Study Of The Baig Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Michael David May 1999

Study Of The Baig Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Michael David

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recently, intestinal bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria have been implicated in cholesterol gallstone disease. Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708, a bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria, contains multiple bile acid inducible (bai) genes which are located on a large bai operon. Genes of this operon encode the enzymes responsible for bile acid 7α-dehydroxylation. The baiG gene encodes a bile acid transporter in Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708. Utilizing the polymerase chain reaction I determined the presence or absence of baiG-like genes in six bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating strains: Clostridium sp. Strain TN-271, Eubacterium sp. strain 1-10, Clostridium bifermentans strain 1-55, Clostridium sordellii strain Y67, …

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger May 1999

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Alternative calendar schools are increasingly popular alternatives to the traditional nine-month school year and a three-month summer vacation. One purported advantage of a shorter summer vacation is the greater retention of academic material because there is less time to "forget" what was learned. While alternative calendar schools appear to be increasing in number, little research has been conducted to actually measure academic differences in these schools. The purpose of this research was to systematically compare the retention of academic skills of students in traditional and alternative calendar schools over the summer months. Three county-wide school districts participated in this study. …

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary May 1999

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary

Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection

A 10-year riparian grazing study was conducted on a cold, mountain meadow riparian system in central Idaho in response to cattle grazing-salmonid fisheries conflicts. Six pastures were established along Stanley Creek to study the effects on riparian habitat of no grazing, light grazing (20-25% utilization), and medium grazing (35-50%) during late June. Stream channels narrowed, stream width-depth ratios were reduced, and channel bottom embeddedness decreased under all 3 grazing treatments as the area responded to changes from heavier historic grazing use. Streambank stability increased and streamside willow communities (Salix spp. L.) increased in both height and cover under all 3 …

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre May 1999

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This essay considers the way identity performances and theological claims of white Cuban theologians masks the long-historical racism that has haunted Cuban culture throughout its history. The author considers concerns among today’s Black Cubans that national reconciliation Miami-style may reimpose silence and secondarity upon them as citizens. They fear any attempt by exilic Cubans to radically change the present government in La Habana, lest it creates a one-way empowerment of White Cubans once again. True Cuban reconciliation must confront Cuban White supremacism. Otherwise national “reconciliation” would occur only among white Cubans on both sides of the Florida Straits, excluding Black …

Isolation, Cloning, And Identification Of Syringomycin E Action Genes Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Stephen D. Stock May 1999

Isolation, Cloning, And Identification Of Syringomycin E Action Genes Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Stephen D. Stock

Biology

Members of the syringomycin family of antifungal cyclic lipodepsipeptides are produced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae strains as secondary metabolites. These metabolites are potent antifungal agents effective against a broad range of fungi. The antifungal mechanism of action of these compounds has been investigated using syringomycin E and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model fungal system. Mutants resistant to the growth inhibitory effects of syringomycin E were isolated after mutagenesis with nitrosoguanidine. These mutants were screened for the production of ergosterol and by complementation with syr2 mutants to eliminate mutants belonging to known syringomycin E-resistant complementation groups. From a total of …

Estimating Total Body Fat In Sharp-Shinned And Cooper's Hawks: Techniques And Application, John P. Delong May 1999

Estimating Total Body Fat In Sharp-Shinned And Cooper's Hawks: Techniques And Application, John P. Delong

Biology

I evaluated the use of three direct methods (fat scoring, condition indices, and multiple regression of external morphological variables) and one indirect method to estimate total body fat (TBF) in Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) and Cooper's Hawks (A. cooperii). All three direct methods explained a reasonable amount of variation in actual TBF values (r2 ≥ 0.82), and all three methods required the use of four equations to account for the categories of species, age, and sex. Indirect methods are those that predict lean mass and subtract the lean mass estimate from the actual body …

Characteristics Of Bald Eagle Communal Roosts In Northern Utah And A Survey Of Eagles Occupying Roosts, Robert B. Wilson May 1999

Characteristics Of Bald Eagle Communal Roosts In Northern Utah And A Survey Of Eagles Occupying Roosts, Robert B. Wilson

