Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard
Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard
History Faculty Publications (Archived)
Schiffer (1996) recently proposed that, despite some incompatibilities, considerable common ground exists between behavioral archaeology and evolutionary or selectionist, archaeology. He concludes that there is no fundamental reason why the two approaches cannot work in concert to explain human behavioral change. There are, however, several important reasons why the two programs, at least as currently conceived, cannot work together in any thoroughly integrated fashion. Although both programs employ inference, behavioral archaeology conflates the distinct roles of configurational and immanent properties, searches for nomothetic answers to questions about human behavior, overlooks historical contingency when inferring and explaining the nature of past …

Coercive Sexual Strategies, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This study examines the use of coercive sexual strategies by men and the outcomes of these behaviors for women. Using a sample of 541 college undergraduates, data were gathered from men on their use of three types of coercive sexual strategies and from women on their experiences with these same forms of behaviors. For women, there is a positive association between being sexually active, having sexually permissive attitudes, drinking alcohol and being a victim of certain types of sexual coercive strategies. For men, sexually permissive attitudes and attitudes toward rape are found to be significant predictors of their use of …

Rhetoric And Rage: Third World Voices In International Legal Discourse, Karin Mickelson
Rhetoric And Rage: Third World Voices In International Legal Discourse, Karin Mickelson
All Faculty Publications
This paper sets out to question the conventional view of the Third World and international law, which tends to characterize Third World legal discourse as ad hoc and reactive. It considers whether it might be possible to identify "distinctive modes of thought and analysis" characteristic of a Third World approach to international law. In her analysis, the author begins by exploring various usages of the term "Third World," and explains the way in which it is used in this paper. She then sketches out Third World approaches to the subject areas of international economic law, human rights and the environment, …

Calming Anxiety: Developmental Interventions For Multigenerational Parent-Child Therapy, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Camillel Debell, Judith Wilkins
Calming Anxiety: Developmental Interventions For Multigenerational Parent-Child Therapy, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Camillel Debell, Judith Wilkins
Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
When parents bring a child or an adolescent to therapy, they often are anxious and want problems to be resolved as soon as possible. Sometimes, the counselor realizes that targeting interventions toward only the child will lead to limited change and might perpetuate the family's view of the child as a "problem." On the other hand, parents might resist suggestions for family therapy, believing as they do that the problem is located in the child. This article presents a method of working with both parents and the child that provides supportive therapy for the child while intervening with the parents …

Evaluation Of Coverboards For Sampling Salamanders In South Georgia, Charles Michael Houze Jr.
Evaluation Of Coverboards For Sampling Salamanders In South Georgia, Charles Michael Houze Jr.
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Salamanders are important components of many forested communities. However, their fossorial habits and seasonality often make them difficult to sample. The use of artificial coverboards (coverboards) is a relatively new and little-studied technique for monitoring the terrestrial activity of salamanders Coverboards are designed to simulate fallen tree limbs and logs, and to provide a moist refuge for forest salamanders. Despite several studies, questions remain concerning the value of coverboards. Therefore, I conducted an experiment in 1996-1997 to determine whether coverboards are as effective for sampling salamanders as searching natural cover objects such as logs and branches. Using a paired design, …
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Arthrography, And Ultrasound In Diagnosing Rotator Cuff Tears: An Evaluation Of Agreement, Andrea Solsona
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Arthrography, And Ultrasound In Diagnosing Rotator Cuff Tears: An Evaluation Of Agreement, Andrea Solsona
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Eleven patients who had a clinical suspicion of a rotator cuff tear were referred for a magnetic resonance imaging exam, an arthrographic exam or both. Additionally, all patients received a diagnostic ultrasound exam. The results of the imaging studies were compared to surgical or clinical diagnosis. Arthrography had 100% positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. Magnetic resonance imaging had 100% PPV, 60% NPV, 78% accuracy, 100% specificity, and 67% sensitivity. Ultrasound had 80% PPV, 50% NPV, 64% accuracy, 75% specificity, and 57% sensitivity. Based on these results, taking into consideration the national average costs …

The Effects Of Aerobics And Walking On Social Physique Anxiety And Self-Esteem Of Female College Students, Jessica L. Lloyd
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The purpose of this investigation was to explore the effectiveness of walking and aerobics as a way of modifying body image apprehension and self-esteem of female college students. Participants from this study comprised 88 (25 African Americans and 63 Caucasians) students from a Southeastern university. The participants were administered the 9-item Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) (Martin, Rejeski, Leary, McAuley, & Bane, 1997) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) (Rosenberg, 1979). Body composition, body weight, body height, and body mass index (BMI) were also evaluated. The participants performed in a 9-week walking or aerobics physical activity class. At the completion …

