Priviledged Servants: Community Service In Private High Schools, Ellen Clarissa Reynolds
Priviledged Servants: Community Service In Private High Schools, Ellen Clarissa Reynolds
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
Traditionally, the school has been the primary role model for citizenship development. One method schools may use to convey the roles and models of involved citizens is through community service experiences.
Public and private schools throughout the United States include community service as part of the curriculum and/or extracurricular activities. Service promotes responsibility, a caring ethic, and growth of community. Service can improve society through individuals working together and forming a bond with one another. Service provides opportunities to witness the diverse cultures of society. Through service, students may experience affective and cognitive development, form relationships with community members, and …

Institutional Arrangements For Watershed Management: A Case Study Of Arenal, Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Alvaro Fernández González
Institutional Arrangements For Watershed Management: A Case Study Of Arenal, Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Alvaro Fernández González
Monteverde Institute: Economy and Resource Management
The CREED Costa Rica project conducted an exhaustive quantitative inquiry into the economic factors that determine land use in the Río Chiquito watershed of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica, and found that livestock production is likely to produce positive hydrological externalities. This paper integrates these results into an application of the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework that is informed by a participatory process conducted with watershed stakeholders. The paper identifies physical measures, institutional arrangements and incentive mechanisms to stimulate improved watershed management in Río Chiquito by expanding the analysis beyond just the internalisation of hydrological externalities, to consideration of the larger …
Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim
Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim
Theses and Dissertations
Macroscale rate-limited sorption modeling was tested using a production transport code, the GMS/FEMWATER ground-water modeling package. The code (Version 1.1 of FEMWATER. dated 1 August 1995) was applied to a 3D conceptual model developed from a field site at Dover AFB, DE. A simulation was performed of a 200 hour contaminant injection pulse followed by clean water flushing. A moment analysis performed on the resulting breakthrough curve validated code self-consistency. Another injection pulse simulation showed that retardation temporally delays the breakthrough peak. Transport simulations of pulsed clean water pumping of the test cell with a prescribed initial contaminant distribution demonstrated …

Differences Between Regular And Random Order Of Updates In Damage-Spreading Simulations, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber
Differences Between Regular And Random Order Of Updates In Damage-Spreading Simulations, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the spreading of damage in the three-dimensional Ising model by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Within the Glauber dynamics we use different rules for the order in which the sites are updated. We find that the stationary damage values and the spreading temperature are different for different update order. In particular, random update order leads to larger damage and a lower spreading temperature than regular order. Consequently, damage spreading in the Ising model is nonuniversal not only with respect to different update algorithms (e.g., Glauber vs heat-bath dynamics) as already known, but even with respect to the …

The Emergence Of An Ethnic Millenarian Thinking And The Development Of Nationalism In Tahiti, Bruno Saura
The Emergence Of An Ethnic Millenarian Thinking And The Development Of Nationalism In Tahiti, Bruno Saura
Pacific Studies
This article analyzes the emergence in Tahiti of a body of theological and philosophical works written in Tahitian by Duro Raapoto, the leading intellectual of the Protestant Church and one of the best poets of French Polynesia. They constitute a new syncretic and millennialistic rewriting of Tahitian history as well as a rereading of anthropological ideas relative to pre-European society through a reinterpretation of some essential concepts of Polynesian culture. Their author’s objective is to restore the golden age of innocence presented as “the authentic Tahitian religion” and to establish the Kingdom of God within the Tahitian people, “God’s chosen.” …

The End Of The Market: A Psychoanalysis Of Law And Economics, Jeanne L. Schroeder
The End Of The Market: A Psychoanalysis Of Law And Economics, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Articles
The perfect market is the end of all actual markets - it is their ideal form. In normative economics, actual markets are the means of achieving the end or ideal of the perfect market. But this means that to achieve a perfect market would result in the end of all actual markets.
Despite the centrality of the ideal of the perfect market in the subset of law and economics scholarship based on classical price theory, there is surprisingly little literature on its parameters. In this Commentary, Professor Schroeder examines this literature in order to explicate the nature of this ideal. …

Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution provides that the President shall have the power to make treaties by and with the consent of two-thirds of tie Senate. Yet, most of the international agreements into which the United States has entered over the last fifty years, including NAFTA and the WTO Agreement, have been concluded as congressional-executive agreements-a procedure by which the President submits an agreement to both houses of Congress for simple majority approvaL In an article in the Harvard Law Review entitled "Is NAFTA Constitutional?," Professors Bruce Ackerman and David Golove attempted to provide this practice with constitutionalfoundations. …
The Hammer And The Anvil: The Concept Of Irony With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard, Michael T. Carper
The Hammer And The Anvil: The Concept Of Irony With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard, Michael T. Carper
English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
In this thesis, the author explores a novel way of formulating the otherwise old and tired trope of irony. Chapter one begins by examining some common literary critical views of irony. Wayne C. Booth conceives of irony mostly as a very finite operation--the author states something in such a way that the clever reader realizes the author in fact means the opposite of what he says. The reader, then, performs what Booth calls a "reconstruction," and once the reconstruction is finished, so is the irony's "effect." Paul Bove wants to replace irony with what he calls a "destructive poetics." Irony, …

A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin
A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore my personal experience with the reciprocal relationships of the various fields of art. The media of art includes the fine arts, crafts, visual arts, theater, film, music, dance and literature - all genres commonly considered "the arts." These different fields are not isolated in and of themselves but rather have mutual connections amongst them. This thesis elucidates my concept of art as one. A vague fondness for the arts drew me to the Seoul Arts High School in 1987. I had a broad interest in art in general, and did not limit …
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Theses
This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.
Senior Outlook On Death And Dying: A Comparative Study Of Older Volunteers Serving Older Clients Versus Older Volunteers Serving Younger Clients, Charles O. Udstuen
Senior Outlook On Death And Dying: A Comparative Study Of Older Volunteers Serving Older Clients Versus Older Volunteers Serving Younger Clients, Charles O. Udstuen
Student Work
This thesis examines the attitudes toward death and dying held by volunteers in the Senior Companion Program as compared with those in the Foster Grandparent Program. These programs represent two distinct environments, since volunteers in the former program interact only with other senior citizens while those in the latter program interact with children. In recent years volunteerism has been studied extensively relative to the positive effects that volunteer activities have on those performing them. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of the particular surroundings in which the volunteers operate. The comparison of two groups of volunteers …
Scenes From The Contemporary Barcelona Stage: La Fura Dels Baus's Aspiration To The Authentic, Sharon G. Feldman
Scenes From The Contemporary Barcelona Stage: La Fura Dels Baus's Aspiration To The Authentic, Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
In October 1983, just south of Barcelona at the annual Sitges Theatre Festival, beneath the railroad tracks in the claustrophobic space of a subterranean pedestrian passageway, La Fura dels Baus erupted into public view with an embryonic version of their first major spectacle, entitled Accions ("Actions"). The performance was conceived along the same aesthetic lines that continue to shape even the most recent work of this Catalan company. Accions consisted of a series of transgressive and, at times, startling exercicis pràctics ("practical exercises") intended to elicit an impulsive, visceral response from audience members. In their program notes, La Fura defined …
