Objectives. To investigate the efficacy of rhBMP-2 with an absorbable collagen sponge carrier to promote spinal fusion in a nonhuman primate anterior interbody fusion model.

Summary of Background Data. RhBMP-2 is an osteoinductive growth factor capable of inducing new bone formation in vivo. Although dosage studies using rhBMP-2 have been performed on species of lower phylogenetic level, they cannot be extrapolated to the primate. Dosage studies on nonhuman primates are essential before proceeding with human primate application. …

Prosecuting Race, Anthony V. Alfieri Apr 1999

Prosecuting Race, Anthony V. Alfieri

Duke Law Journal

Theoreticians and practitioners in the American criminal justice system increasingly debate the role of racial identity, racialized narratives, and race-neutral representation in law, lawyering, and ethics. This debate holds special bearing on the growing prosecution and defense of acts of racially motivated violence. In this continuing investigation of the prosecution and defense of such violence, Professor Alfieri examines the recent federal prosecution of five white New York City police officers charged with assaulting Abner Louima, a young male Haitian immigrant, in 1997. Professor Alfieri presents a raceconscious, community-oriented model of prosecutorial discretion guided by constitutional precepts, citizenship ideals, professionalism values, …

Fiber-Optic Coupled Lidar Receiver System To Measure Stratospheric Ozone, David Brent Harper Apr 1999

Fiber-Optic Coupled Lidar Receiver System To Measure Stratospheric Ozone, David Brent Harper

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A fiber-optic coupled lidar receiver system was constructed to determine ozone concentrations in the stratosphere. The system was used to make ground-based measurements of lidar returns from a UV DIAL system. A fiber-optic cable was used to couple the light from the receiver telescope to the light detector. Photon counting was implemented as the light detection technique. This technique allowed detection of 301 and 311 nm lidar returns up to 27.5 and 32.5 km respectively. A software application was developed to control the photon counting system and perform real-time data analysis of measured lidar returns. DIAL measurements of stratospheric ozone …

The Physical Attractiveness Of One's Rival: A Self- Evaluation Maintenance Perspective, Robin Elizabeth Roy

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment examined women's state body images and reactions of jealousy based on reading scenarios describing a party. The scenario described the woman watching her partner engaging in conversation with either a physically attractive or unattractive woman. Ninety heterosexual female college students completed a pretest packet containing measures that assessed body image evaluation and investment. After a week, they read one of the two scenarios and completed the state body image measure, experiential sampling assessment, jealousy questionnaire„manipulation check, and postexperimental inquiry. As expected, there was more jealousy toward the attractive woman, and more jealousy expressed by those dysfunctionafiy invested …

EME caused arterial blood pressure to significantly increase from a control …

Production Of Copper-Complexing Ligands In Response To Elevated Concentrations Of Copper In Marine Synechococcus Spp., Arunsri Chatkaeomorakot Brown Apr 1999

Production Of Copper-Complexing Ligands In Response To Elevated Concentrations Of Copper In Marine Synechococcus Spp., Arunsri Chatkaeomorakot Brown

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Synechococcus spp. (marine cyanobacteria) are extremely sensitive to copper toxicity and can produce high-affinity ligands of unknown structure which form complexes with free cupric ion. These ligands may contribute to the biological control of the levels of free cupric ions in surface seawater. Synechococcus spp. are known to produce metallothioneins (MT) in response to cadmium and zinc stress. In the present study the hypothesis that marine Synechococcus produce MT in response to copper was tested. Three marine Synechococcus spp. i.e., PCC 7001, PCC 73109, and PCC 7003, were exposed to different concentrations of CUSO 4 for various time periods. Size …

Factors That Affect African-American Enrollment In Urban Agricultural Degree Programs In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Thomas Earl Tracy Apr 1999

Factors That Affect African-American Enrollment In Urban Agricultural Degree Programs In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Thomas Earl Tracy

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to determine reasons why few African Americans are in leadership positions in the urban agriculture industry. The lack of leaders will probably continue because there is a dearth of African Americans enrolled in agriculture programs at colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Six research questions guided the study in its endeavor to determine perceptions about the urban agriculture industry. Data were collected through surveys and interviews. A background questionnaire, developed by the researcher collected data on age, academic interests, urban background, exposure to agriculture occupations, and factors that affected selection of college …

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In Neotropical Avifauna From Northwest Costa Rica, Virginia L. Flanagin '99 Apr 1999

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In Neotropical Avifauna From Northwest Costa Rica, Virginia L. Flanagin '99

Honors Projects

We collected baseline data on organochlorine (OC) pesticide contamination in resident passerine birds from northwest Costa Rica in an area where pesticides had not been used in at least 30 years. Results were compared with a previous study of OC contamination in mayfly larvae (Euthyplocia hecuba) collected from the same region. Thirteen OC compounds were detected in the ng/g range for 19 of 56 birds sampled, and the highest OC frequencies were found in birds collected from Pitilla, the site closest to agricultural areas. Atmospheric transport could be a mechanism by which the pesticides are traveling from agricultural areas to …

Insolvency Counselling--Innovation Based On The Fourteenth Century, Carol Ann Curnock Apr 1999

Insolvency Counselling--Innovation Based On The Fourteenth Century, Carol Ann Curnock

