study the distribution of seven woodpecker species in the Jura, France: the Black (Dryocopus martins), Green (Picus viridis). Grey-headed (P. canus), Great Spotted (Dendrocopos major), Middle Spotted (D. medius), and Lesser Spotted (D. minor) Woodpeckers, and the Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). We used logistic regression to develop predictive models from variables that described each 575-ha atlas …

Folding Dynamics Of Single Gcn-4 Peptides By Fluorescence Resonant Energy Transfer Confocal Microscopy, Yiwei Jia, David Talaga, Wai Leung Lau, Helen S.M. Lu, William F. Degrado, Robin M. Hochstrasser

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We have prepared a bichromophoric crosslinked variant of GCN4-P1 for single-molecule fluorescence energy transfer experiments (GCN4-Pf). The folding and unfolding fluctuations of single GCN4-Pf molecules are measured in a two-channel confocal microscope with which donor and acceptor fluorescence trajectories are measured simultaneously. The energy transfer efficiency is thereby determined and its probability distributions as a function of added denaturant [urea] are calculated. The distributions indicate that single molecule GCN4-Pf is in dynamic folding equilibrium with the position of the equilibrium being altered by the concentration of urea.

Development Of A Hard X-Ray Polarimeter For Astrophysics, Mark L. Mcconnell, John R. Macri, M Mcclish, James M. Ryan, D J. Forrest, W T. Vestrand

Space Science Center

We have been developing a Compton scatter polarimeter for measuring the linear polarization of hard X-rays (100-300 keV) from astrophysical sources. A laboratory prototype polarimeter has been used to successfully demonstrate the reliability of our Monte Carlo simulation code and to demonstrate our ability to generate a polarized photon source in the lab. Our design concept places a self-containedpolarimeter module on the front-end of a a 5-inch position sensitive PMT (PSPMT). We are currently working on the fabrication of a science model based on this PSPMT concept. Although the emphasis of our development effort is towards measuring hard X-rays from …
