A Cross-Sectional Study Examining Lifestyle And Rheumatoid Arthritis, Leslie Nazaroff

Objective. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the synovial joints. RA affects 0.5-2% of the population. Though it is predominantly a progressive disease, adjunct therapy may slow the destructive pathway or alleviate affiliated symptoms. This study examined the effects of lifestyle (diet and exercise) and self-efficacy on symptoms of RA as measured by disease activity and health satisfaction.

Methods. Seventy-five RA patients (77% female) from the Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Offices, Rheumatology Department completed self-assessment surveys on their lifestyle practices and RA affliction. Disease symptoms and activity were assessed with the Arthritis Impact Measurement …

Position Effect Takes Precedence Over Target Sequence In Determination Of Adenine Methylation Patterns In The Nuclear Genome Of A Eukaryote, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Kathleen M. Karrer, Teresa A. Van Nuland

Approximately 0.8% of the adenine residues in the macronuclear DNA of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila are modified to N⁶-methyladenine. DNA methylation is site specific and the pattern of methylation is constant between clonal cell lines. In vivo, modification of adenine residues appears to occur exclusively in the sequence 5′-NAT-3′, but no consensus sequence for modified sites has been found. In this study, DNA fragments containing a site that is uniformly methylated on the 50 copies of the macronuclear chromosome were cloned into the extrachromosomal rDNA. The VP16 protein of herpes simplex virus is a potent transcriptional activator of the viral immediate early genes. The transcriptional activation region of VP16 can be divided into two functional subregions, here designated VP16N (comprising amino acids 413-456) and VP16C (amino acids 450-490). Assays of VP16C mutants resulting from both random and alanine-scanning mutagenesis indicated that the sidechains of three phenylalanines (at positions 473, 475 and 479) and one acidic residue (glutamate 476) are important for transcriptional activation. Aromatic and bulky hydrophobic amino acids were effective substitutes for each of the three Phe residues, whereas replacement with smaller or polar …

Increased Photosynthesis Offsets Costs Of Allocation To Sapwood In An Arid Environment, Eileen V. Carey, Ragan M. Callaway, Evan H. Delucia

We assessed the effect that varying patterns of biomass allocation had on growth of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) growing in the desert climate of the Great Basin and the montane climate of the eastern Sierra Nevada. Prior work established that desert trees have lower leaf:sapwood area ratios than montane trees (0.104 and 0.201 m²/cm², respectively) and proportionally greater stem respiration. Sapwood:leaf mass ratios are also greater and increase more as a function stem diameter in desert than in montane trees. We hypothesized that this increased allocation of carbon to stem sapwood and stem respiration …

Beneficial Arthropods Associated With Buffalograss, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Frederick P. Baxendale, Terrance P. Riordan

Beneficial arthropods collected from buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann, evaluation plots and vegetatively established buffalograss lawns included predatory ants, spiders, ground beetles, rove beetles, big-eyed.bugs, and several species of hymenopterous parasitoids. Ants and spiders were the most abundant beneficial arthropods collected, representing 84% of the total beneficial arthropods captured. Pitfall traps collected >2.5 times as many (16,094) beneficial arthropods as sod plug samples (6,054), demonstrating that pitfall traps are a more effective technique than sod plugs for capturing highly mobile surface-dwelling arthropods. Families of parasitoids captured on sticky traps during the 2-yr sampling period included Scelionidae, Encyrtidae, Mymaridae, and Trichogrammatidae. …

1. NC-205 is a regional research committee supported by Land Grant Universities, USDA-CSREES and ARS. It is comprised of scientists from 20 states, Mexico and Canada who have conducted research on stalk-boring pests since 1954.

2. The Committee re-examined many of the assumptions upon which our previous scientific assessments were based. This update http://ent.agri.umn.edu/ecb/nc205doc.htm summarizes our scientific understanding and recommendations for resistance management of Bt corn. Our initial recommendations were published in North Central Regional Publication 602 during 1997. Despite productive viral gene expression in the peripheral nervous system during acute infection, the bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) infection cycle is blocked in sensory ganglionic neurons and consequently latency is established. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA. LR gene products inhibit S-phase entry, and binding of the LR protein (LRP) to cyclin A was hypothesized to block cell cycle progression. This study demonstrates LRP is a nuclear protein which is expressed in neurons of latently infected cattle. Depression In Mexican American Adolescence And Its Relations To Ethnic Identity And Self Esteem, Deborah Cohen Woloski

This study investigated incidence of depressive symptomatology, clinical depression, and suicidal ideation in a high school sample of 1751 Mexican-American adolescents. The relations of depression, as measured by the Diagnostic Scale for Depression-26 (DSD26), self-esteem, as measured by the abbreviated Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and ethnic identity, as measured by the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) were analyzed. Results indicate that Mexican-American adolescents are at increased risk for depressive symptomatology and suicidal ideation. Results showed that there is no higher incidence of Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in Mexican-American adolescents but an increased risk for depressive symptomatology was found. A number of agencies sample Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash on a routine basis at several locations. In order to share and properly interpret the data, the Bureau of Reclamation, Southern Nevada Water Authority and the three Wastewater Treatment Facilities (City of Las Vegas, Clark County Sanitation District and City of Henderson) formed a committee to examine sampling and analytical protocols and to share information with the goal of maximizing the data quality.
