This paper is the result of three weeks of fieldwork studying a traditional healer in the Volta Region,Ghana. It provides a short biography on the Priest Husunivi Avuworda and an explanation of the system of gods and deities among the Ewes.It explains the process and results of divination through the afa oracle. Through studying the beliefs about the causes of mental illnesses, as well as the methods of treatment, this paper provides insight to the importance of spirituality in traditional healing. Formulations of the essential commitment of the etiological theory of functions have varied significantly, with some individual authors' formulations even varying from one place to another. The logical geography of these various formulations is different from what is standardly assumed; for they are not stylistic variants of the same essential commitment, but stylistic variants of two non-equivalent versions of the etiological theory. I distinguish these strong and weak versions of the etiological theory (which differ with respect to the role of selection in their definitions of function), draw out their respective implications, and argue that the weak version is to …

Members of a panel of stress-responsive biosensors have been used to study the effect of megahertz frequency ultrasound onEscherichia coli. Insonification causes acoustic cavitation, the collapse of oscillating microbubbles in solution, which can damage bacterial cells. A focused 1-MHz ultrasound transducer, capable of generating a spatial peak pulse average intensity of 500 W/cm2, was used to treat liquid bacterial cultures. Stress-responsive promoters fused to luxCDABE allowed the continuous measurement of light produced as a result of protein damage, DNA damage, oxidative stress, and membrane perturbation. A promoter responsive to ammonia limitation was not transcriptionally activated under test conditions. In contrast …

Cabining Freedom: A Comparative Study Of Lesbian And Gay Rights In The United States And Canada, Credence Fogo

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the divergent approaches of Canada and the United States in addressing gay and lesbian equality, highlighting how their differing legal frameworks and cultural values shape the protection of rights. While Canada, under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its Section 1 balancing test, has expanded relationship rights for sexual minorities, the U.S. has taken a more fragmented approach, emphasizing individual liberties over social rights. The analysis underscores the tension between Canada's communitarianism and the U.S.'s individualistic legal culture in advancing LGBTQ+ rights.

Center for Policy Research

One criticism of the estate tax is that it prevents the owners of family businesses from passing their enterprises onto their children. The problem is that it may be difficult to pay estate taxes without liquidating the business. A natural question is why individuals with such concerns do not purchase enough life insurance to meet their estate tax liabilities. This paper examines whether and how people use life insurance to deal with the estate tax. We find that, other things being the same, business owners purchase more life insurance than other individuals. However, on the margin, their insurance purchases are …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

The production and subsequent autoionization of the Ar⁺ (¹D₂)6d¹ satellite state that is formed either by shake-up or recapture during the Auger decay of a 2p vacancy in Ar has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy in the energy region from 243 to 256 eV. The creation of near zero energy electrons below and immediately above the Ar 2p ionization threshold is discussed. Some ambiguous points in previous studies are clarified.
