A Lattice Model For Computing The Transmissivity Of The Cornea And Sclera, David B. Ameen, Marilyn F. Bishop, Tom Mcmullen

Physics Publications

Abstract

The method of photonic band structure is used to calculate the frequencies of light that propagate in lattice models of the cornea and sclera of the mammalian eye, providing an explanation for transparency in the cornea that first properly accounts for multiple scattering of light. Each eye tissue is modeled as an ordered array of collagen rods, and photonic band structure methods are used to solve Maxwell's equations exactly for these models, a procedure that automatically effectively includes all orders of multiple scattering. These calculations show that the dispersion relation for the cornea is linear in the visible range, …

The Learning Spiral: Taking The Lead From How Young Children Learn, Martha Taylor Dever Jan 1998

The Learning Spiral: Taking The Lead From How Young Children Learn, Martha Taylor Dever

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The questions at right, asked by 2nd-graders, launch a scientific inquiry about owls. As the 7-year-olds investigate stuffed owl specimens, they express their need to know. Some children continue to stroke the owls' feathers, touch a sharp claw, and ask questions about the mouth, while others immediately turn to printed materials to clarify their questions. This new experience with owls ignites the children's sense of wonder, and the intrinsically motivated scientific inquiry begins.

Shifting Paradigms In Island Biology, Sherwin Carlquist Jan 1998

Shifting Paradigms In Island Biology, Sherwin Carlquist

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The ease of travel by jet aircraft has opened up island areas not only for study but also for introduction of weeds, pests, and pathogens. We are at a critical juncture in the study of island organisms, which have become more accessible at the same time that they are vanishing. With the urgency for study of island organisms, we have many new tools, especially molecular ones, which have validated the existence of long-distance dispersal in unexpected ways. These tools, together with the ease of staying for longer periods on islands, have permitted us to understand many aspects of evolutionary adaptation …

A Minmax Principle, Index Of The Critical Point, And Existence Of Sign Changing Solutions To Elliptic Boundary Value Problems, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this article we apply the minmax principle we developed in [6] to obtain sign-changing solutions for superlinear and asymptotically linear Dirichlet problems.

We prove that, when isolated, the local degree of any solution given by this minmax principle is +1. By combining the results of [6] with the degree-theoretic results of Castro and Cossio in [5], in the case where the nonlinearity is asymptotically linear, we provide sufficient conditions for:

i) the existence of at least four solutions (one of which changes sign exactly once),

ii) the existence of at least five solutions (two of which change sign), and …

Magnetostratigraphy Of Cueva Del Aleman, Isla De Mona, Puerto Rico And The Species Duration Of Audobon's Shearwater, Bruce C. Panuska, John M. Mylroie, Darrell Armentrout, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Magnetostratigraphic analysis of deposits exposed in Cueva del Aleman shows two reversed and two normal chronozones. The lower normal polarity event is observed in a clastic dike and probably predates initial cave formation. Sediments deposited inside the cave proper show a R-N-R sequence and probably date to at least 1.8 Ma. A fossiliferous clastic dike contains normal polarity with an overlying reversed magnetozone. Audubon’s Shearwater (bird) bones occur in the dike, which is tentatively correlated with the lower N polarity zone predating cave formation. If this correlation is correct, the Audubon’s Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri) range can be extended back to …

Mormons, Scripture, And The Ancient World: Studies In Honor Of John L. Sorenson, Davis Bitton

Maxwell Institute Publications

This multidisciplinary volume of essays was written by colleagues and former students of John L. Sorenson as a tribute to his lifetime of contributions to our understanding of Book of Mormon and anthropological scholarship.

The contributing authors present their original research findings on such diverse topics as nineteenth-century Mormon funeral sermons, the question of Nephite kingship, the Isaiah commentaries in the Book of Mormon, early Mormon publishing efforts in the Pacific Mission, and evidences of transoceanic diffusion in pre-Columbian times.

Optimal Contention-Free Unicast-Based Multicasting In Switch-Based Networks Of Workstations, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Dominic Mazzoni '99, Ranjith Rajagopalan '99 Jan 1998

Optimal Contention-Free Unicast-Based Multicasting In Switch-Based Networks Of Workstations, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Dominic Mazzoni '99, Ranjith Rajagopalan '99

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A unicast-based multicasting algorithm is presented for arbitrary interconnection networks arising in switch-based networks of workstations. The algorithm is optimal with respect tot he number of startups incurred and is provably free from depth contention. Specifically, no two constituent unicasts for the same multicast contend for a common channel, even if some unicasts are delayed due to unpredictable variations in latencies. The algorithm uses an underlying partially adaptive deadlock-free unicast routing algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the algorithm behaves as predicted by its theoretical properties and provides a promising approach to unicast-based multicasting.

Kant's Reply To Hume In The Second Analogy, Gorden Steinhoff Jan 1998

Kant's Reply To Hume In The Second Analogy, Gorden Steinhoff

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In the Second Analogy, Kant argues that we must presuppose, a priori, that each event is determined to occur by some preceding event in accordance with a causal law. Although there have been numerous interpretations of this argument, we have not been able to show that it is valid. In this paper, I develop my own interpretation of this argument. I borrow an insight offered by Robert Paul Wolff. In Kant's argument, our need to presuppose that the causal determination of each event rests not upon our need to impose a 'necessary' and 'irreversible' temporal order upon representations of the …

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 250 ha catchment located three km north-west of Dinninup, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 620 mm annual rainfall and 1500 mm annual evaporation. The catchment is characterised by slopes with gradients in excess of 5%, deep weathering (15-25 m to bedrock), active seepage in the valley (piezometric heads 204 m above ground surface) and high recharge (water table fluctuations of 1-4 m).

The Economic Consequences Of The Klassical Caricature, Robert Leeson Jan 1998

The Economic Consequences Of The Klassical Caricature, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

This essay is part of a wider investigation into the macroeconomic creation myth; and this introductory section provides only a very brief summary of Pigou's work. The reader's indulgence is therefore requested: full justification for my assertions will be provided in a forthcoming book. Limitations of space prohibit me from doing justice to my thesis about Pigou at the same time as addressing my allocated topic.
