Fisheries Research Report No. 111 - Sea Temperature Variability Off Western Australia 1990 To 1994, Alan Pearce, Mark Rossbach, Marion Tait, Rhys Brown Jul 1999

Fisheries Research Report No. 111 - Sea Temperature Variability Off Western Australia 1990 To 1994, Alan Pearce, Mark Rossbach, Marion Tait, Rhys Brown

Fisheries Research Reports

Analysis of temperature data from coastal waters between Shark Bay and Cape Mentelle has shown the main features of temporal and spatial variability in temperature along the Western Australian coastline. Three distinct periods of variability emerge: the annual cycle (peak temperatures generally in January-February and troughs in July-August), a few-day (weatherrelated) cycle, and the diurnal pattern.

Summer temperatures range from 24° C (South Passage) to 19° C (Cape Mentelle), and winter temperatures from 21° C (South Passage) to 16° C (Marmion). Mean annual temperature ranges (winter minimum to summer maximum) are between 3° C (South Passage) and 7° C (Alkimos), …

Transfer Of Lacz Marker Gene To The Meniscus, Hideyuki Goto Md, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd, Chanin Lamsam Md, Hans D. Moller Md, Christopher Niyibizi Phd, Freddie H. Fu Md, Paul D. Robbins Phd, Christopher H. Evans Phd

Orthopaedics

Background: Lesions in the avascular two-thirds of the meniscus do not heal well and are of concern clinically. Various growth factors promote the synthesis of matrix by meniscal cells and thus have the potential to augment healing. However, their clinical application is severely hindered by problems with delivery. An attractive approach to overcoming such problems is to transfer genes that encode the growth factors in question to the site of the injury. As a prelude to this, we evaluated methods for delivering genes to the meniscus.

Methods: Gene transfer was evaluated in vitro and in vivo with a lacZ marker …

Against Arbitrariness: Architectural Signification In The Age Of Globalization, Rumiko Handa Jul 1999

Against Arbitrariness: Architectural Signification In The Age Of Globalization, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The theory of arbitrary signification, predominant during the last half century, considers architecture’s intrinsic properties as having little to do with its meaning. Consequently, architecture’s significance is not based on itself but assigned externally. In the age of globalization, such an assignment is often ineffective. This paper will: (1) examine the post-WWII debates between the theories of arbitrary and natural signification; (2) relate these theories to more philosophical, historicist vs. normative positions; (3) discuss the implications concerning conservation of culture, legitimacy of interpretation, and fake authenticity in construction; (4) and examine some architectural works that have brought forth natural signification …

Identifying A Need For The Development Of A Culturally Based Leadership Program For The Native American Ho-Chunk Youth, Charity Thunder Jul 1999

Identifying A Need For The Development Of A Culturally Based Leadership Program For The Native American Ho-Chunk Youth, Charity Thunder

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study explores the need for a culturally based leadership program to help the Native American Ho-Chunk youth become effective leaders in their communities. There are but a few studies done on Native American leadership so I have chiefly relied on the empirical evidence collected from several Summer Ho-Chunk Youth Leadership Conferences. As a result, learning the Hocak language was identified as being critical to keeping the culture and traditions alive.

We proceed to do this in four parts. We begin with the statement of the problem. Secondly, we define and clarify terms such as: American Indian, tribe, vision, sovereignty, …

The Effect Of Familiarity On Social Interactions Between Captive Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes) And Jumans (Homo Sapiens), Bonita Aline King

Master of Psychology Theses

The responses of five captive chimpanzees to 16 familiar and 16 unfamiliar humans were examined. The chimpanzees' responses were recorded and analyzed for directed attention, proximity, levels and recipients of arousal behaviors, latency of response and use of American Sign Language (ASL). With the exceptions of closer proximity associated with familiars and increased ASL use with familiars, results were statistically nonsignificant. This may have been because the unfamiliar humans were instructed to maintain a submissive and noninteractive posture during the trials. Trends within the results indicated that the unique behaviors of the individual human are more important than familiarity alone. …

Faculty Publications

Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will …

A Correlation Study Of Learning Preferences And Attitudes Towards Computers In Fourth Grade Students, Laura C. Garofalo

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if specific learning style preferences were related to fourth grade elementary students' attitudes towards computers in the classroom. Subjects were twenty-six students in a fourth grade class in an affluent suburban district. Subjects were given two self-report instruments to measure their learning style preferences and attitudes towards computers. The Learning Combination Inventory (LCI), developed by Dr. Christine Johnston of Rowan University, was used to determine learning style preferences. The Technology Attitude Assessment Survey (TAAS), developed for the University of the State of New York, measured attitudes towards computer usage in the classroom. …

Japanese Brome Impacts On Western Wheatgrass In Northern Great Plains Rangelands: An Update, M. R. Haferkamp, R. K. Heitschmidt

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Japanese brome (Bromus japonicas Thunb.) is an annual grass that has invaded thousands of hectares of Northern Great Plains rangelands. We studied the effect of Japanese brome on the current year's increase in biomass in a plant community in the Northern Great Plains dominated by western wheatgrass [Pascopyrum smithii Rydb. (Love)]. In our experiment, brome seedlings were either removed or left in place in replicated l-m2 plots. Above-ground biomass of western wheatgrass increased (891 to 1,095 kg ha-1 ) with the removal of Japanese brome. However, total above-ground biomass decreased (1,873 to 1,334 kg ha-1 …
