When parties contract to build the world's largest hydroelectric project, upon whom should the burden fall to mitigate the costs to the environment resulting from the lack of foresight and research into the effects of the projects? In the recent past, society's view has been too myopic to comprehend the importance of the environment to all of humanity in sustaining life. Accordingly, people must participate in the decision-making process of national and international corporations in order to police environmentally deleterious activities.

Transition From Preschool To Kindergarten: A Description Of Area Preschools For West Valley Kindergarten Teachers, Susan Graham

Old and new definitions are given for readiness. Concerns about kindergarten readiness testing and current practices for those children identified unready for school are addressed. New strategies for success in the early years of education are discussed with a particular emphasis on easing the student transition between preschool and kindergarten through awareness of local area preschool programs.

Fluctuating Silicate : Nitrate Ratios And Coastal Plankton Food Webs, N Qureshi, N N. Rabalais, Q Dortch, R. Eugene Turner, R F. Shaw, J Cope

Marine diatoms require dissolved silicate to form an external shell. and their growth becomes Si-limited when the atomic ratio of silicate to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (SI:DIN) approaches 1:1, also known as the Redfield ratio. Fundamental changes in the diatom-to-zooplankton-to-higher trophic level food web should occur when this ratio falls below 1:1. and the proportion of diatoms in the phytoplankton community is reduced. We quantitatively substantiate these predictions by using a variety of data from the Mississippi River continental shelf, a system in which the SI:DIN loading ratio has declined from around 3:1 to 1:1 during this century because of land-use …

Body Condition And The Adrenal Stress Response In Captive American Kestrel Juveniles, Julie A. Heath, Alfred M. Dufty Jr.

We examined the adrenal response to handling stress of birds in different body conditions. In order to affect the birds’ body condition, young (73-d old) female American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were maintained for 6 wk on one of three diets: a control diet (fed ad lib.) and two calorically restricted diets. To invoke a stress response, we removed birds from their cages and took repeated blood samples over the course of an hour. All birds responded to handling stress with an increase in plasma corticosterone, but control birds (in good body condition) showed a more rapid increase to …

The Symposium focuses around two hypotheticals. The question posed about each-whether it is ethical for an estate lawyer to represent spouses, one of whom chooses subservience to the interests of the other-provokes discussion of a broad set of concerns about the scope and meaning of the contemporary family, and about the appropriate parameters of legal representation of family members.

Sequence Profile Of The Parallel Β Helix In The Pectate Lyase Superfamily, Susan Heffron, Gregory R. Moe, Volker Sieber, Jerome Mengaud, Pascale Cossart, Jacqueline Vitali, Frances Jumak

The parallel β helix structure found in the pectatelyasesuperfamily has been analyzed in detail. A comparative analysis of known structures has revealed a unique sequenceprofile, with a strong positional preference for specific amino acids oriented toward the interior of the parallel β helix. Using the unique sequenceprofile, search patterns have been constructed and applied to the sequence databases to identify a subset of proteins that are likely to fold into the parallel β helix. Of the 19 families identified, 39% are known to be carbohydrate-binding proteins, and 50% belong to a broad category of proteins with sequences containing leucine-rich repeats …
