Policy Analysis Of Wisconsin's Domestic Violence Mandatory Arrest Law, Holly C. Mcabee May 1999

Policy Analysis Of Wisconsin's Domestic Violence Mandatory Arrest Law, Holly C. Mcabee

Theses and Graduate Projects

This exploratory paper is an attempt to examine the factors that led to the criminalization of domestic violence. Beginning with an overview of the history of reform movements to end family violence, the report then reviews the factors that influenced the enactment of mandatory arrest policies in Wisconsin, as well as across the United States. The last sections critically examine existing research on the deterrent effects of arrest. Research suggests that arrest may have some deterrent effects on different offender subgroups, however, may be a relatively weak sanction and deterrent effects may be short term. The greatest point of intervention …

Using "Social Stories" To Enhance The Social And Behavior Skills Of Preschool Children With Autism Or Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Amy F. Wiesen May 1999

Using "Social Stories" To Enhance The Social And Behavior Skills Of Preschool Children With Autism Or Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Amy F. Wiesen

Theses and Dissertations

Autistic or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) children may exhibit impairments with communication skills, social skills, and cognitive skills. A treatment strategy called social stories may be an effective visual aid that provides individuals with autism/PDD accurate information regarding situations they encounter or skills they are working on. This thesis examined whether the use of social stories would increase the academic, social, and behavior skills of autistic/PDD children. A study was conducted over a three month period on three preschool students from the Bancroft Preschool. The purpose of writing a social story for each child was to teach the students to …

Using Haptic Vector Fields For Animation Motion Control, Bruce Randall Donald, Frederick Henle May 1999

Using Haptic Vector Fields For Animation Motion Control, Bruce Randall Donald, Frederick Henle

Computer Science Technical Reports

We are exploring techniques for animation authoring and editing using a haptic force-feedback device. In our system, a family of animations is encoded by a bundle of trajectories. This bundle in turn defines a time-varying, higher-order vector field on a configuration space for the animation. A haptic input device provides a low-dimensional parameterization of the resulting dynamical system, and the haptic force feedback permits browsing and editing of the space of animations, by allowing the user to experience the vector field as physical forces.

Plant And Soil Enantioselective Biodegradation Of Racemic Phenoxyalkanoic Herbicides, J. M. Schneiderheinze, Daniel W. Armstrong, Alain Berthod May 1999

Plant And Soil Enantioselective Biodegradation Of Racemic Phenoxyalkanoic Herbicides, J. M. Schneiderheinze, Daniel W. Armstrong, Alain Berthod

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The biodegradation of the chiral phenoxyalkanoic herbicides 2-(2,4- dichlorophenoxy)propionic aid (2,4-DP) and 2-(4-chloro-2- methylphenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP) was investigated using enantioselective HPLC and chiroptical detection. Racemic mixtures of 2,4-DP and MCPP were applied to three species of turf grass, four species of broadleaf weeds, and soil. Preferential degradation of the S- (-) enantiomer of each herbicide was observed in most species of broadleaf weeds and soil, while the degradation in all species of grass occurred without enantioselectivity. The biodegradation in all systems appeared to follow pseudo first-order kinetics with the fastest degradation occurring in broadleaf weeds, followed by the grasses. The …

Increasing Awareness Of Recycling Programs For Elementary Aged Children Through Interactive Multimedia, Ik-Dong Yu

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to create an effective interactive multimedia training method for elementary aged children, on recycling awareness. The age group chosen for this project is children 8 to 11. This report will focus on the goals and objectives of the project, the areas being researched and the procedure, along with the outcome of the project. In children's psychology, understanding of different stages of intellectual development of a child is critical. According to Piaget, "concrete operational thought is made up of operations-mental actions that allow children to do mentally what they had done physically before. Concrete operations …

Expression And Action Of Transforming Growth Factor Beta (Tgfβ1, Tgfβ2, And Tgfβ3) During Embryonic Rat Testis Development, Andrea S. Cupp, Grace Kim, Michael K. Skinner May 1999

Expression And Action Of Transforming Growth Factor Beta (Tgfβ1, Tgfβ2, And Tgfβ3) During Embryonic Rat Testis Development, Andrea S. Cupp, Grace Kim, Michael K. Skinner

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of the current study was to determine the role of transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) during seminiferous cord formation and embryonic testis development. The expression pattern of mRNA for TGFβ isoforms was evaluated during testis development through a quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (QRT-PCR) procedure. Expression of mRNA for TGFβ1 was highest at postnatal day 0 (P0) and P10. In contrast, TGFβ2 was high at embryonic day 15 (E15), declined at E16, and showed a transient increase at P0 through P3 of testis development. Interestingly, expression of mRNA for TGFβ3 was high during embryonic development and then …

Shades Of Meaning: Perspectives On The Visual Rhetoric Of Film Noir, Jill Shepherd May 1999

Shades Of Meaning: Perspectives On The Visual Rhetoric Of Film Noir, Jill Shepherd

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Alone in the kitchen now, Frank watches the hamburger on the grill. Distracted by a faint clunk - something has fallen - he turns, his gaze falling to the floor where a small white tube of lipstick rolls across angular shadows cast by the windows. His eye follows the path of the lipstick back to a white, open-toed pump, and up a pair of shapely legs, past a pair of white shorts and a midriff-baring top to the insolent lovely face of Cora. He picks up the lipstick and holds it in the palm of his hand; she looks at …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Instruction Program In Mathematics, Jennifer A. Laurrell-Klotz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to determine if participation in a year long mathematics direct instructional program would accelerate the rate of mathematical achievement in a group of learning disabled children. The subjects of this study were comprised of five eleven-year-old fifth grade students who were classified as Learning Disabled. Outcome measures utilized included teacher assigned report card grades, a basic skills test, a two-step word problem assessment and the Key Math Diagnostic Arithmetic Test-Revised as a functional measure.

The results of this study indicate that, when utilizing formal and functional measures, students make greater progress acquiring facts and …

Internet Filtering Vs. Unrestricted Access In Public Libraries And School Media Centers In Southern New Jersey, Elizabeth A. Sevast May 1999

Internet Filtering Vs. Unrestricted Access In Public Libraries And School Media Centers In Southern New Jersey, Elizabeth A. Sevast

Theses and Dissertations

Where do we stand as educators on the debate involving Internet filtering vs. unrestricted access? The focus of this study was to examine Internet access privileges in local public libraries and kindergarten through twelfth grade school media centers. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire sent to 100 randomly selected public library directors and school media center specialists throughout the eight counties in southern New Jersey. They were asked if their libraries offered Internet access and if filtering software had been installed on their Internet terminals. Other questions involved the successes and/or failures of implementing (or in not implementing) filters, …
