Myths, Miscues, And Misconceptions: No-Aid Separationism And The Establishment Clause, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

In neutrality theory the recipients of vouchers, grants, and purchase-of-service contracts are eligible to participate as providers in government social service programs without regard to their religious character. Indeed, religious beliefs and practices are prohibited bases for screening out those who want to be welfare program providers. Notable examples of congressional social service legislation conforming to the rule of religious neutrality are the ‘charitable choice‘ feature imbedded in the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 and the Community Services Block Grant Act of 1998, as well as the provision allowing issuance of child care vouchers to indigent parents in the Child …

Behavior Modification, Rodger K. Bufford Jan 1999

Behavior Modification, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Behavior modification is "learning with a particular intent, namely clinical treatment and change" (Ullmann & Krasner, 1965, p. 1). Initially behavior modification referred largely to operant techniques and behavior therapy to respondent techniques. As early as 1965 the terms behavior modification and behavior therapy were used interchangeably (O'Donohue & Krasner, 1995). With publication of the journal Behavior Research and Therapy in 1963 and the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, behavior therapy became a general term for all of these techniques. Thus behavior therapy will be used in this discussion."

Exorcism, Rodger K. Bufford Jan 1999

Exorcism, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "A ritual for delivering persons from satanic or demonic domination. It somewhat parallels deprogramming, popularized in the 1970s to free individuals from cult influences. Within the Roman Catholic tradition exorcism ("solemn exorcism") is restricted to priests with specialized training and commissioning; it is normally used for those who are possessed or dominated by demons. Deliverance ("simple exorcism") is for persons troubled by demonic influence in some area of their lives who earnestly desire to be freed. Deliverance requires only a simple prayer, such as "In the name of Jesus Christ, unholy spirit, I command you to depart from this …

Implant Strategies On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Todd Milton, Frank Prouty Jan 1999

Implant Strategies On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Todd Milton, Frank Prouty

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A 145-day finishing trial was conducted to evaluate implant strategies on performance and carcass characteristics of yearling steers. Implanting steers with Synovex® C initially and then reimplanting with Synovex® Plus 75 days prior to slaughter improved feed efficiency compared to a single implant of Synovex® Plus or a reimplant program using Synovex® S. Carcass quality, as measured by the percentage USDA Choice carcasses and marbling scores, was unaffected by implant strategy. However, implanting steers with Synovex® PlusTM as a single implant or in a reimplant program increased profitability because feed efficiency and carcass weight were increased without decreasing carcass …

Pork Meat And Bone Meal Value Relative To Soybean Meal For Growing Calves, Casey Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Ryan Mass, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 1999

Pork Meat And Bone Meal Value Relative To Soybean Meal For Growing Calves, Casey Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Ryan Mass, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Individually fed steer calves (n=90) were used to evaluate different rendering procedures of pork meat and bone meal on protein quality as compared to soybean meal. Treatment proteins included an urea control, soybean meal, high-ash pork meat and bone meal, pork meat and bone meal control and non-enzymatically browned (NEB) pork meat and bone meal. High-ash meat and bone meal protein efficiency was higher than other treatments. However, the escape values determined by the ammonia release procedure were higher for NEB meat and bone meal, suggesting efficiency should have been improved relative to the control and high-ash meat and bone …

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi Jan 1999

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of three sections. In the first one, we overview the basic concepts and results of computation theory, the relationship with formal language theory, and present an introduction to the possible applications to different biological systems. The second section deals with the role of noise in the transmission of information in neurons. We show that a key component of the dynamics of action potential generation in neurons, the rectification of ionic flow and negative incremental resistance to ionic gradient, can occur in Brownian transport in the environment of the cell by a purely entropic effect, i.e. driven by …

Western Australian Agriculture - Key Achievements 1998 - 1999, Agriculture Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

During 1998/99 Western Australia's agricultural industries continued to build on an enviable international reputation for a professional approach to business and a proven track record in producing and supplying food and fibre products of consistently high ·quality.

A global increase in demand for food and fibre, changing consumer behaviour, and further world trade liberalisation offer great challenges and opportunities for the export of Western Australian agricultural produce. Agriculture Western Australia has responded to these changes with increased emphasis on quality assurance and supply chain management to focus on specific consumer and end-user requirements, and to improve alliances between producers, processors …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fourteen rats were examined and divided into two groups of 7: the control (Group a) and NGF-treated animals (Group B). All animals received a 50 g clip-compression injury to tthe spinal cord at the T9 level. In the NGF-treated animals, NGF (0.1 mg/kg NGF) was injected subcutaneously for seven days. After spinal cord injury, the mean AChE activity was 41.47±1.7122 activated substrate min/ml/gr. wet tissue and 47.52±1.471 in NGF-treated animals. The difference between Groups A and B was statistically significant (p

The ovulation rate was determined by the counting of corpora lutea in both of the ovaries 7 days after mating. The ovulation rate at day 7 in the PMSG group was (SE±)10.833±0.79, and …

A Review Of The Anticoagulant Pesticide Pindone, Laurie E. Twigg, Tim J. Lowe, Gary R. Martin, Garry S. Gray Jan 1999

