Narrative Analysis Of Sexual Etiquette In Teenage Magazines, Ana C. Garner, Helen M. Sterk, Shawn Adams
Narrative Analysis Of Sexual Etiquette In Teenage Magazines, Ana C. Garner, Helen M. Sterk, Shawn Adams
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Expanding on existing research on women's magazines, this essay examines the sexual etiquette developed in advice columns in magazines popular among teenage women. Over a span of 20 years, the advice has changed very little. Serving the rhetorical function of field guides and training manuals, teen magazines limit women's sociality and sexuality within narrowly defined heterosexual norms and practices. The rhetoric of sexual etiquette encourages young women to be sex objects and teachers of interpersonal communication rather than lovers, friends, and partners. Young women are being taught to subordinate self for others and to be contained.

De-Emphasizing Grade-Level Identities: A Case Study Of Mathematics Instruction In An Intermediate Elementary Multiage Classroom, Kevin Oconnor
De-Emphasizing Grade-Level Identities: A Case Study Of Mathematics Instruction In An Intermediate Elementary Multiage Classroom, Kevin Oconnor
Dissertations
This is an interpretive study that investigates the nature of the issues, dilemmas, and successes of planning and implementing a mathematics program with minimal reference to grade-level designations in a multiage classroom setting of fourth—and fifth-grade students.
The study focused on how one teacher conceptualized, designed, and structured a mathematics curriculum. An analysis of over 60 hours of interviews conducted over six months revealed a teacher who integrated her knowledge of elementary mathematics with her knowledge and practice of teaching and learning theories, mathematical understanding, curriculum perspectives, and classroom management. This integration is explained through a conceptual framework of the …
Study On The Estimation And Control Of A Liquid Composite Molding Process, Dennis Sourlas, Susmito Naha, Gary Patterson, Richard Parnas
Study On The Estimation And Control Of A Liquid Composite Molding Process, Dennis Sourlas, Susmito Naha, Gary Patterson, Richard Parnas
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An on-line nonlinear receding horizon control algortithm is employed in order to achieve setpoint tracking targets in the context of liquid composite molding processes. The robustness of this control strategy against process-model deviations is tested. Finally, recursive parameter estimation is employed as a means of actively enhancing the performance of the process control algorithm. © 1998 AACC.
Reconsidering Solidarity In The Mormon Village, Todd L. Goodsell
Reconsidering Solidarity In The Mormon Village, Todd L. Goodsell
Theses and Dissertations
In what became a classic rural community study, Lowry Nelson concluded in his first Mormon village series in the 1920's that the Mormon village is characterized by an extraordinary sense of solidarity. He claimed that this strong solidarity can be primarily explained by four factors of the social group: leadership, conflict, cooperation, and ideology. After resurveying the Mormon village in 1950, he concluded that solidarity had declined. However, a few problems become apparent to the present researcher looking back upon Nelson's findings. One of them is that Nelson never had a clear definition of solidarity to begin with. Another is …

The Motions Of Clusters Of Galaxies And The Dipoles Of The Peculiar Velocity Field, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner
The Motions Of Clusters Of Galaxies And The Dipoles Of The Peculiar Velocity Field, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
In preceding papers of this series, TF relations for galaxies in 24 clusters with radial velocities between 1000 and 9200 km s-1 (SCI sample) were obtained, a Tully-Fisher (TF) template relation was constructed, and mean offsets of each cluster with respect to the template were obtained. Here, an estimate of the line-of-sight peculiar velocities of the clusters and their associated errors are given. It is found that cluster peculiar velocities in the cosmic microwave background reference frame do not exceed 600 km s-1 and that their distribution has a line-of-sight dispersion of 300 km s-1, suggesting …
The Effect Of Biculturalism On Self-Esteem In Northern Plains Native American College Students, Mary J. Wilkie
The Effect Of Biculturalism On Self-Esteem In Northern Plains Native American College Students, Mary J. Wilkie
Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of biculturalism on self esteem in a sample of 51 Northern Plains Native American college students (29 females, 22 males). Subjects completed the Northern Plains Biculturalism Inventory (NPB1; Allen & French, 1994) and the Index of Self-Esteem (ISE; Hudson, 1982). Pearson Product- Moment correlations, independent t-tests, a multiple regression analysis, and an one-way analysis-of-variance was performed using the SPSS statistical package to examine, if any, the relationships between the NPBI subscales and the ISE total scores. This design tested the applicability of the Orthogonal Theory of Biculturalism (Oetting & …
Science Experiences Of Six Elementary Student Teachers: A Case Study, Jacqueline K. Wilcox
Science Experiences Of Six Elementary Student Teachers: A Case Study, Jacqueline K. Wilcox
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study focused on the science experiences of six elementary student teachers. The purpose of the study was to learn how preservice teachers make meaning of science teaching during their student teaching experience. The sources of data were interviews with participants, descriptive field notes from observations of their science teaching, and artifacts collected from the site. The themes that emerged from data analysis were personal and professional career influences and constant adjustments of teaching strategies. The participants experienced these themes in varying intensities.
Learning to teach science to elementary children for the first time is complicated by the context …
Decolonizing The Mind With Ngugi Wa Thiong'o And Chinua Achebe: Searching For A Voice In Postcolonial African Literature, Steven M. Almquist
Decolonizing The Mind With Ngugi Wa Thiong'o And Chinua Achebe: Searching For A Voice In Postcolonial African Literature, Steven M. Almquist
Theses and Dissertations
Any discussion of postcolonial African literature requires consideration of both the inherent diversity of “African” and the complex history of colonialism throughout Africa. Ngugi wa Thiong’o claims there are “broad affinities” among the diverse peoples of sub-Saharan Africa which allow for a broad discussion of the common experiences of colonialism, but it is necessary to complement these broad affinities with specific cultural references and historic contexts. This paper attempts to delineate some of the common struggles facing postcolonial African peoples by focusing on the specific writings of Kenya’s Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Nigeria’s Chinua Achebe. Though they are from disparate …

Dimuonium (the bound system of two muons, the μ+ μ--atom system) has not been observed yet. In this paper we discuss the electromagnetic production of dimuonium at RHIC and LHC in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The production of parastates is analyzed in the equivalent photon approximation. For the treatment of orthostates, we develop a three-photon formalism. We determine the production rates at RHIC and LHC with an accuracy of a few percent and discuss problems related to the observation of dimuonium.

The increased popularity of alternative medicine treatments has prompted resurgence in the use of traditional herbal remedies. Among this vast number of herbs, ginseng is purchased by a considerable number of consumers; especially three species: Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, and Eleutherococcus senticosus. Many of the physiological effects claimed by ginseng manufacturers tend to mimic those of central nervous system stimulants. This led to the purpose of this research, which was to develop an HPLC chromatographic method in order to determine if any specific CNS stimulants are within ginseng supplements. Specifically we found a series of CNS stimulants, methylxanthines (caffeine, theophylline, …
Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Duke Law Journal
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. is perhaps best known for his "tough-minded" jurisprudence based on objective standards of reasonableness. Scholars have traditionally understood Holmes's jurisprudential outlook as fundamentally behavioristic. Professor Dailey challenges that understanding, revealing the importance of Romantic psychology in Holmes's major writings. His outlook, she argues, was shaped by his belief in unconscious motivations, imagination, irrationality and instinctual drives. Rather than simply characterize Holmes as a "Romantic," Professor Dailey draws out the conflict in his thought, illuminating his struggle to develop an empirical approach to law that could also account for the depth and complexity of human nature.
