As institutions increasingly seek to articulate the value of information literacy within broader educational missions, academic libraries are challenged to align instructional practice with institutional learning goals. This article explores that alignment by placing the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in conversation with Baylor University’s general education outcomes, known as the Four Cs. Through an interpretive mapping of the Framework’s threshold concepts to the Four Cs, the study reveals how information literacy supports multiple dimensions of undergraduate learning, including communication, critical thinking, civic engagement, and Christian perspective. Individual campaign contribution limits are one of the few remaining constitutional tools in a state or local government’s toolkit for fighting corruption, or its appearance, in elections.  Because contribution limits marginally burden a contributor’s First Amendment freedoms, a challenged limit must survive an arduous tailoring analysis to ensure that the limit is closely drawn to the government’s purported interest in combatting actual or perceived quid pro quo corruption.  However, before a challenged limit is subjected to this tailoring analysis, the government must first demonstrate that it has an individualized interest in addressing the existence of actual or perceived quid pro …

The Supreme Court has revitalized the jury’s role in criminal sentencing over the past quarter century, reaffirming that the Sixth Amendment right to trial by jury extends to factfinding that increases the punishment range for a conviction.  But one class of sentencing findings—those related to a defendant’s criminal history—has been excluded.  The Court has upheld an exception to the jury right where the fact to be found is whether a defendant has a prior conviction.  Relying on that prior-conviction exception, many jurisdictions have continued to allow judges to increase the possible sentence based on their own preponderance-of-the-evidence findings about disputed …

Employers’ use of background checks to exclude long-term temporary workers (“permatemps”) with criminal records from permanent employment —despite proven performance—creates a hidden barrier to advancement in the labor market.  Permatemping, where workers remain in the same role for months or years through a staffing agency, has grown alongside the rapid expansion of temporary work, which has nearly tripled since the 1990s. U.S. staffing agencies now hire nearly 13 million temporary and contract workers each year, and a significant portion of this workforce has criminal records.  For many, staffing agencies are not just a last resort, but a deliberate pathway to …

BACKGROUND: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enables broad, untargeted detection of pathogens and microbial signals across complex sample types. However, the diversity of operational contexts, from regulatory enforcement to exploratory discovery, challenges the defining of analytical or interpretive standards appropriate across all applications. Variability in laboratory practices, bioinformatic methods, and reporting conventions continues to limit consistency and decision-maker confidence in mNGS results. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major worldwide public health challenge that compromises the proper treatment of infectious diseases, including in settings such as Sulaymaniyah and Chamchamal, Iraq. Continuous monitoring of bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles is necessary to guide suitable therapy and improve patient outcomes.
A cross-sectional study of 101 clinical specimens was conducted, and they were collected from patients attending public healthcare laboratories in Sulaymaniyah and Chamchamal, Iraq, between April and May 2025. Associations Of Subclinical Hypothyroidism And Thyroid Autoimmunity With Insulin Resistance Independent Of Adiposity: An Analysis Of Nhanes, Iman Taher Hussein

A thyroid–inflammation–insulin pathway has been proposed in which thyroid dysfunction promotes inflammation and thereby reduces insulin sensitivity, but adiposity-adjusted population evidence is limited. This cross-sectional analysis examined whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and thyroid autoimmunity are associated with insulin resistance independently of body mass index (BMI), and whether C-reactive protein (CRP), the only inflammatory biomarker available, is associated with either, using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2012 data. Non-pregnant adults aged 18–60 years with fasting glucose < 126 mg/dL and normal free thyroxine were included; SCH was defined as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) 4.5–10 mIU/L, and insulin resistance was quantified by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Linear regression of log HOMA-IR accounted for the complex survey design (strata, clusters, weights) and was adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and survey cycle, with sensitivity and interaction analyses. Among 2,434 adults (89 with SCH), no association with HOMA-IR was detected for TSH (β = 0.009 per mIU/L; 95% CI -0.014 to 0.032), SCH (β = -0.035; 95% CI -0.186 to 0.115), or thyroid peroxidase …