A Review Of The Anticoagulant Pesticide Pindone, Laurie E. Twigg, Tim J. Lowe, Gary R. Martin, Garry S. Gray

Books & book chapters

A review of the use of pindone for rabbit control in Western Australia is timely due to increased public concern over the use of this toxin, and because non-target deaths of some native Australian animals have been known to occur following its use. Pindone is one of the first generation indandione anticoagulant rodenticides which were developed in the late 1940' s. The toxicity of anticoagulants arises from their inhibition of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the blood. Thus therapeutic administration of vitamin K provides a reliable antidote against anticoagulant poisoning. Pindone is slow acting and works best with repeated small …

Response Of Coyotes To Avian Distress Calls : Testing The Startle-Predator And Predator-Attraction Hypotheses, Frederick F. Knowlton, Michael R. Conover, Kristi K. Wise Jan 1999

Response Of Coyotes To Avian Distress Calls : Testing The Startle-Predator And Predator-Attraction Hypotheses, Frederick F. Knowlton, Michael R. Conover, Kristi K. Wise

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We tested two hypotheses proposed to explain why many birds emit distress calls when in the grasp of a predator: the startle-predator and predator-attraction hypotheses. Responses of captive coyotes to a starling distress call were compared between no-call and call trials to determine whether coyotes are startled by the call, and if so, whether they habituated to it. The coyotes were then paired and re-tested to determine whether the call incites a second coyote to approach and interfere with the attack of the initial coyote. Most coyotes exhibited a startle response during their first exposure to the distress call, their …

New York, Printz, And The Driver's Privacy Protection Act: Has Congress Commandeered The State Department Of Motor Vehicles?, Adam S. Halpern Jan 1999

New York, Printz, And The Driver's Privacy Protection Act: Has Congress Commandeered The State Department Of Motor Vehicles?, Adam S. Halpern

UC Law Journal

In New York v. United States, the Supreme Court set forth the rule that any federal law which directs state governments to enact specific legislation is per se unconstitutional. The Court characterized these federal laws as attempts to "commandeer" the States' governmental machinery. The Court reaffirmed and extended the so-called "anti-commandeering" principle in Printz v. United States, holding that Congress may not constitutionally pass a law that directs a State's administrative officials to take a particular action. In the wake of these decisions, two U.S. circuit courts of appeals have struck down as unconstitutional the Driver's Privacy Protection Act of …

Part III gives an overview of current regulation under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. Also a brief discussion of the legislation that preceded the DSHEA is offered in section VI. Part V of this Note analyzes and defines the dietary ingredients that are …

Consumer-Directed Prescription Drug Advertising: Effects On Public Health , William E. Holtz Jan 1999

Consumer-Directed Prescription Drug Advertising: Effects On Public Health , William E. Holtz

Journal of Law and Health

This Paper will evaluate the effectiveness of the current FDA regulatory scheme regarding consumer-directed prescription drug advertising. Part II discusses the relevant history of consumer-directed prescription drug advertising of prescription drugs which is a relatively new practice in the United States. Possible explanations are reviewed for why the change in focus from physicians to consumers as the targets of such advertising has occurred. Part III explains the major classifications of consumer-directed advertising that the FDA has categorized and examines the differences existing among them. Part IV focuses on the current FDA regulatory scheme and begins to expose some of the …

Effect Of Hypoxia On The Respiratory Burst And Associated Bactericidal Activity In The Pronephritic Cells Of The Mummichog, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Ann Boleza Jan 1999

Effect Of Hypoxia On The Respiratory Burst And Associated Bactericidal Activity In The Pronephritic Cells Of The Mummichog, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Kimberly Ann Boleza

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Estuaries provide habitat and spawning grounds for numerous species of plants, birds, fish and shellfish. Levels of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH in estuarine waters vary with diurnal, tidal and seasonal cycles. Anthropogenic factors may further exacerbate these variations in water quality. The studies presented here tested the hypothesis that hypoxia, including hypercapnia and acidosis, suppresses antibacterial defenses provided by phagocytic cells. The respiratory burst of phagocytic cells was stimulated with zymosan and Vibrio parahaemolyticus to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which are potent antibacterial agents. The respiratory burst is oxygen dependent and therefore may be inhibited by hypoxic …

Determining The Effects Of Epidermal Growth Factor (Egf) On Egf Receptor Mrna Stability In Kb Cells, Jennifer Inn Jan 1999

Determining The Effects Of Epidermal Growth Factor (Egf) On Egf Receptor Mrna Stability In Kb Cells, Jennifer Inn

Honors Capstones

Regulation of gene expression occurs at several levels, one being mRNA stability. Cis determinants, such as the poly(A) tail, 3’ and 5’ untranslated regions (UTRs), and coding region sequences along with trans-acting factors contribute significantly to mRNA stability. Our research focuses on the 3’ UTR of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) mRNA and its potential role as a stability determinant. For this study, a chimeric construct was created containing the well-characterized rabbit 13-globin gene with the EGF-R 3’ UTR replacing the 13-globin 3’ UTR (pBBUIII). A second plasmid (pcDNABBF) differing only in the 3’ UTR being from c-fos was made …
