A typical area-species curve shows that species richness (number of species) and island size are positively correlated. I tested whether the area-species concept, which was developed using islands, could be applied to herbaceous plants in canopy gaps in a hemlock community.

I conducted studies in Limberlost, Shenandoah National Park. I measured the species richness of herbaceous plants in six gaps during the summer and fall of 1995 and eight gaps and one non-gap site in the spring of 1996. The two additional gaps in 1996 extended the upper range of gap sizes. I calculated the correlation between species richness and …

I review the purported opposition between computational and dynamical approaches in cognitive science. I argue that both computational and dynamical notions will be necessary for a full explanatory account of cognition, and give a perspective on how recent research in complex systems can lead to a much needed rapprochement between computational and dynamical styles of explanation.

Metastability is a common phenomenon. Many evolutionary processes, both natural and artificial, alternate between periods of stasis and brief periods of rapid change in their behavior. In this paper an analytical model for the dynamics of a mutation-only genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced that identifies a new and general mechanism causing metastability in evolutionary dynamics. The GA’s population dynamics is described in terms of flows in the space of fitness distributions. The trajectories through fitness distribution space are derived in closed form in the limit of infinite populations. We then show how finite populations induce metastability, even in regions where …

Last year, in Washington v. Glucksberg, the Supreme Court decided that the Constitution does not afford us a right to commit assisted suicide. I endorse this conclusion. I might less modestly say that it endorses me, for the Court's understanding of freedom is similar to the one I propose in What Are Freedoms For?, and the theory it rejects is the one I am most concerned to combat.

The threat of oil pollution in the world's busiest waterway, the Malacca Strait, and the legal complications that surround it continues to be a controversial issue despite international law reforms. Recent accidents have demonstrated that current measures to prevent pollution are inadequate and that traditional methods of enforcement are ineffective. Unfortunately, there is a tension between international law of the sea provisions governing pollution control in the Malacca Strait, and the desires of bordering coastal States to regulate vessels trafficking the Strait so that accident risk is minimized. This comment will demonstrate how discrepancies among product li- ability standards and different interpretations of their application have cre- ated fear and uncertainty in the pharmaceutical industry. This fear has caused distortions in the market, increased costs for both manufacturers and consumers, and chilled the research and development of new products. To combat these problems, this comment proposes that the United States, the European Union, and Japan work together to create a new international, uniform system of product liability for pharmaceutical products. Part I of this note describes the facts that lead up to the ruling in Ka- lanke v. Freie Hansesetadt Bremen and critiques the decision of the ECJ. Since the Court's reasoning lacks depth and precedence, Part II examines the opinion of the Advocate General to explain the possible reasoning be- hind the decision. Part III scrutinizes the degree of cohesiveness between the Kalanke ruling and subsequent decisions by the ECJ. Part IV follows the reactions of the European market to Kalanke. Bovine carbonic anhydrase II (EC 4.2.1.1) was covalently linked to chondroitin-4-sulfate (β-glucoronic acid-[1-3]-N-acetyl-β-galactosamine-4-sulfate-[1-4]) from bovine trachea. A zero length crosslinking procedure which reacts the protein amino groups with preactivated carboxyl groups of chondroitin-4-sulfate was carried out with l-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide as coupling agents. The complex remained enzymatically active, was water soluble, and appeared to be about 170 kDa as analyzed on SDS-PAGE and column chromatography on Sephadex G 150. It is likely that 5 protein molecules (30 kDa each) are linked to 1 chondroitin-4-sulfate molecule (20 kDa). The CO2 hydration activity of the complex was generally slightly less than the …

This Essay attempts to give globalization an ideology and suggests that global identity and allegiance will use the law to establish these ideals. It argues that the principal tool will be extensions via the legal device of human rights--an individual's human right to globalization. This Essay also argues that national allegiance and globalization cannot stand together. Today, national allegiance is an anachronism and simply wrong. In the past, it was, in many cases, considered a virtue and resulted often in the highest individual self-sacrifice for the common good. 1. We studied the demographic viability of populations of a long-lived iteroparous prairie perennial, Silene regia, in relation to management regimes, population sizes, geographical region (Ohio and Indiana vs. Missouri and Arkansas), degree of isolation and amount of genetic variation. Demographic data were collected from 16 populations for up to 7 years.

2. This species has high survivorship, slow growth, frequent flowering and episodic seedling recruitment. Matrix projection methods were used to summarize population performance with and without recruitment. Median finite rates of increase by population varied from 0.57 to 1.82 and from 0.44 to 0.99, respectively.

Fish and shellfish are a beneficial food source due to their high protein content, low saturated fat content, and low cholesterol content; they possess beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium. Recent studies identified a decreased risk of sudden cardiac death in seafood consumers. Per capita seafood consumption increased 27% from 1975 to 1990, with nearly 95% of the U.S. population consuming some kind of fish or shellfish product each year. But seafood consumption may pose health risks which need to be weighed against benefits. One of potential risks is the toxicity of methylmercury. Mercury …

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) and Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) are both pediatric renal tumors that differ from Wilms' tumor based on their distinctive histopathologic characteristics and clinical behavior. CCSK is a very malignant tumor characterized by a propensity for bone metastases, contrasting the relatively benign course characteristic of the majority of Wilms' tumors. CMN, in contrast, is a tumor of the newborn usually diagnosed within the first three months of life that is generally cured with surgery alone.
