Regional analyses of biogeochemical processes can benefit significantly from observational information on land cover, vegetation structure (e.g., leaf area index), and biophysical properties such as fractional PAR absorption. Few remote sensing efforts have provided a suite of plant attributes needed to link vegetation structure to ecosystem function at high spatial resolution. In arid and semiarid ecosystems (e.g., savannas), high spatial heterogeneity of land cover results in significant functional interaction between dominant vegetation types, requiring new approaches to resolve their structural characteristics for regional-scale biogeochemical research. We compared the early life history of black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) in Richmond (an impoundment) and Brant (a natural lake) lakes during 1994-1996. We expected variable recruitment (i.e., missing year classes) in the natural lake and more consistent recruitment in the impoundment. Larval black crappie abundance was always higher in Richmond Lake than Brant Lake. Peak abundance of larval black crappie was highest during 1994 in both waters. However, peak larval abundance did not correspond with fall trap-net catch per unit effort (CPUE) of age-0 black crappie, which was highest during 1995. Thus, recruitment of black crappie was …

Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) in the South Shetland Islands are recovering from 19th-century exploitation more slowly than the main population at South Georgia. To document demographic changes associated with the recovery in the South Shetlands, we monitored fur seal abundance and reproduction in the vicinity of Elephant Island during austral summers from 1986/1987 through 1994/1995. Total births, mean and variance of birth dates, and average daily mortality rates were estimated from daily live pup counts at North Cove (NC) and North Annex (NA) colonies on Seal Island. Effects Of Extruded Corn Or Grain Sorghum On Intake, Digestibility, Weight Gain, And Carcasses Of Finishing Steers, R. J. Gaebe, D. W. Sanson, Ivan G. Rush, M. L. Riley, D. L. Hixon, S. I. Paisley

We conducted two trials to evaluate the effects of extruding vs dry-rolling either corn or grain sorghum on intake, digestibility, and performance of finishing steers. In Trial 1, 92 crossbred steers (average BW 413 kg) were used in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Diets contained either dry-rolled corn (RC), extruded corn (EC), dry-rolled grain sorghum (RGS), or extruded grain sorghum (EGS). Diets were fed for 110 d and contained 78.6% of the respective grain, 9% alfalfa pellets, 8.2% molasses, and 4.2% protein-mineral supplement. Daily gain was highest (P < .049) for steers fed RC, and the ADG of steers fed RGS was higher than that of steers fed extruded diets; there was no difference in ADG between steers fed EC and those fed EGS. Nebraska's Forest Resource

Forests cover 947,000 acres in Nebraska. Other land with scattered tree cover, including narrow wooded strips along streams, windbreaks, and wooded pasture lands, occupy an additional 1,252,000 acres. Managing Nebraska's forest lands can produce significant benefits without negative impacts; however, careless activities in woodlands can damage water resources, soils, wildlife habitat, aesthetic values, and even the ability to produce future benefits.

The conservation of imperiled wildlife species, a fundamental objective of the Endangered Species Act ("ESA"), conflicts, at times, with the United States' responsibilities to promote American Indian rights to govern and develop reservation lands and resources. Critical habitat designation in Indian Country poses a near irreconcilable conflict. Designation effectively "zones" areas within Indian Country for the benefit of a single listed species in accordance with federal -- not tribal -- prerogatives. As such, designation is a direct affront to tribal sovereignty. Designation can severely restrict a tribe's ability not only to govern, but also to conserve and utilize its land, …

Problem-specific knowledge is often implemented in search algorithms using heuristics to determine which search paths are to be explored at any given instant. As in other search methods, utilizing this knowledge will more quickly lead a genetic algorithm (GA) towards better results. In many problems, crucial knowledge is not found in individual components, but in the interrelations between those components. For such problems, we develop an interrelation (linkage) based crossover operator that has the advantage of liberating GAs from the constraints imposed by the fixed representations generally chosen for problems. Theses and Graduate Projects

The following thesis examines the historical perspective of mental illness, leading to therapeutic interventions for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. The need for improved interventions are reflected in treatment failure with both historical and traditional therapies, including repeated hospitalizations, self- injurious behaviors and suicide attempts. This thesis uses the Systems Theory and Ecological Perspective to review and analyze past and present treatments, with special emphasis on the 'Dialectic Behavior Therapy,' (DBT) program initiated in 1993 exclusively for individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

In this Madison Lecture, Chief Judge Posner advocates a pragmatic approach to constitutional decisionmaking, criticizing constitutional theorists who conceal their normative goals in vague and unworkable principles of interpretation. After discussing specific constitutional theories as well as the legal academy's increasing reliance on theory in genera Posner demonstrates the ineffectuality of constitutional theory, using the Supreme Court's decisions in United States v. Virginia and Romer v. Evans as examples. He argues not that these cases were necessarily wrongly decided, but that the opinions lack the empirical support that is crucial to sound constitutional adjudication. Posner urges law professors to focus …
