The Effects Of Cocaine And Morphine On Avoidance Responding At Different Levels Of Food Deprivation., Michael Phillip Layng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three rats deprived to 80% of free-feeding weight pressed a bar to avoid electric shock in a Sidman avoidance procedure (20 s R-S interval, 5 s S-S interval). Once responding became stable, two of the rats were reduced to 70% of free feeding weight and one rat’s weight was increased to 95%. Cocaine (10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0 mg/kg), morphine (5.6, 10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0) and saline were tested in a random series with multiple determinations. Rate of responding and avoidance proficiency were recorded. When the injection series was completed the rats were free-fed and their weights redetermined so that the …

Development Of A Systems Approach To Planning, Design And Operations Of Intermodal Passenger Transfer Facilities To Increase The Mobility And Safety Of Older Travelers., Mohammad Anwarul Karim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

America, as a society, is aging. Currently, 13% of the population is 65 years of age or older. This percentage is expected to rise to 21% by 2030. Since older travelers frequently suffer from one or more age-related physical and/or information handling decrements, they often have problems using intermodal passenger transfer facilities. The overall goal of this study was to develop a framework which can provide an approach to identify older traveler issues associated with intermodal passenger transfer facilities and serve to guide planning and engineering improvements to intermodal passenger transfer facilities to increase the safety and mobility of older …

The Relationships Among Teacher Characteristics, Student Learning, And Teacher Evaluation., Jason John Teven Jan 1998

The Relationships Among Teacher Characteristics, Student Learning, And Teacher Evaluation., Jason John Teven

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The past several decades have witnessed an increasing concern with the role of communication in the instructional environment. The primary purpose of this research was to identify the specific teacher characteristics or behavior patterns which communicate caring to students and to identify those teacher characteristics or "misbehaviors" that disrupt the students' perceptions of caring. This investigation demonstrated that teacher immediacy and the teacher traits of socio-communicator style (e.g., assertiveness and responsiveness) and tolerance for disagreement have a significant, positive relationships with students' perceptions of teacher caring, learning outcomes, and the way students evaluate those teachers. Respondents in the study were …

Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Eating Behaviors, And Eating Attitudes Among Female Collegiate Swimmers, Melissa Ann Fey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between self-esteem and eating behaviors/attitudes among female collegiate swimmers. Specifically, the relationship between self-esteem as measured by the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) and eating behaviors/attitudes as measured by the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) (Gamer, Olmstead. Bohr. & Garfinkle. 1982) was determined for a purposive sample of female collegiate swimmers at the University of Northern Iowa. A total of 24 subjects completed self-report measures on self-esteem and eating behaviors/attitudes. Subjects' Body Mass Index was also assessed. Pearson product-moment correlation was used to examine the relationship among the scores on the Rosenburg …

Searching For Evidence Of Transfer Between Drug Facilitators., Mark Aaron Miller Jan 1998

Searching For Evidence Of Transfer Between Drug Facilitators., Mark Aaron Miller

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Four experiments were conducted to test whether transfer of stimulus control could be obtained between two drug facilitators, a drug and non-drug facilitator, and two non-drug facilitators. In the first experiment, the presence of methadone signaled which of two key lights would be followed by grain. In the absence of methadone, the contingencies were reversed. Concurrently, the presence of phencyclidine (PCP) signaled which of two additional key lights would be followed by grain. In the absence PCP, the contingencies were also reversed. During transfer tests in which each conditioned stimulus (CS) was presented following administration of each drug facilitator, only …

Emotional Hijacking Versus Safe Behavior., Christopher Monteressi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research investigated the types of reasoning used by coal mine employees when exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Information was gathered through interviews of coal miners who related actual experiences in the coal mines. The information in the interviews and in the review of the literature was used to develop and implement an experiential program that promoted an individual's responsibility for their safety and the safety of co-workers. The experiential program addressed safe work behaviors from the perspectives of emotional and cognitive memories and the functions of the human brain. This program had three overall objectives of assisting miners to …

Edward Alsworth Ross In Chicago, Michael R. Hill Jan 1998

Edward Alsworth Ross In Chicago, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

THE NAMES “Edward A. Ross” and “Chicago sociology” are not usually linked today in sociological accounts of the discipline, but the connections are nonetheless tangible. Ross’s work at Stanford, Nebraska, and Wisconsin is, perhaps, better known (Hertzler 1951; Hill forthcoming; Hinkle 1980; Howard 1988; Keith 1988; Weinberg 1972) and has overshadowed Ross’ ties to Chicago. The “symposium” presented below in this issue of SOCIOLOGICAL ORIGINS celebrates Ross’ place in Chicago sociology.

The record shows that Ross taught briefly in 1896 as a Visiting Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago, lectured informally to the University of Chicago Sociological Club, …

What Is Learned About Nontarget Items In Simple Visual Search?, John H. Flowers, Karen L. Smith Jan 1998

What Is Learned About Nontarget Items In Simple Visual Search?, John H. Flowers, Karen L. Smith

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Human sensitivity to correlational structure between nontargets and likelihood of target presence in a visual letter-search task were studied in two experiments. In each of these experiments, the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information was altered in the final trial block was compared with the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information did not change. When stimulus strings were presented individually on a computer screen and subjects were required to make a yes–no decision about target presence (Experiment 1), the change in nontarget structure resulted in increased reaction times for target-absent trials. When subjects searched simultaneously for …

Holistic Faculty Development: Supporting Personal, Professional, And Organizational Well-Being, Glenda T. Hubbard, Sally S. Atkins, Kathleen T. Brinko

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In recent years, higher education has begun to realize the great influence that faculty quality of life has on student learning and on overall institutional effectiveness. This article examines the interactive effect of personal, professional, and organizational well-being and describes a center that integrates four kinds of services-faculty development, employee assistance, health promotion, and organizational development-that work both separately and collaboratively. The result is a synergistic organization that is able to tackle complex institutional problems that could not be addressed by any one program alone.

Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki Jan 1998

Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The fortunes of faculty development centers rise and fall on the waves of change that roll through postsecondary education on a regular basis. These waves can swamp us, or we can ride their crest. This article points out some of the waves the author sees now and in the immediate future and how we can benefit from them. She ends with a caution about improving our chances of survival through our own efforts rather than waiting for someone else to draw us along.

Review Of Settling The Canadian-American West, 1890- 1915: Pioneer Adaptation And Community Building By John W. Bennett And Seena B. Kohl, Catherine Cavanaugh Jan 1998

Review Of Settling The Canadian-American West, 1890- 1915: Pioneer Adaptation And Community Building By John W. Bennett And Seena B. Kohl, Catherine Cavanaugh

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Settling the Canadian-American West, anthropologists John W. Bennett and Seena B. Kohl focus on the common cultural legacy of what they describe as the "Canadian-American West Heartland"-an area roughly conforming to Paul Sharp's "Whoop-up Country" in southeastern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan, and the northern "Montana Hi-Line." The authors' question concerning the enduring influences of the frontier is an important one, and there are historiographical reasons for uniting the region. Unfortunately, this study ultimately disappoints.

The book's title is misleading since the study itself is less a binational approach to settlement than an exploration of the shared heritage of a …

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay Jan 1998

Review Of Wild Bill Hickok: The Man And His Myth By Joseph G. Rosa, Thomas Dunlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, became one of the great representative mythological figures of the American West in his own lifetime and remains so today, well over a hundred years after his death. Some decades ago Joseph G. Rosa wrote the definitive biography of the famous gunfighter and peace officer. His present book, not so much a biography as an examination of the myths that have grown up around the man, compares the different facets of the legendary Hickok with the facts so far as they are known.

Hickok first gained fame for his exploits as a …

Psychological And Physiological Causes And Consequences Of The Female Athlete Triad In Distance Runners, Patricia Sue Vincent Jan 1998

Psychological And Physiological Causes And Consequences Of The Female Athlete Triad In Distance Runners, Patricia Sue Vincent

Graduate Research Papers

This paper was developed in order to identify psychological and physiological causes and consequences of the female athlete triad in distance runners. The most serious conditions of the female athlete triad are eating disorders, menstrual disorders, and bone disorders. Psychological factors have been implicated as the primary cause of disordered eating among this group of athletes. The disordered eating of a female distance runner can set off a sequence of physical health problems. An energy deficit, typical in endurance runners with eating difficulties, coupled with intense exercise training, may lead to lower reproductive hormones in the blood, amenorrhea, and reduced …

A Pernicious Problem: The Absence Of Women From Administrative Roles, Marilyn Grady, Barbara Lacost, Frederick C. Wendel, Bernita Krumm

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

In 1972 Title IX, the vaccine against gender inequity, was unveiled. Title IX is a federal law making sex discrimination in schools illegal. Under Title IX, sex bias is outlawed in school athletics, career counseling, medical services, financial aid, admission practices, and the treatment of students. In 1974, Congress passed the Women's Educational Equity Act to fund research, materials, and training to help schools eliminate gender bias. In 1978, Congress broadened the Civil Rights Act to include educational services to eliminate gender bias. Under the redesigned civil rights legislation, ten sex desegregation assistance centers were created to assist teachers, parents, …

Informed Consent In Mediation: A Guiding Principle For Truly Educated Decisionmaking , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley Jan 1998

Informed Consent In Mediation: A Guiding Principle For Truly Educated Decisionmaking , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley

Faculty Scholarship

Informed consent has a central role to play in mediation. Without it, mediation's promises of autonomy and self-determination are empty. This Article has given the theoretical and policy justifications for a reform of mediation practice that honors the principle of informed consent. I have argued for a contextualized approach that takes into account mediation's location, the voluntariness of the parties' consent, and their representational status. This kind of analysis will lead to a more informed practice of mediation decisionmaking than exists currently and provide a perspective that can more prudently guide a mediator's conduct. The proposed approach promotes greater fairness …

Lawyering In The State Of Nature: Instinct And Automaticity In Legal Problem Solving , Ian Weinstein Jan 1998

Lawyering In The State Of Nature: Instinct And Automaticity In Legal Problem Solving , Ian Weinstein

Faculty Scholarship

This article explains why lawyers do not think or talk like other people, how they got this way, and why this is both a good thing and a bad thing. I have watched hundreds of law students leave their old ways of thinking and talking behind and begin to sound like lawyers. One marker of the progress from lay person to lawyer is the emergence of the ability to tell a coherent fact and law story about a new legal problem. I have sometimes celebrated this professional progress and sometimes lamented the loss of common sense, but my lawyerly analysis …
