Building “A Home Of Our Own:” The Construction Of The Lesbian Herstory Archives, Polly Thistlethwaite
Building “A Home Of Our Own:” The Construction Of The Lesbian Herstory Archives, Polly Thistlethwaite
Publications and Research
This article traces the founding of the Lesbian Herstory Archives in the context of radical archiving and lesbian institution building. It includes an outline of problems presented by "extra-legal" or outlaw material in archival settings. Discussion of the New York Public Library's Becoming Visible exhibit reflects the 1990s growth of mainstream institutional interest in gay, lesbian, and transgender archives, and the complications this interest presents.

As a high school student I would have never dreamt that I would be in a profession as an educator. I had my life mapped out, nursing school and then gaining specialized training in the area of pediatrics. l should have known that college would open doors. In my sophomore year of college, I stood in front of the mirror in my dorm room and asked myself, "What do you really want to do with your life?" It was then when my heart answered me, a teacher. From that point forward, education has been my passion and life blood. It …
The Basics Of Teaching Media Literacy, Jill Wurzer
The Basics Of Teaching Media Literacy, Jill Wurzer
Graduate Research Papers
According to the Media Literacy Online Project (1998), American children and adolescents spend 22-28 hours a week viewing television. By the time today's children reach age 70, they will have spent 7-10 years watching television. Now, more than ever, schools are being called on to deal with the effects of the growing influence of the media in students' lives. Media literacy and media education are even getting attention in the English Language Arts Standards by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). So, what is media literacy? What materials are available to teach it, and how can teachers justify …
Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti
Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti
Graduate Research Papers
Analyses of the deployment of technology in schools have tended to note its failure to affect the daily values and practices of teachers and students. This absence is generally regarded as an implementation failure, or as resulting from some temperamental shortcoming on the part of the teachers or technologists. Such a construction is predicated on the assumption that the technology is value free and its implementation a struggling playing field. This paper proposes that no instructional technology is ever neutral. Its value and practices must support the organization into which it is placed. The failures of technology to look and …
Classroom Discussion: A Journey To Decentralizing The Classroom, Mike Suther
Classroom Discussion: A Journey To Decentralizing The Classroom, Mike Suther
Graduate Research Papers
Throughout history of the United States, teachers have instigated classroom discussion about text in hopes that talk enhanced understanding. More recently, Vygotsky (1978) produced evidence of the importance of social talk in learning. It is through this social interaction or discussion that students construct and negotiate meaning of text. What constitutes social interaction or discussion is what leads some teachers to disagree. The literature on discussion has classified it into two types: recitation and discussion.

Sexual Dis-Orientation: Transgendered People And Same-Sex Marriage, Mary I. Coombs
Sexual Dis-Orientation: Transgendered People And Same-Sex Marriage, Mary I. Coombs
Articles
In this Article, Professor Coombs argues that the debate about same-sex marriage has wrongfully ignored transgendered people and their relationships. She provides an overview of arguments made by opponents of same-sex marriage, such as tradition, procreation, child-rearing, and family values. She then examines cases involving transsexual marriages and uses this analysis to deconstruct the same-sex marriage debate. Professor Coombs argues that an honest consideration of transgendered people and their relationships forces a re-evaluation of arguments against same-sex marriage and disrupts the gendered patriarchy on which traditional marriage rests. Marriage should be seen as a relationship between two people, regardless of …

A Complex-Systems Perspective On The “Computation Vs. Dynamics” Debate In Cognitive Science, Melanie Mitchell
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
I review the purported opposition between computational and dynamical approaches in cognitive science. I argue that both computational and dynamical notions will be necessary for a full explanatory account of cognition, and give a perspective on how recent research in complex systems can lead to a much needed rapprochement between computational and dynamical styles of explanation.

This Essay was originally prepared for a panel on transitional justice entitled "Justice, Amnesty, and Truth-Telling: Options for Societies in Transition," American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division, convention (Atlanta, Dec. 1996).
Can a society be repaired unless its killers, rapists, and torturers are named and exposed? Can it be repaired if its killers, rapists, and torturers are named and exposed? That is the overarching question of transitional justice; it may even be the overarching question of life in human society. Just as no relationship can survive in the complete absence of truth, no relationship can survive in the complete absence of …

