Signals used to attract mates are often conspicuous to predators and parasites, and their evolution via sexual selection is expected to be opposed by viability selection. Many secondary sexual traits may represent a compromise between attractiveness and avoidance of detection. Although such signal exploitation appears to be widespread, most examples come from species that use acoustic or olfactory mating signals, and relatively few cases of visual signal exploitation can be substantiated. Because males are usually the signaling sex, they are more at risk from predators or parasitoids that locate prey or hosts by sexual signals; this differential selection on the …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article presents a rationale and procedure for evaluating literature study guides based on Langer's model for literature study and Cambourne's conditions for learning. Guides for three books are then compared using the evaluation procedure. The evaluation of five publishers' guides shows great differences in treatments of the same books.

In recognition of this the Minister of Fisheries is releasing the plan 'Management of Houtman Abrolhos System', following a period of public consultation. These three Working Papers look at NAFTA after four years. In Part I, the authors examine NAFTA's impact on trade and investment in North America; in Part II, its impact on jobs and employment; and in Part III, its impact on environmental issues. They conclude that NAFTA is an important agreement that, together with the Uruguay Round accord, will influence patterns of trade and investment in the future. This paper presents findings from a two year field research project focusing on the public conflict that erupted over the Enola Gay exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). This conflict did not end with people reaching consensus, ceremoniously signing documents, shaking hands and piling accolades upon one another for solving a serious problem. It can more accurately be described as a stalemate and ultimately a lose-lose proposition even in light of the many opportunities that arose that could have produced at least a partial if not total agreement. As I contemplate the rise worldwide in intrastate (in contrast to interstate) conflicts (see, e.g., van Creveld, 1991 and K. Holsti, 1996), leading to Yugoslavian and Rwandan-type situations, I sense the need to do something about them. As Rousseau has said, "wars occur because there is nothing to prevent them" (cited in Waltz, 1959, p. 232). The writer considers the prospects for the strategic construction of associative governance in liberal politics and capitalistic economies, taking as an example Ontario, Canada, which is one of North America's leading associative democratic laboratories. He examines innovative dynamics in three discrete but interrelated fields that constituted the policy foundation of an effort undertaken between 1985 and 1995 to build a new partnership-based governance regime mandated to put in place a diversifies quality production restructuring project. Offering A Candidate Answer: An Information Seeking Strategy, Anita Pomerantz

Communication Faculty Scholarship

Interactants use a variety of strategies to seek information from one another. One strategy involves incorporating a Candidate Answer in a query. In using this strategy, a speaker provides a model of the type of answer that would satisfy his/her purpose-for-asking. Supplying a model is useful when a speaker wants to guide, direct, or assist a respondent in providing particular information. In offering a Candidate Answer, a speaker can display having knowledge and familiarity of a circumstance. A Candidate Answer can be read as revealing the speaker's attitude toward, and expectations of, relevant others.

This Comment, like a traditional Comment regarding affirmative action, will provide analysis pertaining to the historical events that shaped modem affirmative action policies. However, this Comment will also examine the recent settlement of Taxman v. Board of Education, a most intriguing display of political maneuvering which remains shrouded in controversy." Taxman would have presented the upreme Court with an ideal lens through which to examine the constitutionality of affirmative action. However, as a result of industrious manipulation, the Court narrowly missed that opportunity.
