Exotic Policy: An Ijc White Paper On Policies For The Prevention Of The Invasion Of The Great Lakes By Exotic Organisms, Eric Reeves

About ten years ago, the Great Lakes environmental community initiated the first action to counteract the worldwide spread of exotic organisms in ballast water. In 1988, in response to the discovery of the ruffe and the zebra mussel in the Great Lakes, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the International Joint Commission called upon the Canadian and United States Governments to act. In 1989, Canada issued the first voluntary ballast exchange guidelines. In 1990, the United States passed the first major piece of legislation on aquatic nuisance species, mandating consultations and studies on all pathways for aquatic invasions. And in …

Laser Skin Graft Harvesting Apparatus And Related Method, David S. Kirn

A laser dermatome is disclosed for harvesting and meshing grafts of skin. A roller driven by a motor lifts the leading edge of a portion of skin for cutting by a beam of light generated by a laser. Adhesive tape attached to the roller aids in lifting the portion of skin and is further utilized to secure the severed portion of skin to the roller. A stage mounted atop an axle supports the laser or a beam director. The movement of the stage is controlled by second and third motors which drive the stage along or rotate it about the …

Jean Stickney came out as gay in 1969 at the age of 29. Shortly after moving to Maine in 1973, she became involved with the Wilde-Stein Club, a gay and lesbian group at UMaine Orono that was instrumental in holding the first Maine Gay Symposium. Stickney went on to become involved with the Maine Lesbian Feminist (MLF) group, where she helped create the MLF newsletter, which included essays and poems as well as announcements about events that women would be interested in. She also helped provide workshops on parenting, alcohol addiction, and lesbian massage. After MLF became a …

A method of reducing corneal scarring or fibroblast proliferation comprises applying to an area of a subject's eye afflicted with the condition a corneal scar-fibroblast proliferation-reducing amount of a free or polymer-bound HLE inhibitory agent under conditions and for a period of time effective to attain the desired effect. A method of reducing neovascularization of corneal scar tissue comprises applying to an area of a subject's eye afflicted with the condition a neovascularization-inhibitory amount of a free or polymer-bound HLE inhibitory agent under conditions and for a period of time effective to attain the desired effect.

Recent IMSA graduate Keith Winstein of Oak Park spent part of his summer doing something quite unconventional for an 18-year-old.

Winstein was the only student in a group of 11 official United States delegates to attend the first World Conference on Science (WCS) in Budapest, Hungary, from June 26 to July 1. The conference brought together 2,500 scientists from 150 countries.
