Dissolved Organic Carbon Cycling In A Subtropical Seagrass-Dominated Lagoon, Susan Ziegler, Ronald Benner May 1999

Dissolved Organic Carbon Cycling In A Subtropical Seagrass-Dominated Lagoon, Susan Ziegler, Ronald Benner

Faculty Publications

The cycling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its significance to ecosystem metabolism was studled over a 16 mo period in a Thalassia testudjnum dominated meadow. The benthos was usually net autotrophic (annual gross primary production to respiration ratio [P:R] = 1.3) while water column respiration (R) exceeded gross primary production (annual P:R = 0.3). Net fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the benthos primarily occurred in the light (0 to 18 mmol C m-2 d-1) and from seagrass-dominated areas, suggesting that release of DOC was mainly due to seagrass exudation. Net benthic DOC fluxes measured …

An Evaluation Of Gastrointestinal Parasites In The Mixed Breed/Pure Breed Pound Dog Population Of East Baton Rouge Parish, Stalanda L. Bradford May 1999

An Evaluation Of Gastrointestinal Parasites In The Mixed Breed/Pure Breed Pound Dog Population Of East Baton Rouge Parish, Stalanda L. Bradford

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

ABSTRACT An evaluation of gastrointestinal parasites was performed on mixed breed and pure breed pound dogs of East Baton Rouge Parish. Fecal samples were analyzed by the Modified Sheather's Sugar Floatation Technique. Of the 54 canine specimens, 55.6% were female and 44.4% were males. Overall, 19 of the 54 (35.19%) canines were infected. The male canines had the higher infectious condition of the two genders, and the crossbred canines had the higher infectious condition of the two breeds. Also, hookworms were the most prevalent gastrointestinal parasites found within this population.

The Exploration Of Artificial Intelligence Through The Analysis And Design Of Expert Systems, Avis R. Calvert

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Expert systems are a rapidly developing area of research. A sub-area of artificial intelligence, the success of expert systems depends heavily on an expert of a particular subject matter and that expert's ability to make analytical inferences based upon the human capacity to reason and deduce. Because the broad and ultimate goal of artificial intelligence is to develop computers capable of emulating human behavioral and psychoanalytical patterns, there is much to discover about the learning component of a computer. This thesis focuses on the development and the complexity of expert systems. Included, is a brief history of expert systems, a …

The Effect Of Acute Exposure To Glyphosate On Reproductive Potential And Embryo Development Of Pseudosuccinea Columella Snail, Ambika N. Osborn May 1999

The Effect Of Acute Exposure To Glyphosate On Reproductive Potential And Embryo Development Of Pseudosuccinea Columella Snail, Ambika N. Osborn

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Glyphosate (Roundup) is one of the most commonly used broad spectrum herbicides used with little to no toxicity to higher animals or the environment (Smith and Ochme, 1992). Due to its widespread use, there is a continuous contamination of the environment in both soil and water, with this herbicide. This study was developed to determine the effects of sublethal concentrations of glyphosate on development and survivability of Pseudosuccinea columella snails (intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica). This was assessed by acutely exposing third generation snails to varying concentrations (0.01-1ppm) of glyphosate. The snails were kept on artificial spring water to which …

An Investigation Of Non-Verbal Auditory Cues Within Graphical User Interfaces, Christopher Hahn May 1999

An Investigation Of Non-Verbal Auditory Cues Within Graphical User Interfaces, Christopher Hahn

Theses

As we approach the end of the century and enter into a digital era there is a need to concentrate on new methods of communication. The expansion of personal computers into the industrial sector and more recently into the home, has brought the ability to transmit various forms of data to the average user. This new ability is accompanied with a responsibility to communicate effectively and clearly. This study focuses on the ability of user interfaces to effectively communicate combinations of visual and auditory cues to produce a more comprehensive user experience. This work proposed that the addition of auditory …

Hieroglyphs For The Information Age: Images As A Replacement For Characters For Languages Not Written In The Latin-1 Alphabet, Akira Hasegawa May 1999

Hieroglyphs For The Information Age: Images As A Replacement For Characters For Languages Not Written In The Latin-1 Alphabet, Akira Hasegawa

Theses

One of the biggest existing problems for international users and international companies is the difficulty of displaying web pages written in multiple languages. This thesis project demonstrates a solution in which the problems of text encoding are eliminated by representing all of the text on a page as a series of image files. The Japanese text on several Japanese web pages was converted into glyphs, which were defined as image files containing images of text. The glyphs were arranged on new web pages, so that the same Japanese text can be read by any web surfer, regardless of the operating …

Willard Espy, 1910-1999 May 1999

Willard Espy, 1910-1999

Word Ways

Willard Espy, wordplay's great and good friend, died in New York on February 20, 1999 at the age of 88. It is difficult to do justice to this many-faceted man in a short tribute. I first learned of him when he published his first wordplay book, The Game of Words, in 1972. I reviewed it in the August 1972 Word Ways, mildly chiding him for an inadequate index and the lack of up-to-date examples of transposals and word squares.

Wuthering Flapdocks! Yet More Bisograms, James Puder May 1999

Wuthering Flapdocks! Yet More Bisograms, James Puder

Word Ways

A word in which no two letters are the same is often called an isogram. In an article in the August 1998 Word Ways, Eric Chaikin coined the term bisogram to identify word pairs in which no letters occur more than once. High-quality bisograms are essentially defined as those which contain only uncapitalized unhyphenated unabbreviated words which are listed in boldface type in Webster's Third; appropriate noun
