Microbiology Of The Oil Fly, Helaeomyia Petrolei, Dana R. Kadavy, Bradley A. Plantz, Christopher A. Shaw, Jill Myatt, Tyler A. Kokjohn, Kenneth Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

Helaeomyia petrolei larvae isolated from the asphalt seeps of Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, Calif., were examined for microbial gut contents. Standard counts on Luria-Bertani, MacConkey, and blood agar plates indicated ca. 2 x 105 heterotrophic bacteria per larva. The culturable bacteria represented 15 to 20% of the total population as determined by acridine orange staining. The gut itself contained large amounts of the oil, had no observable ceca, and maintained a slightly acidic pH of 6.3 to 6.5. Despite the ingestion of large amounts of potentially toxic asphalt by the larvae, their guts sustained the growth of …

The Feasibility Of Controlling The Brown Treesnake In Small Plots, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Earl W. Campbell Iii Apr 1999

The Feasibility Of Controlling The Brown Treesnake In Small Plots, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Earl W. Campbell Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

There is an urgent need to provide snake-free or snake-reduced habitats for the wildlife species on Guam that have declined or disappeared as a result of predation by the Brown Treesnake, Boiga irregularis (Savidge, 1987; Fritts, 1988; Rodda and Fritts, 1992; Rodda et al., this volume, Chap. 2). At present, we know of no practical techniques for reducing or eradicating the snake throughout Guam, a densely populated island of 54,100 ha. Conserving native wildlife and reducing the incidences of snakes boarding ship and aircraft may not require the elimination of snakes from the entire island, however. Elimination of snakes from …

An Overview Of The Biology Of The Brown Treesnake* (Boiga Irregularis), A Costly Introduced Pest On Pacific Islands, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Michael J. Mccoid, Earl W. Campbell Iii Apr 1999

An Overview Of The Biology Of The Brown Treesnake* (Boiga Irregularis), A Costly Introduced Pest On Pacific Islands, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Michael J. Mccoid, Earl W. Campbell Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The 20-30 species of the genus Boiga (Colubridae, Boiginae) range from tropical Africa through southern Asia to Melanesia and Australia (Leviton, 1968). Collectively, they are known as catsnakes, mangrove snakes, or treesnakes (Obst et al., 1988; Greene, 1989). The common name "catsnakes" is sometimes used for snakes in the genus Telescopus as well (Obst et 1, 1988).

Members of the genus Boiga are nocturnal, oviparous, opisthoglyphic, euryphagic, and slender; they have vertical elliptical pupils (thus “cat” snakes) set in large eyes, and short, blunt heads that are noticeably larger than their necks. With one exception they are arboreal or semiarboreal …

The Sulpicians And The Sisters Of Charity: Concentric Circles Of Mission, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Apr 1999

The Sulpicians And The Sisters Of Charity: Concentric Circles Of Mission, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article focuses on the Sulpicians’ role in the establishment of the Sisters of Charity and their union with the Daughters of Charity. It also “discuss[es] mission determinants and their implications for contemporary ministry.” The Sulpicians became the superiors of the Sisters of Charity to meet the needs of the Church in the United States, an adaptation of the Sulpician charism of educating the clergy. They introduced the Rules of the Daughters of Charity to the Sisters, which they adapted to suit life in the United States and to suit their community as an independent American foundation. The Sulpicians also …

The Machtpolitik Doctrine From Antiquity To Present, Brian Abendshein Apr 1999

The Machtpolitik Doctrine From Antiquity To Present, Brian Abendshein

Masters Theses

The thesis is an archival study of international relations. This thesis will analyze the Machtpolitik, or power politics, doctrine from its beginnings in Plato's Republic to the present day. In considering this evolution the thesis will seek to address the following three main questions. First, does traditional machtpolitik doctrine still exist today? Second, has the rise of democratic systems of government limited the effectiveness of diplomacy? Third, what are the causes of international instability? The debate over these questions in modern times is framed by three main factions: Idealists, Descriptive Realists, and Normative Realists. Each of these positions will be …

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner Apr 1999

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner

Masters Theses

This study replicated the effects of differential outcomes on the acquisition of a cocaine-saline discrimination in rats and examined whether learning via differential outcomes (DO) influenced stimulus generalization to other drugs. Previous investigations have suggested that the dopamine (DA) D3 receptor subtype may modulate the reinforcing effects of cocaine. Pharmacological compounds which have been identified as having a greater affinity for DA D3 receptors are 7-OH-DPAT and PD 128907. The present study examined whether the DO conditions applied during training had an impact on the generalization of these test compounds. Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate …

Margolisianum Bulbosum N. Gen., N. Sp. (Nematoda: Philometridae) From The Southern Flounder, Paralichthys Lethostigma (Pisces: Bothidae), In Mississippi Sound, Usa, Reginald B. Blaylock, Robin M. Overstreet Apr 1999

Margolisianum Bulbosum N. Gen., N. Sp. (Nematoda: Philometridae) From The Southern Flounder, Paralichthys Lethostigma (Pisces: Bothidae), In Mississippi Sound, Usa, Reginald B. Blaylock, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new species of a philometrid nematode, Margolisianum bulbosum, is described from the subcutaneous tissue in the mouth (larvigerous females), head (males, ovigerous, and larvigerous females), and eye (preovigerous females) of the southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, from Mississippi Sound. It is placed in a new genus diagnosed by the combination of 8 large, paired but separate cephalic papillae; no inner cephalic papillae; an esophagus with a separate, muscular anterior bulb; a prominent mononuclear esophageal gland; and variable, irregularly distributed cuticular bosses in the females, as well as a vestigial rectum, particularly in larvigerous females. Some female specimens exhibit …

Is Progressive Constitutionalism Possible?, Robin West Apr 1999

Is Progressive Constitutionalism Possible?, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Progressivism is in part a particular moral and political response to the sadness of lesser lives, lives unnecessarily diminished by economic, psychic and physical insecurity in the midst of a society or world that offers plenty. This insecurity is unjust and should end; the suffering should be alleviated, and those lives should be enriched. To do so must be one of the goals of a morally just or justifiable state. Not all suffering and not all lesser lives, of course, give rise to such a response. The suffering attendant to accident, disease, war and happenstance is neither entirely chargeable to …

The Good Samaritan: A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

Before modernity, Christians read this parable allegorically, with the Samaritan, for example, aptly typifying Christ. Such a reading becomes even stronger when enriched by the full plan of salvation.

Promising Practice For K-16 - Project Connect: School-University Collaboration For Service-Learning, Education Commission Of The States

Partnerships/Community

Partnership is a recurring theme in education these days: partnerships between schools and communities, between colleges and nonprofit organizations, between high schools and elementary schools, and between K-12 and higher education systems. Whether one refers to the latter partnerships as K-16, Pre-K-H or K-PhD, what truly defines them is the level and type of interactions among the school, university and community.

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

BACKGROUND: Defects of the facial bone structure are common problems for the facial plastic surgeon. Native type 1 collagen gels (T1CGs) have been shown to mediate repair of facial critical-size defects in rat models.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of T1CG augmented with insulinlike growth factor (IGF) 1, IGF-2, and a combination of IGF-1 and IGF-2 on the repair of facial critical-size defects in a rodent model.

METHODS: Twenty-four retired male breeder Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 animals. Facial critical-size defects were created by removing the nasalis bones with a bone-cutting drill. Defects were treated with …