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In the fourteenth century, poverty (previously viewed as a virtue) was redefined by both church and state as illegal and immoral. This view persists in Canada today. The 1992 amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA) included a provision that makes two counselling sessions mandatory for all persons going through bankruptcy. The author reviews The BIA Insolvency Counsellor's Qualification Course that was developed in support of this amendment, and concludes that it is not up to the task. The mandatory counselling presumes a bankrupt person's irresponsibility, addiction, and need for referral to community service agencies. However, these presumptions are …

Consumer Bankruptcy In Comparison: Do We Cure A Market Failure Or A Social Problem, Johanna Niemi-Kiesilainen Apr 1999

Consumer Bankruptcy In Comparison: Do We Cure A Market Failure Or A Social Problem, Johanna Niemi-Kiesilainen

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Continental European and Scandinavian bankruptcy laws did not have provisions enabling the discharge of debt until quite recently. While bankruptcy law did not specifically exclude consumer debtors, in the absence of discharge, consumer bankruptcy was meaningless and rare. After the deregulation of credit markets in the 1980s, many west European countries faced a huge increase in consumer debt problems. Several countries passed consumer debt adjustment laws during the late 1980s and 1990s. Unlike the North American consumer bankruptcy laws, the European laws attach moral attributes to the access to adjustment procedures, which require a mandatory payment plan, and offer …

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors Apr 1999

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project in ministry titled, "Single Parent Ministry in the Local Church," is the result of the author's concern for the unique issues faced by today's ever increasing single parent households. This relatively new phenomenon is discussed in light of the historical roots of singleness in general. It is then shown that this "new phenomenon" is really not new at all. Single Parenting is virtually as old as creation itself, going back to the first single parent described in the Bible, Hagar. Much instruction regarding the circumstances of the single parent is discussed. The paper then examines the various, specific …

Role Of Gamma Interferon In Cellular Immune Response Against Murine Encephalitozoon Cuniculi Infection, Imtiaz A. Khan, Magali Moretto Apr 1999

Role Of Gamma Interferon In Cellular Immune Response Against Murine Encephalitozoon Cuniculi Infection, Imtiaz A. Khan, Magali Moretto

Dartmouth Scholarship

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that cause a wide variety of opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS. Because it is able to grow in vitro, Encephalitozoon cuniculi is currently the best-studied microsporidian. T cells mediate protective immunity against this parasite. Splenocytes obtained from infected mice proliferate in vitro in response to irradiated parasites. A transient state of hyporesponsiveness to parasite antigen and mitogen was observed at day 17 postinfection. This downregulatory response could be partially reversed by addition of nitric oxide (NO) antagonist to the culture. Mice infected withE. cuniculi secrete significant levels of gamma interferon (IFN-γ). Treatment …

Pregnant Rat Uterus Expresses High Levels Of The Type 3 Iodothyronine Deiodinase, Valerie Anne Galton, Elena Martinez, Arturo Hernandez, Emily A. St. Germain, Joanne M. Bates, Donald L. St. Germain Apr 1999

Pregnant Rat Uterus Expresses High Levels Of The Type 3 Iodothyronine Deiodinase, Valerie Anne Galton, Elena Martinez, Arturo Hernandez, Emily A. St. Germain, Joanne M. Bates, Donald L. St. Germain

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although thyroid hormones are critically important for the coordination of morphogenic processes in the fetus and neonate, premature exposure of the embryo to levels of the hormones present in the adult is detrimental and can result in growth retardation, malformations, and even death. We report here that the pregnant rat uterus expresses extremely high levels of the type 3 iodothyronine deiodinase (D3), which inactivates thyroxine and 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine by 5-deiodination. Both D3 mRNA and activity were present at the implantation site as early as gestational day 9 (E9), when expression was localized using in situ hybridization to uterine mesometrial and antimesometrial …

Acorn Foraging As A Means To Explore Human Energetics And Forge Connections To Local Forests, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Pamela Lockwood, Christopher Uhl Apr 1999

Acorn Foraging As A Means To Explore Human Energetics And Forge Connections To Local Forests, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Pamela Lockwood, Christopher Uhl

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Jeffrey Gerwing, Pamela Lockwood, and Christopher Uhl describe a rather unusual ecology laboratory/field exercise that utilizes abundant oak habitats of central Pennsylvania. For those readers not blessed with an abundant supply of oaks nearby, perhaps other species could be substituted. The exercise is unusual in two ways. It offers a new undergraduate ecology activity, and it offers opportunities for students to relate other disciplines to their science course.

In "the good old days" of higher education each discipline offered its menu of courses and expected students to make appropriate connections among the courses of their major, minor, and general education. …

Using Video Of A Master Farmer To Teach Others, Jim G. Polson

Journal of Extension

An inexpensively produced videotape of a master dairy farmer showing how he manages his dairy farm had a significant educational impact on other dairy farmers. A survey of farmers who watched the video showed that every dairy farmer identified something important they learned from watching it. Sixty-nine percent of them adopted one or more new practices in their business. Keys to successful video production were an articulate master farmer who uses innovative production practices; an inquisitive team of university faculty asking questions as they toured the farm, and careful preparation and use of audio and video equipment. Inexpensively produced videos …