This paper develops a collage-based framework to holistically assess Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated first release after the Eras Tour concluded. The Life of a Showgirl, with sparkling promotional materials leading up to its October 2025 drop and polarizing critical reception following it, represents an entertainer’s lifestyle while still concealing what was alluded to behind the Eras Tour curtain. Rather than engage in a direct response to Showgirl, I critically evaluate positive and negative commentary from listeners regarding the album, and I thematically analyze lyrical concepts throughout Swift’s discography to contextualize Showgirl within the arc of her work. In the current moment of historical erasure—marked by book bans, curricular restrictions, and political efforts to sanitize discussions of race—(re)membering becomes a pedagogical imperative. Drawing on Morrison’s (1987) articulation of (re)membering and Black feminist theories of memory (Collins, 2000; Hartman, 2008; hooks, 1994), this paper uses narrative inquiry to trace the intergenerational educational journeys of a Black rural Southern woman born in 1914 and her granddaughter, a contemporary teacher educator. Through autobiography and lived experience, this paper examines how personal and communal histories counter disremembering (Trouillot, 1995) and the politics of being forgotten. This article positions the kitchen table as a vital pedagogical archive within Black educational history. Drawing on the work of various Black scholars, it argues that domestic spaces—kitchen tables, living rooms, basements, and barbershops have long functioned as fugitive classrooms where Black communities cultivated knowledge, identity, and political consciousness beyond the constraints of formal schooling. Using Carrie Mae Weems’ Kitchen Table Series as a central metaphor, the article traces how oral traditions, storytelling, and community dialogue preserved Black intellectual traditions during eras of segregation, educator displacement, and systemic erasure throughout history. This article reconceptualizes the Atrato River as a living pedagogical archive that participates in the formation of Black education in Chocó, Colombia. Drawing on Black feminist oral methods, it centers a dialogue among Black educators to examine how educational knowledge emerges through relationships with the river, territory, memory, and community life. The analysis argues that river-based pedagogies distinct Afro-Colombian epistemologies that challenge White/Mestizo-centered and standardized models of schooling. Storytelling, river travel, intergenerational memory, and everyday territorial practices are examined as pedagogical processes through which Black communities sustain identity, historical consciousness, and collective sovereignty. This article traces the long tradition of Black Pedagogical Excellence (BPE), a lineage spanning fugitive literacy practices, Reconstruction and Jim Crow classrooms, Black literary societies, Afrocentric schools, and contemporary Hip Hop and Afrofuturist learning spaces. Using Endarkened Feminist Epistemology as a guiding framework, I conceptualize Black educators’ stories as theory and their classrooms as sacred, intellectual, and political sites. Through historical-literary analysis and synthesis of current research, the manuscript highlights four enduring constructs of BPE—care as resistance, ideological clarity, cultural attentiveness, and humanism—while demonstrating how Hip Hop pedagogy, storywork, and speculative literacy practices extend these commitments today. The Black American community has always understood the power of literacy and education, and the importance of Black self-sufficiency to attain these. The establishment of Freedom Schools during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi is an actualization of that understanding. Since 1995, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has carried on the work and legacy, with Freedom Schools still taking place all over the United States. During one of our many virtual writing sessions–spaces that for us had become as much about thinking and collective sensemaking as they were about writing–Taryrn shared plans for an upcoming research visit to Zimbabwe. Supported by an International Center Global Fellows grant at her institution, the research visit was intended to extend her existing research agenda into a more explicitly global and transnational context. Yet, as our conversation unfolded, what began as a discussion of an upcoming research experience deepened into reflection on place, memory, family, and the histories that accompany us into our scholarly work.

Scant research elucidates the contributions of both master’s-level and doctoral higher education administration professional preparation programs at HBCUs. These programs exist across only approximately 20% of these institutions. In this conceptual research piece, the researchers will explore the historical legacies and contemporary status of HBCU higher education graduate programs in higher education. Recommendations and future directions are provided to enhance capacity and amplify the contributions of these significant programs. These include strategies for program distinction, professional connectivities, and increasing scholarly contributions.
