"Pro-Life" Absolutes, Feminist Challenges: The Fundamentalist Narrative Of Irish Abortion Law 1986-1992, Ruth Fletcher Jan 1998

"Pro-Life" Absolutes, Feminist Challenges: The Fundamentalist Narrative Of Irish Abortion Law 1986-1992, Ruth Fletcher

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article asks how Irish abortion law developed to the point of stopping a young pregnant rape victim from travelling abroad to have an abortion in 1992 (Attorney General v. X.). The author argues that this case, which ultimately saw the Irish Supreme Court overturn that decision and recognize the young woman's right to abortion, was the last chapter of the fundamentalist narrative of Irish abortion law. The feminist critique of that law needs to consider its particular fundamentalist aspects in order to clarify the obstacles posed to the struggle for Irish women's reproductive freedom. The author argues that a …

A Transaction Model For Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava Jan 1998

A Transaction Model For Mobile Computing, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce a prewrite operation before a write operation in a mobile transaction to improve data availability. A prewrite operation does not update the state of a data object but only makes visible the value that the data object will have after the commit of the transaction. Once the transaction has read all the values and declares all the prewrites, it can precommit at a mobile host. The remaining transaction's execution is shifted to the stationary host. Writes on a database consume both time and resources at the stationary host and are therefore delayed. A pre-committed transaction's prewrite values are …

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor Jan 1998

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor

Articles

Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid 1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The first written evidence is found in the Penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that “misuse” children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon law texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and …

The Changing Nature Of Theory And Practice In Marketing: On The Value Of Synchrony, Aidan O'Driscoll, John Murray Jan 1998

The Changing Nature Of Theory And Practice In Marketing: On The Value Of Synchrony, Aidan O'Driscoll, John Murray

Articles

Any academic discipline with a closely associated area of professional endeavour is profoundly affected by the relationship between its theory and practice. Synchrony in theory and practice adds value to the management of enterprise and to the advance of the discipline. Mindful of this assertion, this article explores the changing nature of theory and practice in marketing. It examines current trends in marketing practice which are occurring as a result of change in markets, technology and organisations. It assesses the state of theory in six subfields of marketing. It also considers developments in closely related management disciplines as well as …

Java, Java, Java, Chaman Sabharwal Jan 1998

Java, Java, Java, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Everyone is talking about Java. The driving force for this chatter is Java''s simplicity and potential power. Java is programming language, and a language for the intranet and the World Wide Web (WWW). Java is a Write On one platform and Run on Many platforms (WORM) language. For network-friendly, platform-independent applications, Java (originally Oak) is an object oriented programming language. Java source code is compiled into a virtual machine code or bytecode. This makes the Java platform independent. It can be placed on a Web site, and executed on the client side on a PC-Intel, Mac, Motorola or UNIX-Solaris machine …

Characterization Of Generalized Haar Spaces, M. Bartelt, W. Li Jan 1998

Characterization Of Generalized Haar Spaces, M. Bartelt, W. Li

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We say that a subset G of C0(T, ℝk) is rotation-invariant if [Qg: g ∈ G]=G for any k x k orthogonal matrix Q. Let G be a rotation-invariant finite-dimensional subspace of C0(T, ℝk) on a connected, locally compact, metric space T. We prove that G is a generalized Haar subspace if and only if PG(ƒ) is strongly unique of order 2 whenever PG(ƒ) is a singleton.

Improving The Jar Slake, Slake Index, And Slake Durability Tests For Shales, Paul M. Santi Jan 1998

Improving The Jar Slake, Slake Index, And Slake Durability Tests For Shales, Paul M. Santi

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study proposes modifications to three shale durability tests to improve reproducibility, reduce the level of effort required, and better correlate the test to actual slaking characteristics. Modifications to the jar slake test reduced test variability by one-third, offering a substantial improvement in consistency, with only a slight loss in the ability of the test to predict slake durability. Analysis showed that slake index test error could be reduced or at least pinpointed by testing groups of samples, rather than single samples. Furthermore, the wet-sieving procedure should be more carefully defined. Analysis of correlations between single- and multiple-cycle slake durability …

The Case For Utilizing The World Trade Organization As A Forum For Global Environmental Regulation, Andrew L. Strauss Jan 1998

The Case For Utilizing The World Trade Organization As A Forum For Global Environmental Regulation, Andrew L. Strauss

School of Law Faculty Publications

In his article "Environmental Policy in the New World Economy," Alan Miller discusses the environmental implications of globalization. Recognizing that the flow of international private capital to developing countries is far more significant than international development assistance, he questions how we can use public policy to maximize the positive environmental effects of private investment. Miller suggests the need to find strategies that utilize market forces to benefit the environment.

This article heeds Alan Miller's call by suggesting new approaches to thinking about the potential for the World Trade Organization (WTO) to play a positive environmental role.

In this article, my …

The Modes Of Action Of Toxicants On The Cardiac Physiology Of The Blue Mussel, Mytilus Edulis, And The Common Shore Crab, Carcinus Maenas, Timothy Mark Curtis Jan 1998

The Modes Of Action Of Toxicants On The Cardiac Physiology Of The Blue Mussel, Mytilus Edulis, And The Common Shore Crab, Carcinus Maenas, Timothy Mark Curtis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The primary aim of this thesis was to establish the mode of action of the heavy metal, copper, on the cardiac physiology of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Exposure of specimens of M.edulis to dissolved copper led to a decrease in heart rate and an increase in heart rate variability (HRV). The concentration of copper causing a 50% reduction in heart rate was found to be 0.8µM, while the concentration causing a 50% increase in HRV was 0.06µM (48 h EC50s). Simultaneous measurements of valve activity indicated that the observed bradycardia was not caused by valve closure. Subsequently, it was …