Biology

The numbers of eagles occupying either the Willard Canyon roost or the Ogden Bay roost exceeded the combined total of other communal roosts documented in Utah. These roosts are among the largest known communal roosts in the lower 48 states, and the largest documented winter roosts within the McKenzie-Intermountain Flyway. During the winters of 1997-98 and 1998-99 I surveyed several Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) roost sites in northern Utah to document their geographic location, habitat, and occupancy. I conducted surveys from December 1997 to April 1998 and December 1998 to April 1999. Most winter roosts were communal, as …

Carnality In ‘El Matadero', Lee Joan Skinner May 1999

Carnality In ‘El Matadero', Lee Joan Skinner

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Esteban Echeverria's short story "El matadero" is generally acknowledged as a literary masterpiece in miniature. It is widely anthologized and has been called the inaugural work of Argentine short fiction, if not the first Latin American short story. Seymour Menton positions it as the first story in his influential anthology El cuento hispanoamericano and calls it "una verdadera obra de arte" (34); David William Foster refers to it as "the founding text of Argentine fiction" (Sexual Textualities 135). Although the story has been popularly and critically acclaimed, it also presents certain problems for its readers. Written by an avowed Romantic, …

Analysis Of Fats And Fat-Soluble Components In Foods Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction And Chromatographic Techniques, Sneha Patel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop experimental procedures for the extraction of fats from common foods using SFE and to determine by chromatographic techniques the fat-soluble components that are extracted with the fats. In this study various food samples were examined including french fries from Wendy's, McDonald's and Burger King, as well as potato chips, peanut butter and donuts. Soxtec extraction was used as the standard method for comparison of results (percentage of fat) obtained from SFE. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were used for the determination of fat-soluble components (fatty acids), after extraction of fat from …

Further Saith Naught, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Among professions, the law is one most bound by tradition. Not only does the law look back in time for substantive precedents, it also borrows heavily from the language of the past. Do words like "notwithstanding" and "herein" creep their way unnoticed into your legal documents? Do your affidavits contain an "ss" at the top and use alliterative wording such as "subscribed, sworn, and sealed"? These antiquated expressions are not used in standard Modem English, and before you entered law school, they probably were familiar only if you read Old or Middle English literature. To help determine which are expendable, …

An Application Of Hirschi's Theory Of Social Control To The Study Of Partner Abuse, Barbara Fellows May 1999

An Application Of Hirschi's Theory Of Social Control To The Study Of Partner Abuse, Barbara Fellows

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if Hirschi's theory of social control could be applied to domestic violence. Two elements of Hirschi's theory of social control, attachment and beliefs, were used as the independent variables. The Conflict Tactics Scale was used to measure the dependent variables of directed non-contact violence and directed contact violence. Data was collected on 200 cohabiting heterosexual males. Half of these males were in court-ordered counseling programs, the other half belonged to civic or religious organizations. Crosstabulations were used to analyze the data. The Chi-square test of independence was used with an alpha level …

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil May 1999

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Although horses have laterally-placed eyes, there is substantial binocular overlap, allowing for the possibility that these animals have stereopsis. In the first experiment of the present study we measured local stereopsis by obtaining monocular and binocular depth thresholds for renal depth stimuli. On all measures, the horses' binocular performance was superior to their monocular. When depth thresholds were obtained, binocular thresholds were several times superior to those obtained monocularly, suggesting that the animals could use stereoscopic information when it was available. The binocular thresholds averaged about 15 min arc. In the second experiment we obtained evidence for the presence of …

The Interspecificity Of Distress Calls, A. T. Baxter, J. C. Bell, J. R. Allan, J. Fairclough May 1999

The Interspecificity Of Distress Calls, A. T. Baxter, J. C. Bell, J. R. Allan, J. Fairclough

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

It is widely accepted that birds respond best to distress calls given by their own species. There is little information available however, which evaluates the effect of inter and intraspecific distress calls. During 1997 and 1998, distress calls from sub populations which are unfamiliar to local birds of the same species were assessed in Hong Kong and the U.K. Results were examined on a taxonomic basis. Response was found to be greater when con-specific calls were used. Response rates declined further as taxonomic relatedness decreased. Unlike other studies, distress calls of UK birds were effective on the same species in …