Teachers' Life Histories As Curriculum Context, Rebekah D. Kelleher
Teachers' Life Histories As Curriculum Context, Rebekah D. Kelleher
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
This qualitative study focuses on the teacher as curriculum enactor. Using life history methodology, the study explores how ordinary teachers' life experiences impact their present classroom decisions. The purpose of the study is three-fold: to give voice to the classroom teacher as curriculum expert; to encourage reflective practice; and to contribute to curriculum knowledge by focusing on the enacted curriculum. Three female middle school teachers participated in structured and unstructured interviews in which they shared their life stories and reflected on the origin of their teacher knowledge and behavior. The researcher reviewed transcripts of interviews and notes from observations of …

Eect Of Sintering Time On Sb Added Bipbsrcacuo Superconducting Ceramics, K. Kocabaş
Eect Of Sintering Time On Sb Added Bipbsrcacuo Superconducting Ceramics, K. Kocabaş
Turkish Journal of Physics
In this study, superconducting Sb doped BiPbSrCaCuO ceramics with a fixed nominal composition were prepared and sintered at 850^oC for different periods. The structural phases of the sintered ceramics were determined by means of the measurements of the resistivity-temperature behaviour and of the XRD analysis. Sb doping along with Pb doping in the BiSrCaCuO ceramics was observed to increase the volume fraction of the high $T_c$ phase, the onset temperature and the critical temperature $T_c$. The critical temperature for the 100 hour sintered sample was 4K higher than that of the 60 hour sintered sample.
Rules Of Engagement, Rebecca Tushnet
Rules Of Engagement, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Why does the law treat engagement rings differently from other gifts? The answer is rooted in a history in which courts generally entertained litigation over broken engagements. As legislatures slowly abolished actions for breach of promise to marry in the early and middle decades of this century, on the grounds that such actions were inconsistent with modem understandings of love and marriage, one potential fact pattern for successful plaintiffs emerged: the case in which a man sues a woman for the return of his engagement gifts.
The history and logic of this body of law-the rules of engagement invite examination.
The Effects Of Pah-Contaminated Sediments On Benthic-Feeding Fishes And Their Associated Prey., Candace Gay Hinkle-Conn
The Effects Of Pah-Contaminated Sediments On Benthic-Feeding Fishes And Their Associated Prey., Candace Gay Hinkle-Conn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Subtidal sediments near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, USA, have been contaminated with produced water, as indicated by the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) for over four decades. Studies were undertaken to examine the effect of produced water/PAH on the potential for trophic transfer (from meiofauna and small macrofauna to benthic-feeding fishes) of sediment-bound contaminants. A survey of meiofaunal communities along a putative pollution gradient from the produced water outfall to a distance of 1 km found that meiofauna densities were significantly higher at the most contaminated sites ($\sim$10,000 ng PAH g$\sp{-1}$ dry sediment). The community at the most contaminated sites, …

A Hierarchical Filtering-Based Monitoring Architecture For Large-Scale Distributed Systems, Ehab Salem Al-Shaer
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
On-line monitoring is essential for observing and improving the reliability and performance of large-scale distributed (LSD) systems. In an LSD environment, large numbers of events are generated by system components during their execution and interaction with external objects (e.g. users or processes). These events must be monitored to accurately determine the run-time behavior of an LSD system and to obtain status information that is required for debugging and steering applications. However, the manner in which events are generated in an LSD system is complex and represents a number of challenges for an on-line monitoring system. Correlated events axe generated concurrently …

A Literalist Proposes Four Modest Revisions To U.C.C. Article 3, Timothy R. Zinnecker
University of Richmond Law Review
I first taught a Payment Systems class during the fall of 1994. Not having taken the course in law school, and bringing very little "real world" experience in this area of commercial law to the classroom, I approached the task of teaching the course with some degree of fear and trepidation. I had already taught Secured Transactions, so I was familiar with the challenges of teaching a statutory course to a reluctant audience scarred by horror stories of their predecessors. I also audited a Payment Systems course taught by a colleague during the summer, so I had a good start …
Aerosol Particle Scavenging By Fog And Haze Droplets, Josef Podzimek
Aerosol Particle Scavenging By Fog And Haze Droplets, Josef Podzimek
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Droplet imprints in thin gelatin layers have been used for the investigation of coarse particles embedded in fog (haze) droplets in comparison to interstitial particles. Droplet samples were taken in less polluted regions of Missouri and Illinois and also in more polluted marine-urban environment in Italy. Considerable differences in particle size distribution and particle location inside the droplets have been found in samples collected on four sampling sites. The deduced relationships can be applied for the description of the aerosol scavenging process in fogs. The pollution of fog (haze) droplets may be related to the droplet mean volume radius and …
