A Chile Forecast For Accession To Nafta: A Process Of Economic, Legal And Environmental Harmonization, Jeffrey Lax Apr 1999

A Chile Forecast For Accession To Nafta: A Process Of Economic, Legal And Environmental Harmonization, Jeffrey Lax

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note argues that Chile is a prime candidate for accession to NAFTA due to its strong economy and commitment to free trade principles, despite facing obstacles such as intellectual property and agricultural law discrepancies. It suggests that a gradual integration approach and the use of NAFTA as an incentive could facilitate Chile's accession, benefiting both the US and Chile in the long term.

Indoor/Outdoor: Poems, Jeffrey Greer Apr 1999

Indoor/Outdoor: Poems, Jeffrey Greer

Dissertations

The poems in this manuscript can be sorted into two distinct, but compatible, categories. First, a series of narrative poems attempt to challenge Edgar Allen Poe’s dictum that an American poet cannot successfully write a poem longer than 100 lines. These poems approach coherent subjects through disjunctive forms. There is non-linear and linear movement in these poems that meander along in an attempt to capture a witnessed scene along with the action of making sense of that witnessing. There is a process of breaking the familiar and coherent down into something strange, then reconstituting it again into something newer and …

Conservation Status Of The Southern Appalachian Herpetofauna, Joseph C. Mitchell, Thomas K. Pauley, David I. Withers, Steven M. Roble, Brian T. Miller, Alvin L. Braswell, Paul V. Cupp Jr., Christopher S. Hobson

Virginia Journal of Science

Seventy one species of amphibians (55 salamanders, 16 anurans) and 46 species of reptiles (15 turtles, 8 lizards, 23 snakes) inhabit a five state area (Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia) in the southern Appalachian region bordered by the Potomac River, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the western margin of the Appalachian Plateau. Of these, 47.9 % of the amphibian fauna and 52.2 % of the reptilian fauna are listed as being of conservation concern by federal, state, and Natural Heritage programs in all or a portion of their ranges of this region. The Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon Shenandoah …

Bulletin 4359 - Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, Mike Bolland Apr 1999

Bulletin 4359 - Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, Mike Bolland

Bulletins 4000 -

Almost all the soils of the Swan coastal plain are formed by material deposited by sea, rivers and wind. The Yilgarn Block, east and south of the Scarp bordering the Swan Coastal Plain (Fig. 1), rose about 40 to 50 million years ago. This caused erosion of the block by rivers and streams, and the eroded material was either deposited onto the Swan Coastal Plain or washed into the sea. The eroded material formed new soils on the Plain.

Broadly there are two major types of soils on the Coastal Plain. The first is a series of dune system near …

Real-Time Monitoring Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Adherence To Beef Carcass Surface Tissues With A Bioluminescent Reporter, Gregory R. Siragusa, Kevin Nawotka, Stanley D. Spilman, Pamela R. Contag, Christopher H. Contag Apr 1999

Real-Time Monitoring Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Adherence To Beef Carcass Surface Tissues With A Bioluminescent Reporter, Gregory R. Siragusa, Kevin Nawotka, Stanley D. Spilman, Pamela R. Contag, Christopher H. Contag

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A method for studying bacteria that are attached to carcass surfaces would eliminate the need for exogenous sampling and would facilitate understanding the interaction of potential human food-borne pathogens with food animal tissue surfaces. We describe such a method in which we used a bioluminescent reporter strain of Escherichia coli O157:H7 that was constructed by transformation with plasmid pCGLS1, an expression vector that contains a complete bacterial luciferase (lux) operon. Beef carcass surface tissues were inoculated with the bioluminescent strain, and adherent bacteria were visualized in real time by using a sensitive photon-counting camera to obtain in situ …

International Trade And Commerce: A Bridge For The Israelipalestinian Peace, Amir H. Khoury Apr 1999

International Trade And Commerce: A Bridge For The Israelipalestinian Peace, Amir H. Khoury

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the legal and economic framework governing trade between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), emphasizing the critical role of trade in advancing the peace process. While the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements (DOP) and the Economic Protocol established foundational principles for economic cooperation, ambiguities in these agreements and practical challenges, such as border closures, hinder effective trade relations. The article argues that addressing these issues is essential to fostering economic interdependence and mutual benefit, which are key to sustaining peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.

Franchisor Liability For The Torts Of Its Franchisees: The Case For Substituting Liability As A Guarantor For The Current Vicarious Liability, John L. Hanks Apr 1999

Franchisor Liability For The Torts Of Its Franchisees: The Case For Substituting Liability As A Guarantor For The Current Vicarious Liability, John L. Hanks

Articles

The author reviews the justifications for applying the law of vicarious liability in the franchising context and concludes that its application is often inefficient and arbitrary. He argues that the employee-independent contractor dichotomy used by courts to determine franchisor liability is not well-suited to franchising, where the relationship encompasses both concepts. He proposes that vicarious liability not be applied in the franchising context. Instead, the courts by case law or state legislatures by statute should impose a guarantor status on franchisors that would expose them to liability for the torts of the franchisees only if the franchisee was unavailable to …

Religion And Violence In Popular Film, Bryan Stone Apr 1999

Religion And Violence In Popular Film, Bryan Stone

Journal of Religion & Film

Contemporary viewers of popular film are likely to have their values, perceptions, and behavior with regard to violence shaped by the cumulative effect of film conventions and recurrent images. An analysis of the top grossing films during the 1990's reveals that when religion is portrayed in connection with violence, it is rarely taken seriously as a motivating force for rejecting violence. On the contrary, while religion can play a chaplaincy or sanctuary role on screen for victims of violence, it typically serves either as a force for justifying and legitimating violence or as a device for enhancing the entertainment value …

Scripture On The Silver Screen, Adele Reinhartz Apr 1999

Scripture On The Silver Screen, Adele Reinhartz

Journal of Religion & Film

My course on the Bible and film, and my own fledgling research in the area, are based on two related assumptions. The first is that movies both reflect and also shape our views, norms, and attitudes. The second is that the majority of the movie-going audience has little direct knowledge of, or contact with, the Bible, and thus has no prior experiences against which to test its cinematic utilization. The testing of these assumptions I leave to social scientists, who are better equipped than biblical exegetes to measure and analyse the impact of the movies on their viewers. My aim …

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

During this symposium the standardization of the nomenclature of Trypanosoma cruzi strains was discussed, in a parallel session, with a view to facilitating the use and understanding of a common nomenclature that would serve not only taxonomists but the general community of researchers working with T. cruzi.

The diversity in the behavior and morphology of T. cruzi isolates was soon recognized after the discovery of Chagas disease. Since then a variety of biochemical and molecular techniques have revealed the great genetic diversity present in strains of this parasite. Different investigators have described this diversity by using various …
