Effects Of Food Deprivation, Age, Time Of Day, And Gamma Irradiation On Attraction Of Mexican Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) To Two Synthetic Lures In A Wind Tunnel, David C. Robacker

The physiological condition of Mexican fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), affected their attraction to 2 similar but qualitatively different synthetic lures in wind-tunnel bioassays. The 2 lures were BioLure (ammonium acetate and putrescine) and AMPu (ammonium carbonate, methylamine HCI, and putrescine) . Effects of food deprivation on attraction to the lures were smaller than the effects of sex, time of day, and irradiation. Sugar-fed, protein-starved flies were attracted more strongly than other hunger-status groups to the lures. Sugar-starved, protein-starved females were less responsive than other groups of females to AMPu. Protein-starved males were more responsive than protein-fed males to BioLure. …

Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."

My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

In a paper presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing and published in this issue of Documentary Editing, Michael Stevens discussed advances in the craft, professionalism, and legacy of the field over the past twenty years. The book that he and Steven Burg have written is an example of the interconnections among these advances. For a craft to improve, its practitioners must become more professional and reflective about their practices. Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

The development of managed behavioral health care carve-out contracts covering a discrete subset of benefits available for use by persons with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders poses major challenges for public purchasers. This Issue Brief explores several key issues that arise when drafting such agreements. Many of the issues that arise in the drafting of carve-out agreements will require the public purchaser to resolve basic policy questions well before the drafting of requests for proposals or contracts can proceed.

In the early morning hours of May 5, 1863, Union soldiers forcibly arrested Clement L. Vallandigham, a prominent Democratic politician and former congressman, for an anti-war speech which he had given a few days earlier in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Vallandigham's arrest ignited debate about freedom of speech in a democracy during a time of war and the First Amendment rights of critics of an administration. During the last decade, the United States Supreme Court has rendered four major decisions regarding the validity of suspicionless drug testing policies. Such drug testing policies have become a common way for employers and other interested parties-including the government-both to deter the use of drugs and to determine who is acting under the influence of illegal narcotics. Because government officials often randomly select individuals for drug testing, some of these individuals have charged that a governmental drug testing policy violates the Fourth Amendment. Physician-assisted suicide has become the subject of a hotly contested legal and political debate, both in the United States and abroad. In 1997, the United States Supreme Court rendered two decisions concerning physician-assisted suicide, and two states recently enacted legislation on this issue: Oregon in 1997 and Virginia in 1998. Nevertheless, the legality of physician-assisted suicide remains unclear as doctors, pharmacists, legal commentators, and a growing segment of the general population continue to argue over the line between "letting die" and "killing."