Why I Am A Lawyer, Joseph L. Daly Jan 1998

Why I Am A Lawyer, Joseph L. Daly

San Diego Law Review

With so little honor associated with the law profession these days, one must wonder why any person aspiring to do something respectable with her or his life7 would choose to be a lawyer.8 To become a lawyer today, students must have a firm desire to be an attorney and a steadfast willingness to accept social opprobrium.9

An Analysis Of The Forty-Ninth Session Of The United Nations Sub-Commission On Prevention Of Discrimination And Protection Of Minorities, David Weissbrodt, Shinobu Garrigues, Roman Kroke

Articles

The United Nations Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities convened its 49th Session from August 4 through August 29, 1997, in Geneva, Switzerland. 1 Under the authority of the U.N. Charter, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) established the Sub-Commission in 1947 as a subsidiary body of the Commission on Human Rights. 2 ECOSOC also created two other sub-commissions at the same time, one to focus on women's rights 3 and the other to deal with freedom of information and freedom of the press. 4 The original mandate of the Sub-Commission was to recommend standards in pursuit …

A Feminist Interpretation Of The Law Of Legitimacy, Mary Louise Fellows Jan 1998

A Feminist Interpretation Of The Law Of Legitimacy, Mary Louise Fellows

Articles

I am actually going to continue Professor Ead's discussion on procreation and think about it in a slightly different way. As an inheritance law scholar, the definition of the parent-child relationship has obvious importance to me because it determines who is an heir. As a feminist scholar, the definition is also significant to me because the legal rules regarding the parent-child relationship provide a unique perspective on the dialectical link between property and family.

Listen, Matthew L.M. Fletcher Jan 1998

Listen, Matthew L.M. Fletcher

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

In a traditional law school setting, experiences of students of color, especially Native Americans, are often buried by the discourse of the dominant culture. This piece, a non-traditional work using elements of prose, lyric, monologue, and poetry, weaves strands of legal discourse, commentary, and autobiography into a critical narrative of the experience of legal education from an outsider law student's perspective. The author, a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, recounts these vignettes in a voice infused with the history and traditions of Native American oral storytelling.

Magnetoresistance Of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions In The Presence Of A Nonmagnetic Layer, Shi C. Zhang, P. M. Levy Jan 1998

Magnetoresistance Of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions In The Presence Of A Nonmagnetic Layer, Shi C. Zhang, P. M. Levy

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We find that electron propagation across a uniform nonmagnetic metallic layer di in a magnetically layered structure is coherent up to a critical length dc. This provides a possible explanation for the slow decay of the magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions when a layer of Cu or Ag is inserted between the magnetic electrode and the barrier. However, for many (most) structures the roughness of the interfaces breaks the coherence for di ≪ dc. While the loss of coherence is not fatal for the magnetoresistance of metallic multilayers, it is for tunnel junctions. The quantum well states arising from the …

Analysis Of The Value Of The Fe Examination For The Assessment Of Student Learning In Engineering And Science Topics, John L. Watson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the results of a project, which investigated the potential of fully using previously unreleased data from the nationally normed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination to assess learning in key engineering and science topics. In the past, very limited information was released by the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) for the eight hour FE examination, which is composed of 150-200 questions in ten morning and five afternoon topics. For the purposes of this project the NCEES agreed to release information to the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) to permit the value of the FE data …

Evolution Of In Situ Refractories In The 20th Century, William E. Lee, Robert E. Moore Jan 1998

Evolution Of In Situ Refractories In The 20th Century, William E. Lee, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A common theme over the past 100 years in refractories science and technology has been to generate a protective refractories layer in a high-temperature container, often by reaction of the refractory materials with the contents (glass, slag, or atmosphere). The history of refractories during the 20th century is used in this review to illustrate how techniques - such as slag splashing, in situ spinel generation in castables, magnesia dense layer formation in magnesia-carbon brick in steelmaking, clinker adhesion in cement kilns, and viscous boundary layer generation in glass tanks - have evolved to their present status.

Measurement Of Suspended Sediment Transport Processes Off The Holderness Coast - Southern North Sea, England, Joanna Catherine Blewett Jan 1998

Measurement Of Suspended Sediment Transport Processes Off The Holderness Coast - Southern North Sea, England, Joanna Catherine Blewett

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A field campaign was set up as part of the LOIS-RACS coastal program (1994-1996), to identify the near-bed physical processes responsible for suspended sediment movement in shallow water (10-20m depth) off the Holdemess coast, NE England. A new benthic tripod system Boundary Layer Intelligent Sensor System (BLISS) has been developed and deployed along a transect at three sites, normal to the coastline at Tunstall. Measurements of current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), pressure and CTD were recorded at 5 Hz for 17 minutes every hour, on the same data acquisition system. Results are presented for the summer, July 1995 and …

Complete Single-Ionization Momentum Spectra For Strong Perturbation Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, C. J. Wood, H. Schmidt-Böcking, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich Jan 1998

Complete Single-Ionization Momentum Spectra For Strong Perturbation Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, C. J. Wood, H. Schmidt-Böcking, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The combination of recoil ion and ionized electron momentum spectroscopy provides an unparalleled method to investigate the details of ion-atom collision dynamics in kinematically complete experiments. To predict single ionization scattering behavior at the level now realized by experiment, the classical trajectory three-body Monte Carlo method has been used to obtain complete momenta information for the ionized electron, recoil ion, and projectile in the collision plane defined by the incident projectile and outgoing recoil ion. Strongly coupled systems were considered where the charge state of the projectile divided by the speed of the collision [Formula Presented] is greater than unity. …