Recent Developments In The Use Of Flight Control To Repel Birds From Airports, Kenneth E. Ballinger Jr., Michael K. Gilmore, Rebecca W. Price May 1999

Recent Developments In The Use Of Flight Control To Repel Birds From Airports, Kenneth E. Ballinger Jr., Michael K. Gilmore, Rebecca W. Price

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Birds found at or near airport flight operations pose a threat to aircraft. There were 2843 reported bird strikes in the United States in 1997 and 837 reported bird strikes in Canada for the year 1998. Potential for loss of life and economic losses due to aircraft damage have driven the need for research into effective techniques in lowering the risk of bird strike in the immediate area of flight operations. Flight ControlÔ is a documented bird repellent. Flight ControlÔ was released commercially in January 1999 in the United States for use on turf, ornamental trees and bushes, building surfaces …

Integrated Management Systems For Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis Molucca) On The Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Phillip P. Shaw May 1999

Integrated Management Systems For Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis Molucca) On The Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Phillip P. Shaw

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Fueled by a large supplemental food supply at landfills in South-east Queensland, Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) populations grew from an estimated 5000 to 10000 between 1995 and 1998. Ibis counted at Coolangatta Airport reflected this growth with a 556% increase between 1989 and 1995. The multimillion-dollar loss of a Qantas airbus engine from ingestion of an Ibis, resulted in the establishment of the Ibis Management Coordination Group (IMCG). This group, comprising government, industry and community representatives, instigated an integrated program of food reduction, restriction of breeding success and public education. The program has become an example for management programs …

Complete Control Of Nuisance Birds In Airport Hangars, Peter F. Vogt May 1999

Complete Control Of Nuisance Birds In Airport Hangars, Peter F. Vogt

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Fogging of ReJeX-iT7 TP-40 offers a very efficient method for the control and dispersal of nuisance birds from many diverse areas. The amount of the repellent is greatly reduced over any other control method. The method is direct and is independent of the activity of the birds. The applications with any fogger, thermal or mechanical, that can deliver droplets of less than 20 microns, can be manually or fully automated and pose only minimal risks to operators or animals. All birds that became a nuisance and safety problem in the hangars of TWA and AA at LaGuardia, and TWA warehouse …

Coping Strategies For The Aircraft Birdstrike Problem: Resisting Impacts, Avoiding Collisions, And …, R. J. Speelman Iii, M. E. Kelley, R. E. Mccarty, J. J. Short May 1999

Coping Strategies For The Aircraft Birdstrike Problem: Resisting Impacts, Avoiding Collisions, And …, R. J. Speelman Iii, M. E. Kelley, R. E. Mccarty, J. J. Short

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

When birds and aircraft occupy the same airspace at the same time, bad things happen. Annual DoD costs probably exceed $200 Million per year, and dollar losses to world-wide aviation have been estimated at $3 Billion to $4 Billion per year (in US dollars). Much has been done in the past to improve the bird impact resistance of aircraft, and some further improvements would be cost effective on some aircraft. A new manufacturing technology for aircraft transparencies that can increase strength while slashing costs by 80% is one promising approach. However, the “law of diminishing returns” comes into play, and …

Bird Strike Risk Analysis On Aktion Airfield (Greece) And Recommendations For Improvements In Bird Strike Prevention, Heinrich Weitz May 1999

Bird Strike Risk Analysis On Aktion Airfield (Greece) And Recommendations For Improvements In Bird Strike Prevention, Heinrich Weitz

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

A survey of Aktion airfield in Greece was carried out from 14 to 18 October 1996 initiated by the Flight Safety Division of the NATO E-3A Component Geilenkirchen (Germany) as an reaction to the accident of an AWACS-aircraft on 14. July 1996, initially caused by a bird strike event. The survey of Aktion airfield led to the conclusion that the bird strike risk is extremely high at this airfield. Reasons are:
· The geographical location of the airfield at the Adriatic coast which is a migratory pathway for many birds.
· The location of the airfield on a narrow peninsula …
