Improving Stream Bioassessment Methods For The Montana Valleys And Foothill Prairies Ecoregion, Wease Bollman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

To assist in the characterization of the ecological integrity of streams of the Montana Valleys and Foothill Prairies, I investigated the distribution of aquatic macro invertebrate assemblages over that geographically variable ecoregion. DECORANA (DCA) ordination and TWINSPAN classification techniques indicated that elevation was the variable with the greatest influence on distributions of benthic taxa in the region, and that three assemblage groups are distinguishable. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (Montana DEQ) uses an adaptation of U.S. EPA’s Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (Plafkin et al. 1989) to evaluate and monitor streams here, and the elements of the protocol were examined for …

Adding Zest To Opac Instruction: Humor And The Unexpected, Bonnie Petry

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

This article evolved from " Getting Students to NOTIS, "

a presentation that the author gave at the 1995 Chicago NOTIS Users

Group Meeting (NUGM) conference. Humor is a desirable element of

all types of instruction, particularly bibliographic instruction. A good

method for injecting some humor into bibliographic instruction is

introducing whimsical catalog entries. The author identifies five types

of bibIiographic records useful for this approach, provides strategies for

locating them, and suggests ways to incorporate them into a class.

Hazardous Waste Determination And Government Enforcement Actions In The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act And The Law No. 24051: Comparison Between The United States And Argentina, Eduardo Jose Conghos

LLM Theses and Essays

The incremental generation and disposal of hazardous waste, causing severe environmental pollution, has become one the world’s most important ecological problems starting with the Stockholm Conference in 1972. This paper examines two legislative reactions to pollution caused by hazardous wastes in the United States, under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act 1976 (RCRA), and Argentina, in Law No. 24051. This paper makes a comparative analysis of the material provisions of both the RCRA and the Law with emphasis on the tools and actions provided for the enforcement of the RCRA and the Law. The paper concludes that the RCRA and …

Interaction Between National Environmental Marketing Regulations And International Trade, Pirkko-Liis Harkmaa Jan 1998

Interaction Between National Environmental Marketing Regulations And International Trade, Pirkko-Liis Harkmaa

LLM Theses and Essays

The environmental marketing of goods and products have a substantial influence on the demand and supply. This thesis reviews the scope, advantages and disadvantages of diverse types of environmental marketing and further addresses the need for international regulations on eco-labeling programs. This thesis finds that there is a substantial connection between trade and environmental marketing which has resulted in the need for an international harmonization of eco-labeling strategies including the General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The thesis concludes with propositions for a uniform international standard on eco-labeling for the adoption of environmentally-sound best practices and the mitigation of …

Labelling Genetically Modified Products Under International Law, Mary Caroline Harris

LLM Theses and Essays

This paper focuses on the debate on the health, policy and legal regimes that require the special labeling of food, drugs and other products that contain genetically-modified-organisms. The paper examines national and international regulatory schemes on genetically-modified-organisms and the roles of the General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and World Trade Organization (WTO) conventions for non-restrictive global trade. This paper analyzes the scope, aims and objectives of the proposed international Biosafety Protocol in line with the overarching goals of GATT/WTO. The paper concludes that the food industry and individual producers should have the liberty to decide whether to label …

Domestic Subsidies Under The Wto Agreement On Subsidies And Countervailing Measures And Their Treatment In Section 771 Of The Tariff Act Of 1930, Cecil Carl-Erich Kramer Jan 1998

Domestic Subsidies Under The Wto Agreement On Subsidies And Countervailing Measures And Their Treatment In Section 771 Of The Tariff Act Of 1930, Cecil Carl-Erich Kramer

LLM Theses and Essays

Governments provide subsidies for a variety of reasons and they are an important tool "to promote important objectives of national policy. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is comprised of industrialized countries, all of which are Members of the OECD Convention also have shown a steady rise in the provision of subsidies. The policy behind the fact that subsidies are addressed in international agreements is that they create a distortion in international trade and that they can quickly and destructively spread from nation to nation. They create a disparity between the actual costs incurred in producing a particular …

Exclusion Mapping Of Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Third Locus, Eoin Thompson Jan 1998

Exclusion Mapping Of Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Third Locus, Eoin Thompson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of this research was to perform exclusion on a rare form of hereditary autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). To-date, two genes for ADPKD have been identified: PKDI which has been localized to the short arm of chromosome 16 and PKD2 which has been localized to the long arm of chromosome 4. However, a small number of families have been reported that have not shown linkage to either of these two loci, thus suggesting the existence of at least one additional locus (PKD3). Two families that are affected with ADPKD and do not show linkage to PKDI or …

An Art Therapy Programme Incorporating Buddhist Concepts To Address Issues Of Aggression In Adult Male Prisoners, Diane Randall Jan 1998

An Art Therapy Programme Incorporating Buddhist Concepts To Address Issues Of Aggression In Adult Male Prisoners, Diane Randall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis has researched and designed a programme that offers an alternative way of working with aggression in a male prison population, using an art therapy approach that incorporates Buddhist concepts as an intervention. Buddhist practices have traditionally been used in Eastern cultures to calm the mind and to develop compassion as an antidote to aggression. Therefore these practices have seen used as a basis for the design of exercises in the programme. The purpose of the programme is to offer an intervention that will complement, support, or be an alternative to existing treatments, which are primarily cognitive-behavioural in orientation. …

Politics, Doctrinal Coherence, And The Art Of Treatise Writing, Edward Rubin Jan 1998

Politics, Doctrinal Coherence, And The Art Of Treatise Writing, Edward Rubin

Seattle University Law Review

Writing a treatise on constitutional law is both necessary and impossible. It is necessary because constitutional law, at least in the United States, is a common law subject. To be sure, it possesses a positive law basis, but that basis is very thin and the decisional law that has flowed from it is luxuriant and complex. Treatises organize and summarize bodies of decisional law, creating a coherent structure from the welter of incremental decisions, overlapping doctrines, and particularized holdings and dicta. Yet it is impossible to write a treatise about constitutional law. All treatises depend, for their effectiveness, upon a …

An Alternative And Discretionary § 1367 (Symposium: A Reappraisal Of The Supplemental Jurisdiction Statute, Title 28 U.S.C. 1367), Edward H. Cooper Jan 1998

An Alternative And Discretionary § 1367 (Symposium: A Reappraisal Of The Supplemental Jurisdiction Statute, Title 28 U.S.C. 1367), Edward H. Cooper

Articles

Supplemental jurisdiction is a concept too complex to be captured by complicated statutory drafting. That is my proposition. Or, somewhat more accurately, that is my tentative proposition, advanced for consideration alongside the elegant but intricate statutory proposals emerging from the American Law Institute's Federal Judicial Code Revision Project. Professor John Oakley, the Reporter, knows more about supplemental jurisdiction, and has thought more deeply about it, than anyone. He has traveled many roads in continually refining proposed revisions of 28 U.S.C. § 1367. If anyone can capture all the nuances of supplemental jurisdiction in a statute, it is he, assisted by …
