The Rise And Fall Of African American Midwifery In The South, Nicole M. Bernard Jul 1999

The Rise And Fall Of African American Midwifery In The South, Nicole M. Bernard

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give insight into the role played by the African American midwife in the rural south, including Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The African American midwife was responsible for prenatal care, delivery, and a certain degree of postnatal care for the mother and the infant. During slavery, she was all that the slaves had. The African American midwife also aided in delivery of some of the whites as well in a time when blacks were considered to be no more than animals. This proves that the African American midwife was more than a savage …

Different Proctolin Neurons Elicit Distinct Motor Patterns From A Multifunctional Neuronal Network, Dawn M. Blitz, Andrew E. Christie, Melissa J. Coleman, Brian J. Norris, Eve Marder, Michael P. Nusbaum

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Distinct motor patterns are selected from a multifunctional neuronal network by activation of different modulatory projection neurons. Subsets of these projection neurons can contain the same neuromodulator(s), yet little is known about the relative influence of such neurons on network activity. We have addressed this issue in the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab Cancer borealis. Within this system, there is a neuronal network in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) that produces many versions of the pyloric and gastric mill rhythms. These different rhythms result from activation of different projection neurons that innervate the STG from neighboring ganglia and modulate STG …

Development And The African Philosophical Debate, Messay Kebede Jul 1999

Development And The African Philosophical Debate, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The split of African philosophical thinking between the schools of ethnophilosophy and professional philosophy shows the involvement of philosophical issues in the African development process. Indeed, the philosophical debate does no more than revive the entrenched paradigm of development theories, namely the conflict between tradition and modernity. While ethnophilosophy thinks that the rehabilitation of African traditions conditions the drive to successful modernization, especially after the disparaging discourse of colonialism, professional philosophy is of the opinion that success depends on the exchange of the traditional culture for modern ideas and institutions. The article exposes and evaluates the major arguments developed by …

Natural Resources Conservation Laws: A Report On 17 States And Their Selected Counties And Townships, Huong N. Tran, Liu-Hsiung Chuang, Carolyne L. Guss, Resource Economics And Social Sciences Division, Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Department Of Agriculture

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Laws are social institutions that guide social functions, declare social programs, and even project the visions of a governed society. In a democracy like the United States of America, laws exist at every level of government. Federal, state, and local agencies that have related missions work together as partners, and their staffs need to understand the legal requirements and limitations to better serve the constituents. Private citizens can also benefit from being aware of the laws of other jurisdictions that might serve as models for improving their laws and regulations. With this awareness the public spirit can be enhanced and …
