Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Of Surfactants And Phospholipids Monolayers At Liquid-Liquid Interfaces, B. L. Smiley, R. A. Walker, D. E. Gragson, T. E. Hannon, G. L. Richmond

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Work from our laboratory on vibrational sum frequency spectroscopic investigations of molecular ordering at the carbon tetrachloride-water interface is reviewed. Simple charged surfactants adsorbed at the liquid-liquid interface are seen to induce alignment of interfacial water molecules to a degree which is dependent on the induced surface potential. Saturation of water molecule alignment occurs at a surfactant surface concentration corresponding to a calculated surface potential of approximately 160 mV. In complementary studies, the relative degree of hydrocarbon chain ordering within monolayers of symmetric phosphatidylcholines of different chain lengths is inferred by the relative signal contributions of the methyl and methylene …

Interactions Of Topological Kinks In Two Coupled Rings Of Nonlinear Oscillators, A E. Duwel, C P. Heij, J C. Weisenfeld, Stephen M.K. Yeung, E Trias, S. J.K. Vardy, H. S.J. Van Der Zant, S H. Strogatz, T P. Orlando

Mathematics

Two discrete rings of nonlinear oscillators with topologically trapped kinks exhibit features due to coupling interactions between the rings. These interaction effects include phase locking between kinks in different rings, precession of the kink/antikink collision region, excitation of kink/antikink pairs, and time-dependent switching. We study these phenomena in simulations of two coupled discrete sine-Gordon equations, and in experiments on two inductively coupled rings of niobium Josephson junctions.

Invasive Plants: Changing The Landscape Of America, Federal Interagency Committee For The Management Of Noxious And Exotic Weeds, Randy G. Westbrooks Jan 1998

Invasive Plants: Changing The Landscape Of America, Federal Interagency Committee For The Management Of Noxious And Exotic Weeds, Randy G. Westbrooks

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In the 1950s, the American public became aware that certain chemicals endanger human health and the environment. In response to this threat, new rules and regulations regarding chemical manufacture, use, and disposal were developed under state and federal law. Today, the public has a much better understanding of the chemical pollution problem and generally supports management efforts. The 1990s have brought us face to face with another serious environmental threat: The invasion of the American landscape by aggressive nonnative plants. While farmers have always fought a battle with weeds in crops, invasion of these and other formerly weed-free lands has …

Secondary Electron Emission And Spacecraft Charging, Neal Nickles, John R. Dennison Jan 1998

Secondary Electron Emission And Spacecraft Charging, Neal Nickles, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Spacecraft charging due to the natural plasma environment found in all orbits is known to produce many of the observed spacecraft anomalies and failures. A primary factor in adverse spacecraft charging is the secondary electron emission of differing materials on the spacecraft. Precipitating electrons and ions from the plasma to spacecraft surfaces can result in varying amounts of charge being released, depending on the secondary electron yield of the materials; this can lead to arcing between surfaces. NASA's Space and Environments Effects (SEE) program has recognized the need to improve their current materials database for modeling spacecraft charging and have …

Exo- And Endo-Tricarbonyl[(4b,5,6,7,8,8a-Η)-Cis-N-Methyl-2,3,4,4a,9,9a-Hexahydro-1h- Carbazole]Chromium(0), Nigam Rath, F. Pigge, Shiyue Fang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Acid-mediated hydride reduction of tricarbonyl([eta]6-N-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole)chromium(0) affords either the cis-fused exo-hexahydrocarbazole chromium(0) complex {[Cr(C13H17N)(CO)3], (I)} exclusively, or a separable mixture of (I) and the endo-isomer {[Cr(C13H17N)(CO)3], (II)}, depending upon the choice of hydride donor. The conformations of the hexahydrocarbazole systems differ in the orientation of the indoline moiety with respect to the saturated hexahydrocarbazole rings. The isolation of the exo isomer is unusual, as this complex arises via reaction at the sterically more hindered endo face of the coordinated ligand.

Gradient Drift Instability Growth Rates From Global-Scale Modeling Of The Polar Ionosphere, Jan Josef Sojka, M. V. Subramanium, L. Zhu, Robert W. Schunk Jan 1998

Gradient Drift Instability Growth Rates From Global-Scale Modeling Of The Polar Ionosphere, Jan Josef Sojka, M. V. Subramanium, L. Zhu, Robert W. Schunk

All Physics Faculty Publications

The winter polar ionosphere, under southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions, experiences irregularity development leading to consequences such as scintillation on transionospheric communication links. These irregularities are associated with antisunward convecting polar ionospheric patches. The gradient drift instability (GDI) has been considered a primary candidate for the generation of these irregularities, or at least the long-wavelength energy source of the irregularity-wave cascade process. The Utah State University time-dependent ionospheric model (TDIM) enables the polar cap ionosphere and its patches to be modeled on a large scale in a time-evolving manner. Hence, at each point in space and time, the TDIM …

Mud Creek Urban Nonpoint Source Demonstration, Paul Vendrell, K. Teague Jan 1998

Mud Creek Urban Nonpoint Source Demonstration, Paul Vendrell, K. Teague

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Northwest Arkansas is the seventh fastest developing area in the nation. The conversion of rolling pastureland into paved city streets, parking lots, and buildings within this rapidly urbanizing region is reducing infiltration and intensifying stormwater runoff. In the city of Fayetteville alone, the population increased from 42,099 to 58,163 between 1990 and 1999, moving the city across the population threshold which will require the Phase II Stormwater Permit process. Approximately half of Fayetteville is included in the Illinois River Watershed, which has been identified as the third highest priority watershed in need of restoration in the state of Arkansas. Mud …

A Compact Rotating-Mirror Autocorrelator Design For Femtosecond And Picosecond Laserpulses, D. Mark Riffe, A. J. Sabbah

All Physics Faculty Publications

An interferometric rapid-scanning autocorrelator employing two antiparallel rotating mirrors in a variable arm is optimized for maximum optical path difference as a function of the separation of the two rotating mirrors. A very compact design (mirror separation≈mirror diameter) is possible without a reduction in the maximum pulse width that can be measured.

Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, John R. Dennison Jan 1998

Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Secondary electron emission (SEE) plays a key role in spacecraft charging [Garrett, 1981; Frooninckx and Sojka, 1992] . As a result, spacecraft charging codes require knowledge of the SEE characteristics of various materials in order to predict vehicle potentials in various orbital environments [Katz, et. al., 1986]. Because SEE is a surface phenomenon, occurring in the first few atomic layers of a material, the SEE characteristics of a given surface are extremely sensitive to changes in surface condition—e.g., the addition or removal of surface contaminants, or changes in surface morphology. That spacecraft surfaces can and generally do undergo significant evolution …