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigated within-source interrater reliability of supervisor, peer, and subordinate feedback ratings made for managerial development. Raters provided 360-degree feedback ratings on a sample of 153 managers. Using generalizability theory, results indicated that little within-source agreement exists; a large portion of the error variance is attributable to the combined rater main effect and Rater X Ratee effect; more raters are needed than currently used to reach acceptable levels of reliability; supervisors are the most reliable with trivial differences between peers and subordinates when the numbers of raters and items are held constant; and peers are the most reliable, followed …

In Australia when we think of mediationtraining, we generally envisage a four orfive day training course run by amediation service provider or educationalinstitution. Many Australian universitiesalso offer postgraduate studies inmediation and ADR which generallyprovide a combination of theory and skillsdevelopment subjects. Such studiestypically take the form of postgraduatediplomas or Masters degrees offered by auniversity department or a multi-disciplinarymediation centre. Notably, there are norequirements that participants haveprevious qualifications or experience inmediation. One direct effect of this ‘open’policy has been to lower the standard ofpostgraduate teaching and learning in thisfield. For example, postgraduate subjectsin mediation in many law schools aroundthe country offer …

Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan
Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
A study examined the effects of individual differences and situational characteristics on individuals' use of 6 job loss coping strategies among laid-off industrial workers. In each case the predictors explained a significant portion of the variance (30%-47%) although different predictors were significantly associated with each of the 6 coping strategies. The results also suggest that the use of problem-focused and symptom-focused coping strategies are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.
To Cherish A Just And Lasting Peace, Gerry Adams
To Cherish A Just And Lasting Peace, Gerry Adams
Fordham International Law Journal
In the opening line of the diary that he kept during the first three weeks of his hunger strike, republican prisoner Bobby Sands, who died after fifty-five days on strike, wrote: "I am standing on the threshold of another trembling world." This system has created a unionist one party state that has rejected basic principles of democracy, justice, and equality. Throughout the development of our peace strategy and the talks process, republicans pursued the peace process in the context of our republican analysis of the situation and with a solid strategy to meet all of the difficulties head on. In …
Peace Agreement - Or Last Piece In A Sellout Agreement?, Ian Paisley
Peace Agreement - Or Last Piece In A Sellout Agreement?, Ian Paisley
Fordham International Law Journal
Indeed, it is the distress caused by the content of the Agreement that has provoked such widespread alarm and division within Unionism. The proposals contained in the Agreement are not remarkably new in content, but they now have the endorsement of those who were previously opposed to such mechanisms that will fundamentally undermine the status of Northern Ireland within the Union and impose a system of government so alien that it is far removed from any known concept of democracy and fairness. According to the author's copy of the Mitchell draft, the UUP lost out on the number of seats …
Documentary Credit Law And Practice In The Global Information Age, Jacqueline D. Lipton
Documentary Credit Law And Practice In The Global Information Age, Jacqueline D. Lipton
Fordham International Law Journal
Documentary letters of credit have historically been an important and popular method of payment in international trading transactions. In fact, they have been described as the "lifeblood of international commerce." A number of uniform international practices have developed for their use, many of which are codified in international rules such as Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits. In the global information age, as the nature of international commerce changes, so too must the operation of such payment mechanisms. With the increase in electronic trading, the "documentary" nature of these credits may require some revision. This Essay examines ways in …

Removing Drug Lords And Street Pushers: The Extradition Of Nationals In Colombia And The Dominican Republic, Joshua H. Warmund
Fordham International Law Journal
This Comment explores the interplay between drug trafficking and extradition policy in the U.S.-Latin American-Caribbean region by focusing upon the recent legal shift in Colombia and the Dominican Republic. Part I describes the status of current international extradition law, focusing on modern extradition policy. In particular, this part details the respective extradition treaties of Colombia and the Dominican Republic with the United States. Part I also explores the roles that these two nations assume trafficking drugs into the United States and highlights the corresponding U.S. anti-drug enforcement response. Finally, Part I examines the challenges that drug trafficking and certain anti-drug …
Making Concrete Less Abstract, David Newton Richardson
Making Concrete Less Abstract, David Newton Richardson
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
CE 3 13 is a second level properties of concrete lecture course. In an effort to make it appear less abstract to the students, over the course of several semesters several learning strategies were tried, including journaling, muddiest point, entering the academy, role playing, bookends-on-a-lecture, and hands-on lab projects. Most recently, an emphasis on short writing-to-learn papers, a problems-based stance, and an integrated lab project was used. Student evaluations indicated that the lab projects and the increased writing was of significant benefit in promotion of learning.
